IF MARI WAS THERE: Mari and her initial distrust of the Hunter's Guild.

On today's episode of the Wilds AU, we cover why Mari is initially both wary and accusatory towards individuals like the Hunter, whom despite the initial hostility that came from mistaking Ratha as a threat, quickly set aside their wariness. While other members of the expedition (the hunters from the other units especially,) were slow to welcome Ratha and by extension Mari, ironically it was Mari who took the longest amount of time to lower her defenses. This is because she and Ratha had been hurt before.

Canonically, Mari's first experiences with the Guild wasn't great. At the beginning of MHS2, a group of hunters are invited to attend a festival hosted by the Mahana Tribe as an effort to stir a little good will. However, the hunters are quick to disrespect and violate their hosts' laws by trespassing on what is considered sacred ground and attacking the Island Guardian Rathalos, AKA the former monstie of Mari's grandfather.

When one of their own is injured in the attack, they're quick to blame the Tribe for failing to alert them about the Rathalos' hostility despite knowingly going after it and raising their weapons at it unprovoked. While the village is essentially on a tight lock down while the hunters prowl the island in search of a 'dangerous rathalos' they were after, Mari has to escape in secret with Ratha's egg.

I could go into the whole spiel with Kyle and how he spied on Mari and co and fed intel back to the Hunters and Scriveners, but basically those same hunters were hired by the Scriveners to collect Ratha later on, not knowing that that same group had their own agenda and plans to pawn off their quarry to an elder-dragon worshipping cult.

I stand by this when I say I don't believe at all that the Hunter's Guild approved of the behavior the hunters that visited Mari's island and later stole Ratha exhibited. In fact, I like to believe that after word got out about what was attempted, they worked with the Royal Scriveners to send Guild Knights after every last one and pick off every member of that troupe.

However, Mari's first impression of the Hunter's Guild was basically the worst of the worst, the bottom of the barrel. So she is of course, understandably wary of and distant towards the Expedition team when she first meets them. Literally the only thing that prompts her to stick around besides Ratha recovering from an injury, is Nata.

Mari sees a kid who has lost everything, who doesn't know if he has a home to return to, and who is uncertain of monsters. She feels bad for him, has a soft spot for her younger peers and a bleeding heart. Aside from that, she doesn't initially trust that he's in good hands despite the obvious, thanks to her own bias.

So she kinda . . . noses her way in in order to get a sense of the mission and see it herself that Nata gets home. Obviously she doesn't try to take the responsibility the Expedition has over him, but she both wants to be an extra hand to help, and maybe foster a better understanding of the role monsters play in the world.

As the story goes on, Mari starts to trust Avis Unit more and more, and even opens up a bit to the other members of the Expedition. Unfortunately, that progress comes crashing down for just about everyone but the members of Avis and Astrum Unit when the Cult arrives.

Imagine the only way to cure Crystalisis is to use an Aenshin but it isn’t even like harvesting blood for a medicine or anything like that. It’s just stupid. Like Simon and the Heir go to visit the calf as it’s getting bigger and bigger by the day, to the point this is a small car-sized sky whale. Lil guy is definitely not so little but still not too big. It floats right up to Simon to greet him, investigates his arm and just… bites him. Baby Aenshin’s got soft baleen so it doesn’t hurt at all, it’s just super gross and slobbery. The Heir and Simon are freaking out, because hello elder dragon biting arm?? Baby Aenshin’s got his whole arm in its mouth and just gumming away on it with a purpose, lil guy is really going at it. By the time they manage to pry his arm free from this stubborn baby sky whale, the Crystalisis starts to loosen and fall off like scales. And Simon isn’t sure whether to cry with relief or be peeved off that the cure for Crystalisis has been baby whale spit this entire time.
