I gave these Perspective lectures at Fullerton College in 1994. No fancy animations, just me in front of a chalkboard, but the train of thought almost makes Perspective easy. They are $1 per lecture. Spend boldly and tell the world so that I can do more and better for you.

These lectures may be 20 years old, but Marshall Vandruff - whom you might have seen on one of Proko´s videos as well - is an exceptional teacher and instructor. I´ve only seen the first couple of these videos, and I´m loving these lectures so far! Almost feels like I'm part of the class, and the knowledge you gain is simply priceless and invaluable.
So, if you are looking for a way to tackle perspective or if you know someone who struggles with this, spread it around and give this a shot. It's a bargain you shouldn't miss. :o)
More basic rendering practice. Started this one yesterday, and finished it today. Spent too long on things that still don't feel natural to me, so I waste time going over parts again and again until I feels sort of right.
But it was really great practice for freehand lines, blending, brush-getting-used-to, taking into consideration where the light source comes from, how it affects the different surfaces, as well as using temp layers.
I really like this plane/render relationship, as I think the more you get used to how light affects different forms (which are essentially planes), the better you memorize these relationships and bring that knowledge out whenever necessary. It would be a really great idea to break down objects/subjects before you go on with a study, especially with still life subject matter, so I'll make sure to try that out next time and see how it goes.
I´ve fallen a bit behind with my master studies again due to lack of time at the moment, but I squeezed in some basic ctrl+paint exercises, so I can practice blending a bit. Not sure how well they ended up, but maybe I´ll re-do the apple blending in 6 months from now so I can evaluate the extent of progress between the two worksheets, or redo a previous study.
If all goes as planned though, I'll have done a lot more, so hopefully I'll be tackling blending better by then - among other things. Just need to find time to do more studies on a daily basis, as I feel like whatever progress I might be making right now goes all to waste when days without any studies come up in between. In a month or so, I'll be a bit more guilt-free in terms of spending time on my fundamentals' plan, so I'll get to it more often.
And.... I'm still debating whether I should join Noah's Art Camp now or when I've completed the basics of my own plan. I've invested in some really great books that I can't wait to dive into, so I was just thinking that in order to get the best out of Art Camp 1 & 2, maybe it's wiser to commit to those after I already have a more solid foundation. It will definitely stress me out less, and I will then focus on building on the important stuff and getting better, instead of struggling with basic issues like edge control and brushwork and perspective and lack of observational studies... and the list goes on. And on.

Anyway, back to this, the first one is the basic plane and the rendered result, and the second is the apple planes and rendered outcome - I took a screenshot of Matt's video, as the worksheet is no longer available under the video description.

Finally... done with #12. I think I gave up about a dozen times until I finished this. Yet it's far from finished - the floor sucks, I am very painfully aware, but I honestly have no more strength to work on this. The walls nearly killed me, and they're still off by a lot at many places.
#12 ended up messed up perspective- and proportion-wise (kitchen counter is off, the figure's head and upper body is bigger a.o) but I'm calling them done regardless.
I need to find a way to approach these a bit more efficiently. On #12 I finally used all brushes with airbrush option turned off, so that helped with not getting the same blurry effect I usually got in the other studies. But in terms of learning about composition from these studies, I think I'd like to try the less "polished" approach. I tend to have this bad habit of not leaving them be, just because they're not done. And yet even when I do decide to wrap things up, they're still lacking a lot and have a lot of mistakes. 8 more to go, and then I think I'll do a round of master copies, but using less time, yet still being able to read the composition and extract secrets. :o)

Some rendering practice based on ctrl+paint's worksheet. Not sure what I actually accomplished here, since I have the feeling the light is wrong in so many ways. Also, giving soft corners is something I'll need to figure out how to do. Probably a lot of observational studies will help, and lots of practice. And a pill of patience. And less pressing and squeezing, as that definitely is not the way to go, yet I so often resort to.
And I still need to finish my master study of Gérôme.

Two more studies. Tried to be more careful of my edges and brushwork. Maybe there is some slight improvement in the Shishkin study - still feels like it lacks something. I think I enjoyed this study most so far.

