I haven't been on here to talk about S&B for a hot minute, but bro, Ben Barnes, I'm feeling betrayed by YOU right now. Last season you were kinda playing it cute with Kirigan/Darkling making it sound like you did think he had a point or could be redeemed or SOMETHING. But it generally sounded more positive leaning.
Why are you using all the anti buzzwords now? Gaslighting, toxic, mansplaining. Ben, please. Did someone put a gun to your head and told you to say this? What's happening???
Ok I am in rant mode again, sorry, this blog just happens to be a place where I dump all my thoughts negative and positive both, unfortunately for all who follow me. But I have seen some bad and incorrect takes from anti darkling/darklinas. So here’s just a few things I want to say.
Firstly LB has never stated that she based the darkling on her ab*sive ex. This is misinformation that was spread by antis. The only thing she has ever said about an ab*sive relationship was that she wrote the first book, Shadow and Bone, at a dark time in her life right after she had got out of a bad relationship. She has said in the past that the darkling was inspired by every bad boy she’s had a crush on in fiction including david bowie’s the goblin king.
So it seems from these comments like the character was supposed to emulate those types of characters that woman find attractive, the ones you would fall for.
I’ve also seen the argument that LB clearly wrote the darkling as a villain, well LB might disagree with you there as she herself has said on multiple occasions that she doesn’t write villains:
LB says that the darkling believes he is doing the right thing and that ‘you can make a case for most of the choices he makes, even the despicable ones.’ So if LB says that she doesn’t write villains and that you can make a case for his actions you can’t really blame darkling fans for doing the same.
The truth is LB promoted the heck out of both the darkling and darklina (or as it was known back then Darlina and Alarkling) when she was writing the og trilogy, even admitting to ‘fanning the flames’ when talking about people shipping m*lina and darklina and was clearly encouraging the shipping of both ships:
She also put out teases for the darkling and darklina:
And promoted darklina fan edits even using the ship tags:
It was only post the release of book three that she changed her tune, likely because of all the backlash she got about the ending of the books. So no LB wasn’t always against fans shipping darklina or liking the darkling. All of this information is easily found with a simple google search, I wasn’t even in the fandom back then being a show watcher first and yet I was still able to learn all of this with minimal difficulty.
Which brings me to the whole darklina being an allegory for a older man manipulating a younger girl and how the darklina fans ‘missed this’. Well if they did miss it then it was for a very good reason, but the truth is darklina’s didn’t miss it, we just didn’t think it made sense within the narrative, the darklina fandom have talked about it, myself included, in fact I’ve already posted a whole pretty much essay on the topic. But let me explain why some people may have ‘missed it’ and why it doesn’t work in the story or with darklina as the allegory. The first is because LB chose to use an immortal/immortal couple for this allegory. The thing with immortality in fiction, especially as love interests, is it makes age pretty much meaningless. The whole point of immortals is that they are ageless. Immortal ships have always been accepted within fiction and this whole age gap issue has never come up before. Nobody was going omg but the age gap yuck with Bella and Edward when twilight came out, or when Magnus and Alec got together in Shadowhunters or with any of the ships in Vampire Diaries. Yet now anti’s are trying to use the argument that the darkling is 100s of years older than Alina and that’s creepy all of a sudden. Sorry but not in my book, an immortal is always going to be significantly older than anyone else what’s the alternative they spend eternity alone, never knowing love? At least with darklina they are both immortal. Another reason why it doesn’t work is because of how the darkling is described in the book, he is said to not look much older than Alina, so in the books he looks like a teenager. So of course people weren’t going to pick up on the older guy/younger girl allegory because the darkling isn’t presented in the books as an older guy. He’s described the same way every other immortal being in every YA book at that time was. It’s also worth noting that I am not sure if LB ever actually said that darklina were supposed to represent a older guy with a younger girl or whether that was something the fandom came up with. I’m not saying she didn’t just that I myself have never seen a direct quote from her that I recall and I wasn’t able to find one. I think the first time I heard of it was when someone sent me an ask about the topic. I know that she has said it was meant to serve as a warning of attractive and charismatic men being able to manipulate young girls but I don’t know that she herself has ever talked about an age gap or specifically mentioned older men?
