the gang usually forgets about steve’s home life until he says something he thinks is subtle, but it only ends up reminding them that he’s got it pretty rough too. like two-bit left beer cans in his car and was kinda laughing at how mad steve was getting until he said something about how “my house already reeks of this shit, ain’t no reason my car has to, too.” yeah, two stopped laughing real quick. or him and soda will have gotten into some trouble and darry’ll be teasing him, and steve tries to be funny and says something along the lines of “yeah, if my dad found out about this, he’d beat the shit out of me”. he means it in a joking way, but it’s likely it could happen. or that it would happen. both darry and soda are suddenly very insistent that he stays at their place that night.

the gang doesn’t really say anything about it. there’s nothing to say. they always feel that same heaviness of reality settling on them, but it’s a harsh reality that both he and johnny have to endure.
