about imperial volume, a science teacher drilled a chart into our heads that was the G for gallon, with four Qs inside it for quarts (cause they're a quater gallon), two Ps inside each Q cause it's two pints to a quart, and then two Cs in each P cause it's two cups to a pint! having that in my head helps surprisingly often tbh. 1oz is 1/20th of a gallon. as for why it's 16tbps to a cup and 3tsp to a tbsp i don't know

isn't it beautiful that exactly 3π rrads equals out to a nice and comfortable 80 degrees fahrenheit. you'd almost think it's an actual intuitive measurement to use from this impression but you'd be very mistaken

Unfortunately, 80 degrees Fahrenheit is actually 2.99817π Rrad, and 3π Rrad is 80.33° F. You must have rounded somewhere.

Because the conversion factor between Fahrenheit and Rankine has a decimal (.67), no Fahrenheit temperature, if measured as an integer, can possibly become an integer times π when converted into Rrads. But, there might be a integer Celsius measurement that converts nicely like that

As a Metric hater, I would argue that Celsius isn't for science, Kelvin is. But as metric vs SI units go, Celsius isn't that bad.

Well, basically, 0 is very cold, but survivable for humans (with effort), and 100 is very hot, but survivable for humans (with effort). And for the majority of people, the majority of the temperatures they experience will be between 0 and 100 F.

Now, there are several people in Canada and Russia and the like, who will laugh and say they regularly get below 0 F. And those who live in deserts like Arizona who will also laugh and say they regularly get above 100 F, and thanks to global warming the number of people who regularly experience >100 F is growing.

But still, as a general rule, most of human experiences fall between 0 and 100 F. Where as Celsius is based on the behavior of water at a specific pressure and not human life. It's decent for science and engineering because it maths* well, but when dealing with day to day life, its numbers seem even more arbitrary than the way Fahrenheit's were developed. (take this with the grain of salt that I'm American and am used to F, and that people who are used to C are likely to find C natural to use because they're used to it)

*maths as a verb, and not the british version

As an addendum, just because I can. I generally think that most of the the Imperial/American units of measurement are better for day to day life/describing the human experience. As opposed to metric/SI units which were created to be easy to do math with. (and are significantly better for doing science and engineering with) Now, again take these with the grain of salt that I grew up with these units and of course think they're more intuitive, and someone who grew up with metric will of course think those units are more intuitive.

But, in addition to my whole big thing about Fahrenheit above:

A mile is a 15-20 minute walk. An inch is about the length from the tip of your thumb to the first joint. A foot is about the length of your forearm. Pounds is actually a unit of force, and can actually be used for weight, unlike grams/kilograms which is mass, which is not something you really deal with with gravity, and NOT a measure of weight, despite it being used that way (see my other reblog/reblog chain on this post for the full rant)

But, I will be the first to admit that I have no defense for our volume measurements. I don't know if l'd say liters are intuitive, but our method cups, quarts, pints, gallons, ounces, whatever, is not. I've been using them my entire life, and I still don't know the ratios between quarts and pints, and which goes into which however many times. Nor how many cups goes into whichever one of those is smaller.

Well, it is mostly the using grams/kilograms for weight, and variations there upon. Weight is a force, and should be measured using units of force, such as Newtons.

The worst direct experience I ever had with this was, while getting my engineering degree, I did an engineering internship in a metric using country. I assumed that everyone there had an engineering degree and therefor had learned about the glorious science and engineering friendly SI units. The number of times my engineer boss had me take forces I had correctly calculated in Newtons and convert to kilograms so he could understand it was deeply frustrating.

While there, I also learned about a unit called "Kilogram-Force" which I'm pretty sure is just the metric equivalent of lbs-mass, which is a unit I also hate (I prefer Slugs for mass in imperial/american because there's no stupid conversion factor you have to add in). And it's just like, and someone who had some engineering training, Newtons are there, they exist. Please use them, I am begging you!

Like measuring speed in furlongs per fortnight. (an irl friend suggested this one when I told them I was creating this blog).

I mean, I don't know if I could reach anything the seemingly perfect balance of cursed, but not completely obscure, and not too hard for me to do the conversions that is Rrads. And then I don't actually know of any other situations where the same term is used to measure completely different things, such as degrees being used for both temperature and angles.

I mean, I'm always down to learn more about niche cursed temperature or angle measurement systems. But I will almost certainly not be incorporating them

I don't think that's accurate though. Given that Pressure is Force over Area, and Force is Work(Energy) over distance:

you want F/A

A:square acre

W=F*d ∴ F=W/d

W=Energy=eV

d=lightyear

So therefore I believe what you were going for is Electronvolts per lightyear square acre.

Please let me know if there is a flaw in my reasoning, however.