Another thing that I have been seeing alot of are comments like darkling/darklina fans only like him because he is hot. What bothers me about this is firstly even if that were true and the only reason people liked him was because he is hot, so what? There’s nothing wrong with that, its fiction and fiction is used to escape for a bit, its for enjoyment and entertainment, so if that enjoyment and entertainment comes in the form of staring at the hot guy irregardless of whether they are the hero or villain, let them be. Why are you criticising the way someone enjoys fiction? Sometimes a gal just wants to look at the hot guy. Secondly its just a really irrelevant argument because the darkling is not the only hot, charismatic character in the books or show. M*l is also described as being attractive and charismatic with no shortage of friends and girls, Nikolai is another character that fits that description, so by this argument the only reason M*l fans like him is because he is hot, and the only reason Nikolai fans like him is because he is hot. Thirdly its just plainly not true, whilst I am sure there may be some fans who only like him because he is hot, again nothing wrong with that, most fans like him for a variety of different reasons because he is an interesting and complicated character. As someone who spends a fair bit of time in the darkling/darklina tags the most common reason I have seen for fans liking him is because of his dedication to the grisha, his willingness to fight for the grisha something that he has dedicated 100′s of years of his life too. Personally I like Aleksander/the darkling because he has a sympathetic backstory, because he is fighting for the grisha and when seeing that they had no place to go where they could be free from fear he vowed to make them a safe place, a sanctuary, of course I am going to root for that goal too. I like him because he is complicated and complex and despite being an immortal being who has become deeply effected by past traumas there is still something beautifully human about him, particularly in the show. I also like the connection he has with Alina, the whole yin/yang of it and them being each others balance. I love the complexity and angst of them having this deep connection and pull to each other but also having this anger and sense of betrayal, how they have to try and navigate around having different points of view and seeing the world in a different ways, it makes for a very compelling story and their chemistry in the show is electric. The fact that he is hot is merely a bonus, but even if he wasn’t a conventionally attractive person I would still like his character because of those complexities, because of that connection he has with Alina. But one thing this rant has done is make me curious as to what my other fellow darkling/darklina fans like about the darkling? What drew you to the character? Anyway that’s enough ranting for one day, again my apologies, I am going to go and rewatch season 1 of shadow and bone in preparation for season 2′s release tomorrow…sheepishly shuffles off my soapbox, waving awkwardly.
So I finished watching 2nd season of “Shadow & Bone”, and in my mind, it went like this:

Let me carry the hatred of this world. Because of the choices you made. Choices you too will make… in time. I will never walk your path. I know you believe that now. But soon…Soon you will have no equal. The years spent alone will grind you down, they will harden you. And who will be there to shield you from it? Who will be there to save you? I will save myself.
The world doesn’t need a Saint to protect it. It needs a monster. And while I remain… Let me be your monster. You think that after everything, I’d still stand by you? There is no light without darkness. Without me, you have no counter, no balance. Let me carry the hatred of this world. Hatred. Because of the choices you made. Choices you too will make… in time. I will never walk your path. I know you believe that now. But soon… Soon you will have no equal. The years spent alone will grind you down, they will harden you. And who will be there to shield you from it? Who will be there to save you? I will save myself. Your legacy is already written. There is no redemption. Leave her alone! No! You can’t control them, can you? You can’t control any of it.
WHOS DRAWING DARKLINA FAN ART IN KETTERDAM
Hello, Grishaverse. Here's a lil Shadow and Bone cast Q&A to prepare you for season two <3
Was gonna say if Ben isn’t in it I would be so offended, but there he is
i know that in canon the four nations all seem to use the same writing system but i think it would be really funny if all four of them spoke the same language but had vastly different writing systems
the earth kingdom script, being based on chinese characters, would be logographic, with each logogram representing a single-syllable morpheme that can be combined together to form words. in this system, the characters used in each word convey meaning rather than solely denoting pronunciation. this would likely be the oldest script and the one that the spoken language evolved alongside. there would be a lot of quirks and historical and regional variations in the script.
the fire nation script would be a syllabary similar to japanese kana (specifically hiragana). the fire nation takes longer to develop a script; they use earth kingdom characters for a while, but they find that unwieldy, so a syllabary develops based on the sounds and structure of the spoken language. it would probably go through a similar process to the development of kana, where they start with a man’yōgana-like script and then develop that into a proper syllabary—the development likely wouldn’t be completely linear, though, leading to pecularities similar to japanese hentaigana.
the water tribe script would be an abugida (alphasyllabary) similar to qaniujaaqpait/titirausiq nutaaq (the syllabics developed to write inuktitut). they don’t have a writing system for a long time—paper gets wet, and isn’t exactly in high supply in the poles—but as time goes on and the circulation of goods and people between the four nations increases, they develop one. i like to think it would do the really cool thing qaniujaaqpait does where vowels are denoted through the rotation of their associated consonants (explained better here). there would be differences between the northern and southern scripts, but they would be relatively minor.
the air nomad script would be an abugida as well, similar to the tibetan script. it would have distinct diacritical marks to denote each vowel, setting it apart from the water tribe script, and it would have similar stylized modifiers (like the tibetan ༄, which marks the beginning of a text) and no spaces to divide words. the characters themselves would also be relatively stylistic, which would make everything written in the script both incredibly beautiful and wildly difficult for outsiders to read.
all of this is to say: i think sokka should’ve looked at the invitation the earth king sent them and gone, completely deadpan, “i have no idea what the fuck this says.”
