I couldn't be happier that the show does not let the audience misunderstand the sheer level of horror and violence that Caleb has in his past and that he is STILL capable of. Liam O'Brien did not act his socks off for 500+ hours portraying Caleb's insane amounts of guilt and ptsd for us to think being a volstrucker was a chill walk in the park. It had to look brutal and visceral and truly scary because it WAS. Of course he kills his cat on screen. Of course it makes us horrified and disgusted and OF COURSE it makes some people question if he even deserves to be redeemed after that. That's the whole point.
