I seriously do not get how people don't understand this. The absolute dependence so many have with AI, so quickly, is utterly baffling. They've completely given up all thought, all pursuit, all effort because it's the Cool New Thing. We will NEVER be able to look at content online any more without thinking "Is this AI?". From funny voices and videos of famous people playing CoD, to fake smear campaigns, product placements and scams using those very same voices and faces. How about academics? Why bother writing a paper on a subject when AI can do it for you? Teachers not bothering to create course work because it's easier to have an AI plan a lesson for you. Doesn't matter if the information is incorrect because the person checking the work isn't real! It's yet another AI, working off of the same bungled data that yours spewed information from. People are giving up the very idea of THINKING, of CREATIVITY and CONNECTION to a machine purely for the sake of convenience. Tech-bros stopped reinventing the train for once, instead they created The Torment Nexus We all thought it was going to be some over the top, horrid machine of endless pointed blades. It's not. It's a recursive river of information, slowly poisoning itself on it's own bad data while people unknowingly or without care, drink from it deeply. People will suffer, knowledge will be lost and those terrible few will use it to obscure their crimes more so than they already do. Please, don't use AI. Be human. Struggle. Grow.

Shakespeare has like a character named Antonio in about four or five of his plays, and the dude is usually somewhat minor, involved with the sea and possibly other men. So I have this theory that Shakespeare had a buddy named Antonio who was basically the Yoko Ono of the King’s Men.

Antonio would be this gruff, sexually-ambiguous, partially-literate Italian merchant/sailor dude who would occasionally show up in London and end up hangin’ out and drinking with the actors. Shakespeare would be like “EEEEYYY, come join in, brah!” and invariably write him a role in the show. The actors HATED it because he was terrible at acting, so terrible that he could never even remember his character’s name and Shakespeare would usually have to switch it to Antonio. Eventually, everyone just got so fed up with Antonio mucking up their shows that they burned down the Globe.

Every time someone complained about their role, Shakespeare would be like, “Nah, it’s cool, I’ll just give it to Antonio,” and suddenly everyone would be A-OKAY with their part.

He would like sit in Antonio’s lap while giving direction to the other actors and people would ask, “Are you guys… like… dating?” and Shakespeare would be like, “Are you kidding? No way, we’re just bros. Are you UNCOMFORTABLE with close male friendships?” and proceed to, like, make out with Antonio.

He wrote him like 75 bro-nnets, which are exactly the same as romantic sonnets but with ‘if you were a girl’ written on top of them, and when girls tried to pick him up after shows, he’d yell, “ANTONIOS BEFORE HOS.”

You’ll never believe what concept is being produced at the Folger Shakespeare Library in my own city. I have nothing to do with this and I doubt they’ve read this years-old post— I’m sure it’s just a coincidence:

Whenever I tell people that I dream of playing as many versions of Cinderella’s stepsisters as possible, I have to mention the mildly deranged illegal production of Cinderella I was in when I was 12.

I used to go to this small drama camp as a kid that was entirely run by one nice lady, I believe named Carol. We would put on abridged minimalist versions of popular musicals at a local church with only one week of rehearsal. These weren’t licensable junior versions. Carol created them herself.

She wrote the scripts to include the major plot highlights and famous lines from the various musicals and she arranged and accompanied all of the songs on the piano herself. We did Annie, Mary Poppins, the Wizard of Oz, and, the year before I came, Peter Pan. These shows were definitely illegal, but they were so small that nobody really noticed, and they were a ton of fun. The camp was also extremely affordable, so nobody was getting rich off of it.

But Cinderella, my final production with them, was next-level. When I arrived for the first day of camp, I was curious to see if it would be the Disney version or the Rodgers and Hammerstein version.

It was both. And neither.

Carol somehow wrote an almost entirely original book for Cinderella that used the best songs from both the Disney and R&H versions. That meant that I, as a stepsister, got to sing the “Stepsisters’ Lament,” a peak song if you ask me, but adorable little kids playing mice also got to sing “Cinderelly, Cinderelly.”

The one thing about combining both versions is perhaps an overemphasis on the Fairy Godmother, because the songs “Bibbidy Bobbity Boo” and “Impossible” are both no-brainers to include. But somehow, things worked out perfectly there, too, by splitting the role.

See, we didn’t just have a Fairy Godmother.

We also had a Fairy Godfather.

I was 12, so I didn’t quite get the joke, but as an adult, I’m obsessed with the implication that Cinderella got her dress, slippers, and carriage through some kind of vague affiliation with the mafia.
