My username is contradictory, because the me in real life is very much not a heathen. But as pointed out to me by @heatherfield we rare pair shippers are heathen to canon. I am a canon heathen. Voila.

Quick rundown of each propaganda technique:

• Glittering Generalities: Using vague, emotionally appealing words (like “freedom” or “justice”) that sound good but lack specific meaning.

• Transfer: Associating a person, idea, or product with something already respected or disliked (like using a flag, religion, or celebrity image) to carry over those feelings.

• Name-Calling: Attaching negative labels to an opponent or idea to create fear or distrust without real evidence.

• Card-Stacking: Presenting only positive information for one side and leaving out or distorting the negatives.

• Testimonial: Having a famous or respected person endorse an idea, product, or cause.

• Plain Folks: Presenting the speaker as an “ordinary” person to seem relatable and trustworthy.

• Band Wagon: Urging people to follow the crowd with the idea that “everyone else is doing it.”

why are we reducing a woman to her potential love interest? it's rare to see her kind among popular media, and everyone is just talking about her closest male friend. There's so much more to her than that, especially considering her sister and her career. But also why is the creator ignoring the solid gold dynamic? Actually why does she have to get married anyway? she's so complex and real and down to earth. she's like me and she's like women i know. but also, why shouldn't she have romance? Ugh. Louisa May Alcott, what were you doing with Jo and Laurie!! Wait, you thought i was talking about--?

I read a book about Little Women during this past week, and what struck me was how similar the conversations around Jo were to the ones around Mel. Jo March struck so, so many women right where they live - the book has literal pages in the plural with female author after female author talking about how Jo March's impact on them - and in doing so, ignited debates that still last to this day about Jo's romance, Jo and Laurie, Jo getting married at all, and whether Jo is even a feminist figure or not. Interestingly to me, the nature of the debate really depended on the cultural context. The flappers of the 20s reacted very differently to Little Women than its original audience, who reacted differently from its audience today. I think Mel King raises a lot of similar questions, and I kind of wish the questions were more discussed rather than interpretations bludgeoned about.
