My two rats have been sneezing for a week or so now. My partner refuses to take them to the vets because "sneezing is normal" even though he was told to look out for sneezing when we got them. I have recorded that they have both sneezed approximately 12 times each in the past 3 hours. Is this "just sneezing" or should they been seen by a vet?

Sneezing is "normal" to an extent and can be due to a lot of things such as bedding type or the detergent you use for your clothes.

If you have noticed a sudden increase in sneezing though it may be worth checking out. Do they have an increase in red discharge around their noses (porphryn)? If you hold their bellies/chests up to your ear (as if they were a telephone), does their breathing sound crackly at all? Are they more tired/subdued than usual? If so these could be signs of a respiratory infection.

If you definitely think they're sneezing more than usual and there has been no change to their bedding then I would get them checked out. I would also rethink your relationship, I have no sympathy for people who refuse to take their pets to a vet.
