if you think for even just a second how fucking crazy bonkers it is that women are so frequently kept from being protagonists or important or fully realized characters when its like. That is literally 50% of the world population. Half of all people (more or less. hopefully more as time marches on!) are women. And you look at media and think about how many protagonists are men and their best friends are men and the ensemble cast is 80-100% men and the fandoms are about men and the romances are about men. well. YOU GO INSANE

this has probably been talked about before but damnit i want to see more of the death note characters struggle.

i want to see light flinching at fireworks and his father's touch after the faked execution. i want to see him habitually turning to an empty chair, picking up a tennis racket, absentmindedly making tooth-rotting coffee before he realises L isn't there anymore.

i want to see misa installing multiple locks on her door after her parents' murders, making multiple trips at night just to check the doors are locked. after she gets married to light, i want her to complain to the empty air, to say a hasty goodnight before realising that no-one is there to listen any longer.

i want to see kid L staying up late alone, face lit by a computer screen. i want to see him before his death: i want to see his last moments with the man who raised him, his last night with the only one who understood him, him knowing that death's finally starting to catch up.

i want to see near trying to live up to the title of L. i want to see him staying up more at night, dropping sugar cubes in his tea even though he knows it's stupid.

i want to see mello digging his nails into his skin, chugging energy drinks, just to stay up and study for a little while longer. i want to see him doing anything to win and regretting it later on when he's alone. i want to see him keeping matt's goggles in his pocket after his death.

i want to see matt blaming himself after he sees mello spiral, maybe even blaming L and purposely scoring lower on his tests so he won't become the next L. i want to see matt choosing to follow mello out of the orphanage anyway and them having a big argument about it because mello didn't want matt to have to sacrifice everything he'd known for him.

i want to see kid sayu trying her best to live up to her brother's image, trying to be 'the smart one' because that's what light was and so she figures that's what she has to be, too.

i want to see sachiko, after her son's and husband's death, make a portion large enough for four, set a table for four and leave the door open every day at nine until she realises no-one is going to come home.

okay so i know that death note is an action-centered anime and having things like these would slow down the plot and maybe bore the readers. but i also think that all these show their humanity and also is part of the problem that light and L both show the readers: sometimes you get so caught up in the game, in the thrill of it all, that you forget the pawns you're playing with are not plastic pieces but real, living human beings.

annoys me that 聽見下雨的聲音 is the most anime lawlight song in existence and 90% of the fanbase will never happen upon it because of the language barrier

anyway that got me to watch the dinner scene in the anime and maybe i am just a pedant but why does it read vastly differently what is happening

like obviously the main difference is that anime kiyomi laughs when misa implies she'll be executed while manga kiyomi looks genuinely uncomfortable but like there's so many little differences too it's like

when misa says she's going to announce her engagement to light at the music festival, manga-kiyomi drops her knife. we zoom in on anime-kiyomi's hands but they don't shake at all

there are so many hidden eye cues around manga-kiyomi as soon as misa mentions the engagement and she pauses way more than anime does

in the manga misa says "oh well, i liked kira too but kira's going to be caught sooner or later." in the anime she specifically says "light will catch kira sooner or later." (this is true of both eng and jpn manga and anime, i checked)

and this is why kiyomi laughs in the anime! because light is kira! because it exposes just how little misa knows about him! whereas in the manga the taunt is much more effective because kiyomi and light do in fact have to hide what they're doing from the task force constantly!

and of course manga-kiyomi looks so fucking annoyed while leaving while we don't get to see anime-kiyomi's face at all after she laughs

so somehow despite having almost the exact same dialogue this meeting is decisively a victory for misa in the manga and kiyomi in the anime. fascinating how much you can change with so little

Light should have been WAY more injured multiple times in death note!

A) having a blank gun fired an inch away from his eye—this should have put him in this hospital. Like. Severely put him in the hospital with potential total loss of his eye. He would likely have head trauma from the event as well.

Imagine L feeling genuinely slightly guilty about the whole thing and having the world’s best medical team (and plastic surgeons haha) on standby <3

B) Light should have come out of his physical fights with L with broken bones. L can hold himself back, but you can only reduce the force of a capoeira kick so much. Nat Geo estimates a kick (similar to what L does) would generate nearly 1800lbs of force. A rib bone breaks under 740lbs and 900lbs can break a femur (one of the hardest bones to break!).

When L kicked light and he went flying while hand cuffed, Light should have dislocated his arm. (And then L should have been the one to put it back into place) (wait I’m giving myself writing ideas lol)

Honorable mention) Light’s solitary confinement should have had a MUCH bigger impact on him mentally. It was nearly two months if I remember correctly. There is a wealth of information about how even day to week long stints in solitary psychologically change people forever.

animanga light yagami with chronic hanahaki manages it so well that no one outside his family (+ later ryuk) (+ even later L) (+ even even later misa) knows. so well that he himself forgets sometimes and then breaks into a coughing fit when he manic cackles or screams too loud. this does not affect canon whatsoever other than him having to explain it to ryuk like

ryuk: so humans can be so bored that it kills you? man, i'd be dead a hundred times over by now!

light: haha, count yourself lucky for not being a human, i guess

ryuk: but wait, how come you've still got it, then? you can't be bored anymore. i haven't been bored a single second with you!