For SpeedpaintStudies 's March challenge "Clouds, rain, weather" - first on-time submission.
Should have checked a few more tutorials before I set out to do this one. But, the problems I face are the same: edges, patience, blending, patience, and working effectively and non-destructively. It will come. But for now I think I'll focus on my fundamentals, and if I set out to do another study like this one, I'll do it in grayscale. Because before you learn to jump, you need to learn to walk. Or something similar. So being in control of my brushes, values and tablet, is my first priority before moving on to color. :o)

Two studies I should have been done with in February, but didn't have to time to get to apart from occasional couple of minutes, followed by frustration and re-adjustments.

Back to practicing for now, and hopefully the next studies will be better in terms of brushwork, since my anatomy needs a lot more work and dedication, which I can't seem to find right now. Values and edges is all I'm after, so need to keep pushing.
Brush control practice, based on Ctrl+paint's lesson on basic rendering. It's good practice to get used to working with a tablet, especially edges.
Just need to keep a few things in mind when doing studies next time. I still have to finish a master study I started almost 2 months ago, but couldn't get to it. And since it's frustrating to see all the mistakes in each study, I thought this could perhaps help a bit with the next ones.
struggling with an injury - story and advice!
Hey everyone! In some previous blog posts, I mentioned that I’m struggling with an injury to my drawing arm. Although I hoped that the problem would have totally gone away after more than a month of rest, it actually hasn’t, and I’m still struggling with it at this very moment. It’s actually been harder emotionally than it has physically. I’ve decided to go ahead and write a blog entry about it, not only to keep my followers in the loop but also as a cautionary tale to any artists out there who have not yet sustained an injury. If I had been more aware of the risks, maybe this would never have happened to me, so the very least I can do is try to help those who aren’t aware of the risks.

Very insightful for those struggling with a health problem. I have personally experienced tendon issues with my wrist (De Quervain´s syndrome or tenosynovitis/tendinosis), and trust me, you don´t want this to become chronic. Even after having an operation, things don´t get back to normal 100%.
By pushing yourself too hard and neglecting your own body and its limitations, you end up damaging yourself along the way. A healthy mental state - staying calm, collected and taking into consideration how much you can actually take, is crucial in order to keep this very thin balance between mind and body.
If something starts hurting, there´s something you need to re-consider in your workflow. Whatever you might be doing for a living - be it design, or art, or office work. Anything.
Hopefully this will prevent some of those health problems for some, or trigger some alarms where things have gotten out of hand already. Stay strong and positive either way, and try to listen to your body sometimes. It usually knows better. :o)
Second batch of Master studies. In an attempt to practice more regularly, improve values and get used to the stylus.
These were supposed to be up to an hour studies, but they all exceeded this time frame. Probably because my approach is a bit too slow and still looking for a way to do things efficiently and faster. I guess that only comes with lots and lots of practice.

First three master studies for the Composition 1.1 assignment on Conceptart.org. Was planning to start with master studies for quite some time, plus needed a reason to practice and get better at using a tablet.
There´s plenty of mistakes, I´m entirely aware of that, and I´ll do my best to fix them. I especially need to get better at anatomy and perspective, but with the time I have available, it might take longer than I would have wished. For now I´ll focus on getting familiarized with using the stylus, and fixing my edges-values.

Latest value studies, with a hint of high and low key. Had a great time with the low key one, but the light tones on the bowl of eggs hit my impatience hard. And I think it´s way darker than it should be. Improvised at some points where no matter how much I squinted, values were too subtle to distinguish. I like how the paperbag turned out though, I think I´ll grab one from Søstrene Grenes next time, just to do a study from life, instead of references.
And I think the next ones I do will be from life. While I really enjoyed practicing seeing the values in all the studies so far, I think it´s time to proceed to the most terrifying thing of all - until it seizes to be so scary. And combine it with some perspective. And drop in occasional values in there, just to keep the eye practicing. Plus, I got so many bottles stacked in here, that unless I finally get those observational studies done, my boyfriend will officially stage an intervention: me, my bottles and my fears. Yaay.

First post for 2014, long overdue. I wanted to be finished with lighting and form by the end of the Jan´s second week, but due to a slight injury and other pressing matters, it all got a major delay.
This one I had started in December, but failed to finish up. So, rusty lighting and value studies, and an attempt to loosely illustrate shadows based on the similar form of those vessels - major fail in many points, as I think I mixed up shadows of two different states: hanging and standing. More practice and definitely doing studies from life will help a lot, and that´s coming, hopefully soon. Have a few more objects/refs with gorgeous values I want to explore until I move on to another topic, most probably perspective, since I´m not really confident in that area.
