LMAO that's a good question, but I think murder is illegal in their setting so probably the latter

I think gms doesn't really force lace to stay. not actively at least. if lace were to leave, she wouldn't, like, chase after her or blackmail her into staying or anything of that sort. mostly because I want to keep this au simple, cute and sweet and also I feel like it would be more realistic for such an au? like, I feel like it's normal, it's something you can see a lot of people deal with. overbearing parents and unconfident children who spiral in constant clashes of personalities, and it won't end until the child moves out and builds their own life independently.

the reason why lace stays is more of a mental state moment. in this post I talked about it in the tags just a little.

it would sort of be a parallel to her constantly needing silk to survive in canon bug world; in this au I don't think silk and magic and such exist. so instead, lace was raised in a way that she constantly feels like she has to depend on someone, she isn't confident on her own, especially now that her sibling has moved out.

so perhaps hornet would help her to get out of the comfort zone more often and build some independency... and perhaps hornet would become lace's new emotional support person. I always will love lacenet co-dependency,,,

and on the topic of lace running away, I want to say it would happen several times. it had happened before hornet began living in the neighborhood, sometime after phantom moved out, because lace couldn't handle living with mother alone. she would get used to it eventually, of course. and when lace gets along with hornet, hornet would make her feel more confident, just like (or almost like) her sibling used to, so now lace occasionally fights with gms and runs away for a day or two. but eventually she returns anyway.

I should develop neighbors au more... especially hornet, because most of the comics I drew were technically about lace. for now hornet looks like she has no personality and it bothers me

I honestly am in LOVE with the differences between your mainline Lacenet and your Neighbors AU Lacenet! I love how the ambiguity in mainline of if they like each other or are just bound together by trauma and circumstance is contrasted by the soft, obvious (to everyone but them) love the two share as neighbors!

It's nice, you can take your pick! And I pick both!

yes!! this is something I've been thinking about lately, it's really nice to have both dynamics and have them separated by distinctly different settings. so I can draw whatever I feel like drawing and never get bored
