Why is so much adult oriented 2d animation bastard ugly, do they know they don’t have to do that? The characters don’t have to projectile vomit all the time either, but maybe that’s asking too much

So much of my work day is spent telling children/tweens variations on “I didn’t watch it because it was ugly.”

“But Teacher Rav, [show] isn’t like kid animation, it’s rated 14/MA/etc.”

Yes, and a) my gentle reminder to please talk to your adults about your media b) remember every family has different rules about media and c) I struggle with most animated media because I require microexpressions for nuance, and d)it is ugly and gross just to be edgy and I am not interested in this that are ugly and gross for that reason.

I don’t mind animated shows that are challenging. I don’t mind show that address living in a body being kind of gross and messy at times. I do mind shows that are gross just to be edgy, or that are animated poorly as a stylistic choice.

I’m so touched by how lovely everyone has been about my little foray into art. I joined art fight (and reactivated this account) to provide support for my students and take some risks with them! I can’t tell them they have to be willing to be bad at something to become good at it if I won’t do it myself.

And yes, I do wrangle furries professionally! Among other classes I teach, I run the only (afaik) furry and therian club for kids 18 and under! I have six groups of age 8-12 and two of age 13-18. I’m background checked through my teaching platform and we do visual check-ins for safety. Many of my 13+ age students are art fighting this year.

Never thought I’d end up working with furries in a professional, academic capacity, but here we are! My degrees are a BA in English and an MA in Professional Writing, with professional certification in DEIB. I’m also a longtime convention panelist & moderator, and I run young furry meet-ups at a few cons. It’s amazing where life takes you!
