The cold wind somehow soothed his nerves. Copia had been working here for several years, and recently he’d been promoted to Cardinal —which meant it was time for his first summoning: calling forth his subordinate. They went by many names, but most commonly, ghoul. These beings were flesh-based, derived from animal or human remains, and categorized by their elemental affinities. For a first summoning, one typically chose a relatively calm type: air or earth ghouls; more extravagant choices would be water or fire ghouls. And summoning a Quintessence? That was considered nearly impossible for a necromancer at the very start of their career.

Copia had trained in secret, away from prying eyes—so technically, summoning the latter type posed no real difficulty…

Yet the fear persisted, undiminished.

All that remained was to see this through to the end.
