This is a really good example of how TERFs disguise their attacks against trans men, and why itâs so harmful to consider TERF attitudes towards trans mascs as infantilizing.
The post is made to appear sympathetic to the man they are mocking. âLook at this poor âgirlâ and how heâs mutilated himselfâ sounds sympathetic, especially to trans people who are subjected to aggressive, direct attacks on their identities and humanity.
But this performative sympathy is just a front so that TERFs can enjoy being cruel without appearing as the aggressor. This allows the audience to still enjoy the pleasure of engaging in cruelty while dressing it up as pity.
This plays into the broader tactic TERFs deploy with trans mascs.
Rarely ever do they confront us directly the way they do with trans women.
In fact, because they see us as women, their primary objective is to make sure we are never ever heard at all, so that they can maintain the narrative that none of us would ever transition of our own free will.
Instead, they poison the well. They talk to our âhandlersâ. Our parents, our doctors and psychiatrists, our husbands, boyfriends, our pastors.
The veneer of sympathy is not to appeal to trans men. It is to appeal to those they see as having ownership over us. When trans men fight back against this, the malice comes out in full force.
Trans men do not get attacked less. The attacks are simply not recognized as such, because even in protesting oppression, we place it on a hierarchy.
DES!RE is an experimental film exploring the desire for transmascs, trans men, butch, stud, 'Agressives', masculine of center (MOC) people assigned female at birth. Trans men, femme women and butch and MOC people speak about the complexity of their desire.

A frustrating externality of transphobes having as much of a microphone as they do is that it makes having an actual nuanced and balanced discussion of certain trans topics insanely difficult without someone assuming you've already bought into transphobic talking points. Like it drives me crazy that TERFs stuck their flag in "male socialization". It should not be controversial to talk about how children are raised and socially conditioned differently based on their assigned gender at birth (with wide variance within that conditioning based on a wide variety of other factors) and how this impacts trans people after coming out without this being shorthand for the TERF version of this concept which is basically just "once a man always a man". Similarly, anyone who has spent any amount of time hanging out with groups of trans women can tell you that straight trans girls and lesbian trans girls tend to run in different circles with relatively distinct cultures, but broaching that subject summons the ghost of Ray Blanchard to loom over any observation you make
RIP Ray Blanchard. He's not dead yet but it'd be cool if he was
trans men are underrepresented, but if you start blaming trans women for that you should put a toothpick under your toenail and kick an anvil.
the way anti-trans people speak about us, Iâve noticed that they donât actually treat trans men and trans women that differently. They simply focus their energy on different age groups. When trans men are discussed, we are only children. Teenage/tween trans men are the main focus of transandrophobia from these groups, because we fit the agenda of âvulnerable delicate womenâ who are harder to view as men or people with agency. We are less likely to pass and more likely to have mental health issues, and therefore are easier to pass off as defective and hysterical girls.
meanwhile, trans women are almost exclusively framed as middle-aged or older. This allows them to be viewed as more mature and cunning compared to younger people. In addition, older women are less likely to fit traditional beauty standards, so this gives them an easier time making a âgross ugly predatorâ argument.
however, when forced to acknowledge trans people of other age groups, they pretty much stick to the same playbook. Older trans men are no longer treated as pitiable women, but as some sort of gross third gender, similar to trans women. They are considered part of the ring of predators trying to steal your children. And, importantly, are considered ugly. Transitioned trans men are not seen as attractive to ânormalâ men or women. conversely, young trans women are treated very similar to young trans men. The âtheyâre trying to cut off your sonâs dickâ line is well-used. And they are not treated as a weird third gender like adult trans people, and rather are categorized as vulnerable boys being preyed upon by the âactual villainsâ, adult trans women.
the purpose of this post is to point out that neither trans men or women are privileged for the way that weâre treated. Adult trans men experience very similar treatment as adult trans women, and vice versa. Transphobes do not want you to know that. They want you to think their agenda is to protect trans men and ostracize trans women, because that makes them seem less hateful. But their actual treatment of us contradicts that.
there's this specific grief that comes with being trans and hearing another trans person has died. because no matter how far away they were, it never feels distant, it feels communal. cellular. like someone reached into the wiring of your own body and cut a thread. trans people learn early on in their journey - often even before they begin transitioning - that survival is treated like a political statement. joy is political. transition is political. getting to exist long enough to become boring is political.
and now mourning is political, too.
i'm so sorry, murry foust. i keep thinking about how tired you must have been. how tired all of us are. how humiliating it is that even when we die alone, people still laugh and debate whether we deserved to live a happy, dignified life at all.
