The Jinx

Once upon a time there was a jinx. Normally jinx are fickle creatures flown to fancy and full of mischief, but if they love, they love so deeply that they cannot live without their love.

And this jinx, it loved someone, a child who at first loved it too. It loved this child so deeply, so strongly. It was there for the child as she grew, it took care of her when she was sick. It was there when she was learning to read and write, when she was heartbroken, and when she fell in love. It was there when she lost that love, when her love was buried. And it held her when she cried and at night it would rock her baby’s crib so she could sleep more easily.

It was there when her baby grew weak and could barely cry. It was there when her baby died, when she blamed the jinx for her misfortune for most believe that jinxes are bad luck. She sent it away.

She sent it away, but it came back to say goodbye just one last time. But as it came to the house, it was too dark. A record skipped. The house was too cold.

Once upon a time there was a jinx and this jinx, it loved someone, a child who first loved it too and it was there at the place where she died in a tub of red. And the jinx cried.

And it cried.

And the jinx was no more.

“Can you please”

“Can you please help me with these?”

In true Dan fashion, the albino goth stood in the doorway to the floor level apartment struggling with several bags of groceries balanced in his arms and several more hanging down at his elbows. His slim frame seemed to buckle and shiver under the weight of it all as he puffed air out in an attempt to clear his white hair away from his eyes. Heathen glanced up in a bored fashion, then looked back down at the magazine she was flipping through.

“I could, but I don’t want to,” she replied blandly, absently turning a page. It seemed to be a magazine in Korean which didn’t make sense since no one in the apartment building spoke Korean. Well, except maybe Spencer, but he’d never tell anyway.

“Please?!” The word came out strained as Dan began to buckle under the weight of the bags, struggling forward in the hope to get them to the kitchen counter before he collapsed.

“What’s going on?” A young man with gray dreadlocks down to his elbows wandered into the main living room, yawning and adjusting the waistband on his sweatpants. He paused a moment to blink at the sight of skinny little Dan trying to carry bags upon bags of groceries before his brain seemed to register what was happening and helped Dan by taking some of the parcels from him. “You could have helped!” He called over his shoulder to Heathen.

“But I’m comfortable,” came the simple reply and there was an ‘uhf’ as the young man and Dan set the groceries down on the counter before the young man made his way back into the living room.

“So was I about a minute ago.”

“Well that’s your fault then, Spencer,” Heathen told him.

Spencer placed his hands on his hips before shaking his head and turning away to help the albino boy in the kitchen unload the groceries. “Unbelievable.”

I Live in a House

I live in a house with no sound, No rumblings, No quiet whispers, No chill as a loved one speaks softly in my ear.

There is no light in my home, No sunrise, No bright moonlight filtered and faded By clouds and curtains to shimmer lightly on the face of my lover As they lie beside me.

There is no faith in my home, No God to grant peace, No place for my happiness, No one to cleanse my sins of the day When I come home

Weary

And dripping

With blood that’s not mine.

I live in a home with no sound And no sight And no faith And no hope.

I live in a home called my mind.
