The original post is deleted but I still want to give my cents because I want to. Because I'm nosy. Anyway to engage with the original premise for the love of the premise:
I think I'm curious about why it would matter? I mean...even irl, real people with real emotions, we're all a little programmed one way or another. Free will is what you make of it. There's something running through you and through me and there are memories you can't access that nonetheless shape and mold you. You might be made of rock and less moldable in X way and more in Y way, and I might be made of clay, someone else of metal, but all these materials can be shaped by something and they are.
I think in the end there isn't much of a difference between the idea of Pearl partially preferring Rose due to her programming and you or me preferring certain types of people. I mean. We were all programmed to. Does it really matter if you like Caroline from dance class because she listens to you or if you like her because she is social in exactly the way love was given to you when you were a kid, or exactly in the way it was not (and you don't remember because you were too young)? Does it matter if you like people who are flexible with their time because when you were a toddler you cried and cried and nobody ever came and/or your parents made it clear that they had no time for you when you were a little bigger?
Tl;Dr: We're all programmed and that's okay 👍.
