BOY OF FIRE! Celebrating my Razewing Ratha's new design with a well earned chibi!
"Mari, on the Xianzhou, the New Year celebration is not always in the same month. But more importantly, there's a custom here for elders, parents, teachers and such to give their juniors red envelopes like these on the new year."
With a grin he presents the girl with an envelope made just for her.
"Now don't go spending it all in one place, but get something you'll enjoy, okay?"
MARI FEELS SHEEPISH AT RECEIVING SUCH A GIFT. The rider rests her hand behind her head, a faint amount of red glowing on her cheeks with childish embarrassment—like a child did from their parents.
She wouldn't have considered Jing Yuan like a parent or guardian figure . . . not outright. But this was the moment where she realized—subconsciously—maybe she was starting to look up to him a bit herself. "Sir, you don't have to . . . u-uh, okay." Smiling, Mari almost felt too humble to accept the gift, but then again, it was rude to deny such a thing. She took the envelope between her hands.
The first thing she realizes is that she isn't sure what to spend it on. Back home, Mari didn't really need to be frugal with her spending money, but she also was the kind of person who didn't spend it frivolously. Unless it was on plushies, necessities or eclectic souvenirs, Mari preferred to put her finances towards things that were really special. So what will she do with the strale on an alien world-ship?
. . . Maybe get takeout to give to the General and Yanqing? They probably couldn't get a day's break in public without being swarmed by the press. "Thank you, sir!"

. . . Should she be worried for Vash right about now
my muse for mari has skyrocketed so hey howdy hey who wants a starter? will be selective~
"Spices Supreme? That's lucky for ya, because I know that place! Don't worry, I'll get you there quickly and safely!" The woman replied proudly, not judging Mari at all. People are different; even she was lost, so she knew what it was like. Maybe that's why the pink-haired woman was so quick to help her? Probably.
"Don't worry. I'll tell you something interesting! To be honest, I don't like walking around Loufu. It's better now, but I also used to get lost in those awful streets. So it's understandable. But… we can't help it. This city is terrible for tourists."
She laughed softly, offering her hand to Mari—so she could take it quickly and safely. She hoped he'd trust her enough.
"THANKS . . ." Mari doesn't hesitate for much longer before she accepts the offered hand, pulling herself to her own feet. Overhead, cycranes glide carrying packages to and fro. The rider had taken to using them as a guide, but her attempts had proven less than successful. "This place reminds me of the cities back home, except a lot bigger and with different architecture."
She wouldn't bother asking March where she was from, because frankly there was a good chance she wouldn't know where that place was. As a child of a world unconnected to the stars, the idea of life on other planets had been quite foreign to her.
"I'm uh, Mari. Sorry for taking up your time . . ."
THWACK. "OW!!"
SHE WHIPS AROUND TO FACE THEM. "What the heck, dude?!"
"GAH--"
How Mari could be so quiet, he would never know, but her voice made him visibly jump and stumble back slightly so he could whirl around to face her.
"Nothing! I was just--"
Defeated, he just sighed, ran a hand through his hair, and watched Mari sheepishly. Yeah, he might as well learn from an expert here--he'd just wanted to at least give it a try on his own. So much for that plan.
"Right... like with a Gunlance." Well, sort of. He could brace that under his arm; not exactly an option with a huge sword. He scratched the back of his head, slowly walking in a circle around Mari to see her posture from every angle.
"You know, I've seen you block with your Greatsword before, but I don't know how you make it work. It seems way too easy. Am I missing something, here?"
"IT'S ALL ABOUT YOUR POSTURE. Just like riding," Mari explains, shifting her feet so that she stood in a more grounded position. The teen adjusts her grip, taking one hand off of the upper hilt and pressing it against the broad side of the weapon. "Have you worked with a sword and shield before? It's a similar concept; you're pushing against with your sword as your shield. You have to keep your posture heavy and grounded as to resist being pushed back, or knocked over.
Then, she lifts the blade over her shoulder. "Personally? I think its a great way to practice building strength. Kayna tells me that in terms of maneuverability? The greatsword is halfway between the Gunlance and the Sword and Shield. We risk dulling or even breaking our weapons when we guard, and we can't move as quick as some lighter weapon users. But, it's more maneuverable than your stuff.
How long, Yanqing let a small chuckle escape. "I would say about twenty minutes no actually more than that. I didn't want to disturb you, so I tried to keep as quiet as possible." He may or may not have lost track of how much time he had actually been standing there. And since he had just tried to move into a more comfortable position, it was probably longer than he previously mentioned.
"Oh, thanks. I could have gotten up by myself though. The help is greately appreciated." Yanqing reached his own hand out, grasping it with hers and goes to stand up. Once he had regained a standing position he looked at her a little more closely now.
"You've really been pushing yourself. It shows, especially....." He pointed at the dummy that had been charred. "I've always been told not to push too hard, since you can exhaust yourself quickly. How about you drink some water." Yanqing had taken notice of her movements prior, but decided not to say anything.
HER GAZE FOLLOWS HIS OWN, BACK TO THE SINGED DUMMY that still smelled thick with burnt cotton and charcoal. In truth, it was almost as if she'd been blind to such an achievement—as though it somehow wasn't good enough. Her strong look falters, overcome with drowsiness and delirium. Mari blinks, squeezes her eyes shut, and reaches to rub them generously in an effort to fight off the exhaustion.
"That's—normal . . ." She waves it off. "Usually I have extra help heating the chamber in my sword, but since I got stuck here I've had to do everything by myself. It's not the hottest I've gotten it."
What is she without her monsties, at the end of the day? Clearing her throat, Mari tries to swallow. Coincidentally it felt dry, and now that Yanqing mentioned it, she was thirsty. "Okay." The rider could be stubborn beyond compare, but at least she knows to eat when she's hungry and drink when she's thirsty. They would need to set up a new dummy after the fact, anyways.
It's as they are walking to get some refreshments that Mari's mind clears, at least enough to try and make small talk. "How many years have you served as the General's retainer . . . ? Was there anyone before you?"
