Sometimes it feels like 90% of the replies to custom MtG card designs are just "That card is SO broken! WotC would never print a card like that!"
Back when I started making custom magic cards about 11-12 years ago, I was very much the sort of novice who would make the ones on the right.
I’ve observed in my years in this space that it’s mostly novice creators who make these two archetypes of bad design. That said there are some vets who will shitpost with the left.
It’s the fact that most people make custom cards very casually and as a short lived hobby that sites like cardsmith (before being bought by an ai tech bro) had the reputation for bad designs. There were 9 cards on front page at any given time: the featured, the most popular from the last 18 hours, and the most recently published cards. That plus the low bar of entry meant that anyone who wanted to try could and it showed.
Sorry for rambling but all this to say is that most people who make cards on either these extremes are most likely still just getting their feet wet, and you shouldn’t be mean to them about it for not having your level of game design understanding.

My sapphic heart heals. When Magic the Gathering debuted their new plane Strixhaven, there was a cute card in which two students from rival schools met up in secret. Adorable, right?
Well, the new set called Secrets of Strixhaven is releasing and...
The two students got together ❤
I am so happy, and oh so gay
Ok so I do still intend to do this blog, it just probably wont have any regularity for the time being.
What I came here to say though is that I was consolidating notes from old journals and notebooks of mine, and it would appear that before I even got a cardsmith account in 2014-2015, I had designed effectively spree in 2013.
I find this really cool because for all the genuine garbage ideas I had back then, some of my particular fingerprints of design were already forming including a love of modality.
I’m proud of my work tonight!
My hobby is making shitpost MtG customs
Ah shit wait I forgot to actually post the things I’ve finished… uhhh crap uhh… I’ll be busy tonight but should have time tomorrow afternoon (EST) bully me into it please!
Bad news: had next to no time to do any card stuffs
Good news: I have nothing but time to kill so should catch up tonight or tomorrow
Worse news: the love of my life is in the ER, and I’m waiting for any details of the situation
Ok so… the actual final product for the cards I promised today aren’t done. (Thanks ADHD)
I’ll be posting hopefully all three of those in air by end of tomorrow!
Day 1. Rabbit took up the bulk of today’s custom card time, and a lot of it was going in circles about what I was trying to do with the prompt.
Cards from Lorwyn Eclipsed previewed at MagicCon Atlanta
Heading to a modern competition tonight! Wish me luck!
Intended posting schedule
While not a strict schedule, I do aim to post here at least once a week. If I can find a rhythm for it, I'll post hopefully that "at least one" on the same day, but for now, no real pattern.
Following up on my previous post with an adjusted version, thanks to the insights of @jadefirewsn.
The 6 mana warp on the previous one, while a hefty upfront cost, did leave a flash 3/2 with an attached counterspell as a known entity, which would cause some oppressive play patterns, as well as some slowed play patterns, where neither player is incentivized to utilize all their mana, lest the counterspell be imposed or needed.
So this new version reduces Warp by 1, making the cost to warp in and get a second etb, still greater than just casting, but it is lower as no longer will you be able to counter, without casting from hand.
Does this count as Fan Art???
Sooo... recently I've taken to watching @drawfee while working on mostly mindless things like sorting Magic the Gathering cards. Helps make it go faster and prevent mistakes as I don't dissociate.
Anyway, I've been making custom magic cards for more than a decade, having had that 10-year mark hit on December 15th last year. So when I see art that strikes me, my go-to response is "I want to make a card with that!!"
I have several more cooking, but first among the numerous pieces made on Drawfee I was compelled to design a card using was @nyaffe's "Jaws in Space" art!!
The rest of this is gonna be me explaining the process and considerations, so if you're not interested in that, that's your queue.
So at the time I had seen the episode featuring this, the set that was about to release, and at time of writing is the most recent release, was a "Space Opera" set called Edge of Eternities. This felt so perfect timing, so I went to use a new mechanic from the set: Warp. (The flavor and setting of the release is where the "Supervoid" comes from too!)
The first thing I had thought of was the ability flash. I knew off the top of my head 2 Sharks that actually had it, one of which I regularly use in a deck. So I went to check if the (now released) set utilized flash for any of the cards with warp. Surprisingly not—it seemed like an obvious pairing for a one-off at the very least to play with the weirdness of warp.
Next was to try and figure what it actually does with it: warp was designed with the implicit need for a triggered ability either on entry or while in play. So I used Scryfall to pull up all Shark creatures, which had a surprisingly diverse mechanical identity despite the slim volume. But among them, there were three that resonated, and another from my early days in magic for a pinch more of precedent.
The one I had on my mind when thinking to check: Pouncing Shoreshark which I use in a deck I have. Second, from the same set originally was Voracious Greatshark. Both had Flash as a means of interacting with the board or shutting down opponents. Lastly there was further precedence in the "bounce effects" in Bigfin Bouncer and for Sharks having Flash in a card from my novice years, Shambleshark.
Those precedents (and lack thereof in the case of the flash & warp) fit together very cleanly and easily. I ran it by a few peers to fine tune it, mostly just tweaking exact costs for warp and cast, but all and all I am very pleased!!
The specific design was unprecedented by official releases, while still perfectly cohesive within the established design space, and it all tied together SO PERFECTLY thanks to the art made by Nathan!
Ok for real now, I think that's all!!! Thank you and bye!!! Definitely gonna post more when it gets made!
Decided to start a dedicated blog for this!
