Confessions Of A (Crazy) Cat Person
how it all began & then some….
Grade 9 was the first time we were introduced to Cruella’s chamber of Saturday school and weekly unit tests. It was also the year I discovered I’m an out and out cat person…
One weekend, my mom with my sister went to visit her friend whilst I slaved over a pile of pending practical files. They left with a plastic box of cake or something and came back with a huge cardboard box, which my driver very casually dumped in the corner and clocked out for the day. My mom wasn’t home yet so I didn’t bother about the box. Just seconds after I made my mind to feign excitement over the mundane contents of the box, who should walk in but my sister with a sweeping declaration that we are now proud pet owners; a statement to which I told her that the rats we’ve been trying to catch aren’t for taming purposes!
I don’t remember the rest of the conversation but somewhere during the course of this quip-py conversation, my mom (in an attempt to said conversation), asked me to just “open the box already”. So I did, and out jumped my first loves. Yes, she’d bought home two cats. They were about two months old and were living in mom’s friend’s compound. My mom caught a glimpse of them and fell in love with them and so they became an addition to the family. Watching those cats run all over the room looking for a place to hide from all the strange sights and sounds made me so happy- I finally have a pet…well, pets! And so began the saga of the Lokur cats….
Since we’d literally picked them up from the street, the first order of business was to take them to a vet and get them vaccinated, weighed and registered for regular check-ups. During the initial period, we were a little lost…both my parents being dog people, treated the cats like a dog. For the first few weeks, we put them out in the balcony after dinner time along with their food bowl and litter box. Speaking of which, it was a wonderful surprise to discover that cats are born toilet trained. Put out a litter box for them and that’s it. So anyway, over time the ‘rules’ were relaxed and the cats were all over the house. Since there were 2 of them, they wasted no time in marking out their territory, favourite places to catch a nap and of course preferred members of the family. Soon 2 cats turned to 4 and 4 to 6. As of today, I have one cat- Noodle. And no, I will not tell you why she’s called Noodle :)
So, a pet is a pet, right? Wrong! If you have a cat, you have called upon yourself, being tagged in anything cat related, till.you.die. It’s fine as long they’re cute memes or GIF’s…cats do after all, rule the internet. But for the love of God, don’t tag me in posts which talk of the ill-effects of keeping a cat. I refuse to believe that any pet owner (cat, dog or otherwise) would turn suicidal or suffer from depression, regardless of what ‘science’ says. Seriously...stop with the stereotype.
Just because I’m a cat person does not make me anti-dog. Yes, if I had a choice between keeping a dog or a cat as a pet, I’d pick the feline clan any day. That makes it a choice not a death wish. And of course my cat is going to be snooty around you. Your dog barks when I walk into your house, while my cat decides to not give a fuck. There’s really no deeper meaning to it. Cats are just as loveable, toilet trained and contrary to popular belief, loyal. And FYI, I have no qualms of becoming a crazy old cat lady. If I find someone who loves me even half as much as my cats have, I’ll feel blessed :)…
Being a pet owner is a wonderful experience, no matter ‘what’ pet. The way you smile wall-to-wall when they do something cute, the momentary anger when they shred a page of a book and the frenzy of last minute negotiations with God when you can’t find them (I had a cat who loved wandering off. The longest he’d been gone was 5 days. Turns out he trotted out the door and showed up covered in generator diesel. Giving him a bath- not a fond memory)….coming back to the point, get a pet if you don’t have one. Don’t miss out on this!
Yes, we like to be a part of everything that goes on in the house!
