All parcels undertake a journey to get from the retailer to the customer. This journey can be a mere few miles or a transatlantic voyage. The potential for mishaps to occur is vast, and on the odd occasion parcels do become lost in transit.
On occasion, couriers have chosen to strike. These strikes have been prompted for a wealth of reasons. From inadequate working conditions to insufficient remuneration, and even bullying and harassment, couriers have chosen to put down the parcels in an effort to procure a better working environment.
Whereas consumers cannot really begrudge those that elect to strike (after all a happy workforce is a productive workforce, one more inclined to deliver superlative levels of service), however there are implications for those that have placed, or intended to place a consignment in the future.
Consignment delivery delay
Those that have placed an order for goods and are awaiting a parcel may experience a delay in the delivery of goods. This doesn’t mean that your order will be permanently lost in transit, just that you may have to wait a short while, until any dispute has been resolved and the couriers return to work.
Build up of goods at a depot
It goes without saying that if couriers are not transporting parcels to and from a depot that an excessive amount of goods will pile up inside the depot. Depending on the length of the delivery shutdown period, the depot may be stocked up for days, weeks or in the worst circumstances, even months.
Unhappy customers
No matter the nature of a business, it has one key objective: to deliver products and services. Should any issues arise that prevents the delivery of what has been promised, this will lead to unhappy customers and damage to the brand. Should a courier be unable to deliver what they have promised, the wider implications may damage your brand.
Loss of revenue
Businesses should run like a well-oiled machined. They rely on their employees to deliver the promised products to customers. Should a situation arise where employees are unwilling or unable to work, a business will incur a loss of revenue. For this reason, it’s paramount that sound employee wellness policies are observed.
In order to enjoy consistent success over a considered period of time should deliver on their promises. Should a courier service be plagued by a halt in their deliverable service, the short-term and long-term implications can be vast.
How couriers help consumers during adverse weather conditions
The UK has endured periods of torrid weather in years of late. From prolonged bitter-cold winters to the floods that have decimated large areas of the south, the weather has certainly made its presence felt.
These periods have caused great disruption to various areas of British society, none more so than couriering and transportation. Couriers have found themselves fighting against a swell of conditions that make their job all the more difficult to carry out.
Proactive couriers should take necessary precautions to ensure that their brand reputation doesn’t suffer from the wrath of the weather. Here is a list of what couriers need to practice in times of tumultuous weather.
Operate a transparent service
It is paramount for businesses to establish a relationship of trust with their customers. This trust will encourage customers to use the service repeatedly. Commercial trust can be established in a number of different ways, none more so than by operating a transparent service. Consumers will always use a reliable business that they can trust.
To all affected customers
Today, we are all obsessive, impatient consumers of information. This transcends both or commercial and personal lives. We want to know, and we want to know now. As a courier with knowledge of delays due to adverse weather, it’s paramount that you communicate this to your customers. The easiest way to do this is to announce it online. This will save frustrated customers phoning and enquiring about the delay of their goods. A professional and courteous response demonstrates transparency, honesty and a customer focus.
Email and text alerts
One of the most influential ways that couriers can communicate the progress of customer parcels in by sending SMS text and email alerts, complete with a consignment number. This allows customers to track the progress of their parcel, especially important during adverse weather conditions, when delays are to be expected.
Collection and delivery
Adverse weather conditions will affect collection and delivery times. This is almost guaranteed, after all how can couriers safely transport goods by road in icy conditions? When the weather becomes so torrid, it is simply too unsafe to travel. Keeping customers abreast of the fact that both delivery and collection times may be affected is imperative.
When adverse weather affects certain areas of the UK, inevitably travel will be affected. All good customer-centric couriers should ensure that they provide transparent services that keep consumers informed of any delays and instil confidence that despite any setback their confidence is the utmost priority.
Five reasons courier services get the edge over normal mail
When the need arises to send a parcel, it is important to find a means of delivery that is fast, efficient and reliable, especially in business and commerce. Regular mail services may not offer the speed and efficiency required, so here are five reasons a good courier service is…
