2 of Malaysia’s most essential and long running DIY spaces have come under attack this year! THE WALL in Batu Pahat was victim to fire with much of it’s music equipment and stage set up being destroyed! This space has been running successfully for the past 5 years and is an essential link between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Hosting countless gigs for bands from around the world, the space is self run, funded, and operated by the generous DIY community. The damage here is truly heartbreaking!
RUMAH API in Kuala Lumpur is one of Malaysia’s most loved DIY spaces and home to TANDANG record store, a hub for the South East Asian underground community. Supporting countless gigs, bands, travelers, alternative thinkers and all in between, RUMAH API is incredibly important to the South East Asian underground network.
In what was seen as yet another attack against democracy and freedom of speech, police raided the premises of Rumah Api on the 28th of August and arrested 161 individuals at a music event. Most of the detainees were musicians and social activists. Malaysia is a conservative Muslim nation and the radical ideas supported by the underground music community are often seen as a threat by the police and government. Some people were held without charge for several days and subject to harassment and abuse at the hands of the police.
Money donated will go towards replacing equipment damaged at THE WALL and to support the ongoing legal fees of those detained at RUMAH API.