This is all very cool and interesting except Fire Nation. Why do people always think Japan when they see Fire Nation instead of South East Asia.
For example, Thai language was a descendant of a language used in South China, so you can still have the "borrowed from Earth Kingdom" lore. Thai culture is after all half the cultural inspiration for Fire Nation (the other half being China)

I had the utter misfortune of seeing this in a random news article. Again it’s with that garbage jumbled Generic Feudal Japan setting. And unlike the bullshit Superman one, this time this person actually wrote a year. 1580s.
Well, I’m glad it at least just referred to the government in the vaguest of terms and not actually try to play with history. I’m already offended by the use of -san honorific, and if they actually try to touch real history I am certain it would be utterly atrocious.
I’m super meh about Shang Chi just because this kind of plot is like... seriously super typical for Asian media in general, but I’m... a bit weirded out by the not!ninjas.
The Ten Rings agents seriously looking like poorly-designed fake ninjas. It’s like the deisgners just vaguely gave them tufted hats and slightly-more-hanfu-ish robes to be able to say “look they’re TOTALLY not ninjas because they have different hats!” And the one guy with a Sichuan/Szechuan opera mask because why the fuck not.
The True Cost of an Alliance
So for anyone who doesn’t know I am unapologetically a fan of the Sengoku Musou/Samurai Warriors series. While It was actually the series Kessen that got me into the Sengoku Period to begin with it was Sengoku Musou that really helped keep me interested in the era. With Samurai Warriors 5 coming this year and the introduction of a rather unexpected character named Sena (whom I will be referring to as Lady Tsukiyama) I thought this would be the perfect time to discuss one of the most infamous incidents of the period. This is a facts tumblr so I’m not going to really touch on them until after the story is done, but I will start by saying that this event has spawned several tales of both ghosts and curses throughout Japanese history. Now that I have your attention let me set the scene for you. It is the year 1579. Oda Nobunaga and his clan have taken over all of central Japan. To the West is the Mori clan, and to the East is the Uesugi. The mighty Takeda clan had been decimated at the battle of Nagashino and the Oda-Tokugawa alliance was taking over more and more Takeda land by the year. While the Takeda’s home province of Kai would not fall for another four years, no one would consider the Takeda clan a viable opponent to the Oda-Tokugawa alliance at this point. Nobunaga’s alliance with Ieyasu, forged after the fall of the Imagawa in 1560 and sealed three years later in 1563 by a marriage of Nobunaga’s five year old daughter Tokuhime to Ieyasu’s five year old son Nobuyasu was considered unparalleled at this point. However, in 1579 Ieyasu would learn the true cost of this alliance. His eldest son Nobuyasu was considered a rising star in Japanese politics. He seemed to have a natural talent for leadership and battle alike and was being perfectly groomed by Ieyasu to be the next head of the Tokugawa clan. He had a loving wife whom he treated well and was said to be quite popular across the Tokugawa and Oda controlled provinces. Ieyasu even put Nobuyasu in charge of his home castle, Okazaki. Nobuyasu was deeply loved by his father and adored by his mother Lady Tsukiyama. So much so, in fact, that his wife Tokuhime apparently had a long standing grudge with her mother in law. While we don’t know the exact reason some speculate that the two butted heads quite a bit over what was best for Nobuyasu, how Tokuhime could be a better wife, and what Tokuhime could and couldn’t do to properly respect her inlaws. One tale states that Tokuhime only gave birth to two daughters for Nobuyasu and failed to produce an heir. Wanting a grandson Lady Tsukiyama arranged for the daughter of a Takeda retainer to become Nobuyasu’s concubine in hopes of the concubine having a son. While this certainly wasn’t unheard of at this time it apparently this didn’t sit well with the 21 year old. I want to take a brief pause to say that some sources also say that Tokuhime and Nobuyasu’s marriage was horrible, Nobuyasu was a mama’s boy, he never took his wife’s side and despised her for arguing with his mother, etc. etc. but we can’t verify any of that and given that Tokuhime didn’t seem to have any direct problem with Nobuyasu himself I’m going to say this was unlikely. Anyway, back to the story of Nobunaga’s angry daughter. Deciding she had enough of her mother in law’s interference into her marriage Tokuhime wrote a letter to her father. For anyone who knows about Nobunaga, I’m sure you’ve realized this can’t go anywhere good. Tokuhime