there are trans kids online right now learning your name â and the names of juniper blessing, lucas redbeard knapp, aleanna belcher, and davonta curtis â through grief. through fear. through that horrible, familiar ache of "that could've been me." and i hate that this is part of our inheritance from one another. not just chosen family and resilience and beauty â but memorials. vigils. apology letters to ghosts.
you deserved better. you deserved to grow old and live a happy, fulfilled life. all of us do. i promise we will keep fighting for our community to have a better future and we'll carry our lost siblings the whole way through.
unfortunately i have free will so im about to make art that is going to appeal to basically 4 people. let us hope those 4 people follow me.
iâm not gonna lie the erasure of transmasculinity everywhere i turn is really starting to get to me lads. multiple characters that are either gnc or outright trans in their source material are being hyper feminized in their television adaptations. a cis lesbian lgbt historianâs video comes across my path and in it she asserts clearly that stormĂ© delevarie is a cis woman, the comments all agreeing on what a wonderful womanly woman she was, no one does it like women do. another video someone with nearly two million followers posts a video essentially saying trans men donât experience discrimination compared to trans women. it gets tens of thousands of likes. a video of a cis woman in support of trans people next, all the comments talking about how trans women must be women because they are oppressed like women are, i wonder what that makes me to them. two trans men dead this last month. another two trans men with their teeth broken from hate crime assault this week. one of them in a trans sanctuary state, in broad daylight, screaming out for help and everyone around him looks away. looking away. everybody is looking away. we are the thing in the corner of their eye that they would rather not see and what crime did we commit to be treated this way? are we truly seen as so pitifully grotesque for our harmless aberration from the female sex that it feels natural to pretend we are not there? that we were never there? iâm terrified. iâm terrified by what is going to happen to us in the silence. i wish i wasnât.
I think the situation where trans men are now banned from all public bathrooms in the UK is a perfect summation of transandrophobia.
It happened in broad daylight. It was telegraphed ahead of time; TERFs were very clear they wanted trans men removed from public life entirely. Yet during the entire lead-up, and even since then, people have erased transmascs completely from the conversation, saying they weren't in danger like transfemmes are, and in fact alleging that transmascs enjoyed a measure of protection from TERFs, who allegedly just see them as confused little girls they want to protect.
And while people were busy being useful idiots and spreading TERF propaganda for them, while people were busy actively denying the threat to transmascs, TERFs made it so transmascs can be excluded from any public bathroom in the UK.
That's transandrophobia in a nutshell. Trans men don't die in the spotlight, they die in the shadows, and are told they're privileged for their quiet, out-of-sight deaths.
When your art skills canât keep up with your kiddoâs new interests
These are on a video of a cis man calling out a politician for laughing at a program that gives resources to pregnant trans teenagers. Notice how the commenters all say âmenâ rather than boys⊠remind you of anything?
I found out today that there was a (thankfully very ill-fated) attempt to have the entire Wikipedia article on discrimination against transgender men deleted. At first I thought the perpetrator was yet another bargain bin transphobe/TERF act of disruption but apparently not so, she is a trans woman. The user in question had been disputing the use of transandrophobia in the article as being inappropriate, but as other editors pointed out, the way in which it was used was as to be expected (basically saying âhey this term is being used commonly right now in places to describe this phenomenaâ). When attempts to get the article edited to remove any mention of the term failed, this user instead decided to just nominate the whole article for deletion instead. She even went as far as to say âyou will never be a manâ to the editors disputing this, though it was quickly deleted. Itâs the actions of only a single person, but I find this indicative of how the chronic devaluing and othering of transmasculine people and voices in faux-transfeminist spaces leads to action basically indistinguishable from cis transphobes. Resorting to attempted vandalism of an online resource and blatant transphobia is a symptom of this trend that deserves absolutely no patience at this point.
Does that trans man actually "want to be seen as a woman" or is he so afraid of being assaulted in men's spaces if he is outed that he will use women's spaces?
Does that trans man actually "want to be seen as a woman" or is he asking you not to erase his lived experience?
Does that trans man actually "want to be seen as a woman" or has he been scared by all the posts mocking male transition results into thinking he'll be a laughingstock if he starts balding?
Does that trans man actually "want to be seen as a woman" or has he seen masculine people be treated as inherently predatory so often that he holds this back to be seen as a person?
Does that trans man actually "want to be seen as a woman" or is he trying to avoid being treated the way you treat masculine people?
Does that trans man actually "want to be seen as a woman" or is his childhood still influencing how he conducts himself?
Does that trans man actually "want to be seen as a woman" or is he speaking about misogyny he has experienced?
