Black men are my brothers, father, family, friends, and colleagues. Black men are more than the hyper-sexualized and violent individuals portrayed by society. In this body of work, I seek to explore the vulnerability, power, and humanity of black masculinity. I want the viewer to become directly involved in the observed domestic environment of the subject. I do this by painting each man in an intimate relationship to his environment. The portraits reflect the variation within their spaces as an extension of the subject’s character, and so, I urge the audience to connect to the uniqueness of an individual instead of a social idea. Each subject has a mood, essence, and experience.

A Y O T Z I N A P A an anthology | una antología a range of creative responses, reactions and even silences to the events that unfolded on September 26th when 6 students were murdered and 43 disappeared in Iguala, Guerrero, México. You will encounter names of the disappeared in these pages and pledges to remember and activate. This project comes into the world on December 12, 2014 to coincide with a day held in regard by the Mexican diaspora that many of our contributors here emerge from and continue to engage in their respective creative and intellectual labors. We have work from contributors in Southern and Northern California, Arizona, Texas and New York. Proceeds from this project go to support the continuing efforts of the Escuela Normal Rural "Raul Isidro Burgos." If we can understand the first silence being President Reagan’s silence around AIDS during the epidemic’s first five years, I am suggesting the second silence is the twelve-year period that began in 1996 with the introduction of life saving medication that prompted a severe decline in the space HIV/AIDS took up in the public sphere, even while there were scientific and political breakthroughs, ongoing artistic and cultural productions around the epidemic, and many new cases of HIV infections. YBCA 100 : QUETZAL

From NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts: The Southern California band Quetzal recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a blowout concert that seemed to attract as many musicians as regular people. The band has maintained such a strong presence in the SoCal Chicano music scene that its members could be considered padrinos and padrinas of that free-flowing musical community.Quetzal is respected and admired as much for its commitment to social justice, activism and education — lead singer Martha Gonzalez has a Ph.D — as for its folk-infused music, which gets a marvelous showcase in this Tiny Desk Concert. While the instrumentation is stripped down, the sound is full; the music penetrates the intellect even as it makes your hips sway.The group runs a tight ship musically: Gonzalez's voice could be heard well past the confines of the Tiny Desk, all the way to our web-designing neighbors; guitarist Quetzal Flores unplugged and worked the Mexican jarana for both rhythm and melody, often at the same time; violinist Rocio Marron wove blues licks into Mexican folk runs; bassist Juan Perez provided a nimble and melodic bottom end.Add it all up and you get a glimpse into a musical vision that inspires as much as it entertains. YBCA 100 : ASHER HARTMAN
I've seen many of Asher Hartman's performance art theater pieces in Los Angeles and San Francisco. I caught Glass Bang written and directed by Asher and staged with Gawdafful National Theater in SF, presented by Southern Exposure. Originally performed as The Florida Room at Cannonball, Miami and subsequently performed as part of The Machine Project’s Field Guide to L.A. Architecture, a part of Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A., an initiative of the Getty, and at Southern Exposure in San Francisco. Glass Bang description: Gavin Rose comes home from a long journey to find his house sitters Evan and Byron have taken his furniture, redecorated, and are living with a barfly, Brian, in his now unrecognizable home. They throw a party for his return, inviting his ex-wife, Cheyenne, and twenty strangers. During the course of the evening, one of the house sitters, Byron, slowly becomes a bird-god, altering the course of the evening from cocktails to an interweaving of subtexts around money, class, possession and murder.
Asher Hartman lives and works in Los Angeles. He graduated in theater at UCLA and in studio art at CalArts. I saw Diana Gameros perform a revelatory set at Studio Grand in Oakland. Ethereal and haunting telling of border stories we so urgently need to hear. From her site: "Diana Gameros is a Latin singer/songwriter. Originally from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and now living in San Francisco, Gameros creates authentic music that reflects the 21st century experiences of a young indie artist at the borderlands between cultures, languages, and genres." A native of Los Angeles and the son and grandson of immigrants from Mexico and El Salvador, Rubén Martínez is a writer, performer and teacher. He holds the Fletcher Jones Chair in Literature and Writing at Loyola Marymount University, and is an artist in residence at Stanford University’s Institute for Diversity in the Arts. He is the author of: Crossing Over: A Mexican Family on the Migrant Trail, The New Americans: Seven Families Journey to Another Country and The Other Side: Notes from the New L.A., Mexico City and Beyond. His new book, Desert America: Boom and Bust in the New Old West is now available in hardcover from Metropolitan/Holt Books.
He is an Emmy-award winning journalist with two decades of experience in print, broadcast and online media. He hosted and co-wrote the feature-length documentary film, When Worlds Collide, shot on location throughout Latin American and Spain, for national PBS.
As a musician, he has collaborated with the likes of The Roches, Los Illegals and Concrete Blonde. A veteran of the spoken word and performance art scenes, he is the host of the VARIEDADES “performance salon” in Los Angeles, interdisciplinary shows that focus on topical themes.