told her father that since the concubine was from the Takeda, clearly Ieasyu’s wife was colluding with the Takeda forces and had been in direct contact with Takeda Katsuyori to undermine the Oda-Tokugawa alliance and possibly even get the Tokugawa to switch sides. Obviously this didn’t sit well with Nobunaga and Nobunaga demanded that in order to keep the Oda-Tokugawa alliance alive Ieyasu would have to execute his wife. Understanding how important the alliance was, being aware that his son had in fact received a Takeda clan daughter as a concubine, and not wanting a war to break out in which he would be pinned between the Oda, Hojo, and Takeda, Ieyasu agreed. On 9 September 1579, Lady Tsukiyama (Sena in Samurai Warriors 5) was beheaded on the shore of Lake Sanaru, in Hamamatsu on Ieyasu’s order. Her primary grave is at Seiryū temple in Hamamatsu. However, her head rests in Hachioji Shrine. Sadly the tragedy doesn’t stop there. Remember the entire point of this was to maintain the Oda-Tokugawa alliance. Nobuyasu now had a reason to despise the Oda and when he became head of the Tokugawa household would likely have no sympathy if the Oda ever found themselves in danger. Knowing that his son would now have a grudge Ieyasu would also order his first born son, the rising star Nobuyasu, to commit seppuku. This meant Tokuhime would live the rest of her days as a widow, returning to the Oda clan and that leadership of the Tokugawa after Ieyasu died would go to Tokugawa Hidetada. ultimately this would prove a good thing as it would mean Hidetada’s son Iemitsu would become Shogun. Though we are left to wonder how history may have changed if Nobuyasu had been allowed to live or if his wife never sent that letter to Nobunaga. Now as I said at the opening this in and of itself isn’t a ghost story. However, for the next 400+ years several tales would arise of seeing the ghosts of Lady Tsukiyama and Matsudaira Nobuyasu. When Nobunaga died a few years later at the hands of his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide some would say it was Lady Tsukiyama’s curse. Some would even go so far as to say that it was actually planned out by the Akechi and Tokugawa together in revenge for the loss of Ieyasu’s son and wife. Even when it came to Ieyasu losing the battle of Komaki and Nagakute it would be labeled as his late wife’s curse. Just like at any point throughout history whenever something bad happened to the Oda or the Tokugawa people would be quick to find a horrible story from the past and claim that it must be a curse from someone involved with that event. Will Sena’s fate be the same in Samurai Warriors 5? I doubt it. Koei tends to leave out particularly gruesome things like this from their titles. However, it will be curious to see what fate they have in store for Ieayasu’s wife and how long she lasts within the game’s world. Though, some of you may recognize this story from Nioh 1 as the wraith of Lady Tsukiyama appears as a demon mourning the death of her son before attacking William.
No, actually the whole story about Nobunaga’s daughter has been debunked as being later-date Tokugawa propaganda. Not wanting Ieyasu to have the tarnish of “ordering his own son to death” they dumped the blame on Nobunaga.
The true cause of the seppuku order was that Ieyasu suspects his own son of plotting to overthrow him. When Nobunaga was asked for second opinion, his only response was “do what you want”, and so Ieyasu ordered his son to seppuku. There was no Tokuhime involved.
A more detailed version of my old drawing of Aleksander as a forest beast/creature.
I miscalculated and the antlers are hellish to draw; who knows when I will ever actually finish the actual drawing this design was intended for.
It’s a Red Riding Hood-based very silly AU because as much as I love all the canon style angst and drama, I also like fun and cute stuff. Darkles is a beast who lurks in the forest that Alina has to pass by every day, and he sometimes steals her food because he’s too shy to talk to her properly.
Halloween/Samhain is just around the corner, so we should definitely have a Darklina Fanfic Month in October. We could do different creepy/supernatural romance themes for them. Although, Aleksander is perfect for being a vampire/werewolf/warlock/Unfeelie faerie, I'd also like to see Alina as a supernatural creature, especially a more unique one (ex. A succubus). I think it would be fun to see all the amazing fanfics, fanart, and manips! 😉🎃
Attention Darklina fan works creators!
What say you?
I once drew Alexander as a made up beast that is combined elements from the Morozova stag and the Sea whip: https://randomlps.tumblr.com/post/652970446681145344/after-seeing-afterblossoms-cute-ducks-i-decided-i
Not the best art because it’s just a quick thing, but I’d love to give it another go when I have time
