Gion Kobu is home to some little known treasures. The allure of a world that draws in the observer with cute and flamboyantly dressed up Maiko while the rarest gems, the natori Geiko, stay hidden in the shadows. Sometimes the outsider gets extremely lucky and witnesses a performance by one of the great dowagers of Kyoto and for a brief moment is allowed into a truly exclusive circle.
Seeing Nakako dance is one of those rare opportunities to enjoy the highest grade of entertainment Gion Kobu has to offer. She is one of the most senior Geiko of the district and has lived through much of its rich history. Originally from Sawamura, she was the imouto of legendary Kumiko, the head of a line of talented Geimaiko of Nishimura. When Nakako became independent, she changed her affiliation to Geiko only okiya Mikami since Sawamura closed its doors. Her connections run deep in the karyukai as she has ties to quite a few okiya and is friends with many important members of Gion Kobu.
Tama-sama for example, chose Nakako as Wakana´s oneesan instead of one of the resident Geiko of Tama. It is said that Nakako´s personality fit Wakana´s best and the Maiko would profit immensely from her mentor as she became very popular but retired just a short time after turning her collar. Tama´s Geiko tend to retire young to get married as their Geimaiko get the best connections imaginable. Nakako´s high prestige fits into this luxurious picture but she dedicated herself to the karyukai. A glossy varnish of elegant artistry, held up by decades of hard work and commitment.
