Summary:
Years have passed since Alis last graced the halls of the Spring Court Manor. This Calanmai she returns to her old home with plans to help Elain and Feyre with the Calanmai celebrations. Unexpectedly flooded with memories she thought long forgotten and a shocking reminder the sort of things the high fae of Prythian can get up to she must carry on - as she always does.

Tumbling carriage wheels skidded over small stones, kicking up gravel and dust in their wake. It was enough to wake Alis. Coming off the main road and heading towards her old home; the quality of the country roads changed drastically. No longer were they kept in tip-top condition from a tithe whenever the High Lord pleased, and while the Manor grounds were not as they once were; Alis had hope upon hearing all the good work Elain and Lucien had been doing. This was how she knew she was nearly there - knew that a place she had avoided in recent years was getting closer by the minute.
She peaked out her window, her gently ageing hands pulling back the gauzy window covers. Purples filled the sky, turning into blues and a hint of colour just blushing through the treeline. Sun not yet Risen; but Dawn would be here soon enough gently waking the occupants of the Spring Court with her warm carass.
Alis turned her face back to the other occupant of the Carriage, Tarrant was stretched out on the seat opposite her, sleeping as best he could. She smiled at his awkward angle, his strong legs and arms filling the compact space, and head leaning against the side wall - drool just escaping the bottom corner of his mouth. His brother, Thackery, was sitting outside with the driver. Sword by his side, keeping an eye out for any unsavoury Fae - you never could tell what was out there among the trees. Yes, things were better but Fae didn’t need a war to show their nasty side. Alis knew how quickly a court could turn.
Bending over, she reached for her cornflower blue notebook and opened it up to her to-do list. Sketching vines and little blossoms around the outside as she read, reminding her of what she needed to do today...
Arrive At Spring Court.
Have the Boys help unload the Carriage
Find Elain and Feyre to confirm the plan for the evening
Give Gifts from Tarquin
Help Nuala and Cerridwen in the Kitchen with some Spring Treats
Ensure all the bonfires are set up
Help Elain with Calanmai Feast Festivities
The list seemed manageable, she was just here for a day or two to help make sure things ran smoothly.
“Of course they would.” She muttered to herself, upon talking to the girls they seemed to have everything under control.
The Carriage jumped into the air and Tarrant’s leg kicked out making Alis drop her notebook.
“Everything alright in there?” Thackery called out.”It was just a little pot hole.”
“Yes, Perfectly fine… I think your brother is waking up now” Alis called as she retrieved her notebook.
“mm…. just five more minutes... the sun’s not up, and it's cold... Just five more.” Tarrant mumbled.
Alis’ brought out her motherly tone - the one she used when trying to wake up two teenage boys, “Tarrant, we will be there soon and you will want to make a good impression.”
Tarrant mumbled some more as he rolled deeper into the chair, pulling his long legs up onto the seat in the fetal position.
“You would think you were still a teenager and not a man in his 20’s” Alis said under her breath as she tidied the carriage.
The horses whinnied and she twisted back into her seat just as the Carriage skidded on another patch of road. Tarrant banged his head against the front wall of the Carriage.
“Will you learn how to drive!” he shouted from his freshly ruined slumber.
“Aw, is the baby a little sleepy?” called his brother through the front window.
“I’ll come show you who's sleepy!” He then emphasised this shout by banging on the wall of their small portable room.
“I’d like to see you try, ” Thackery laughed from the front.
“BOYS!” Alis shouted, “I don’t need you two reverting to petty squabbles today! I need to be seen in a good light by the High Lords and Ladies. So you two will get along! Or so help me I will not let you attend tonight.”
The boys both quietened down, looks passing through the window, neither wanted to miss out on their first Calanmai.
Alis knew what they were thinking, she could read them like a book - they didn't want to miss out. When they were younger she would tuck them into bed and tell them to stay there all night. Andras would help her out and pop back to Alis’s cottage to check on them.
“Yes she still had things to do, no she couldn’t stay with them,” she reflected on her conversations with them - it was always a strange evening. It wasn’t the High Lord who sent out the food or ordered scullery maids about their duties, even though she was busy and couldn’t be with them she made sure that the boys stayed safe and away from the rabble Calanmai brought in.
Tonight would be a new experience, the two boys were well grown up now. Having spent their teen years along the shores of the Summer Court they attended many parties - but none as raw and wild as Calanmai. Well she hoped they didn’t attend those parties, that was not something to think about now or she would spend her day worrying about them - which she did not need to do.
She had been grateful for these years of peace where the boys had focused on their studies. Thackery had a gift with swords and loved being around horses while his brother was fond of the sea - learning to become a sailor among Summer’s royalty.
She supposed it was why he was able to sleep anywhere - the hull of a grand ship at sea would be bumpy and cramped for his tall lithe body and he made that work.
Alis sighed, breathing in memories, the sandalwood scent of Tarrant’s clean hair, the lemon and rosemary soap she used to clean their clothes. They were getting to an age where they were completely their own people and wouldn't listen to or need her advice much longer.
Warming her hands on her legs she hoped her sister from the other world was able to see everything she had done for them. She looked back up at Tarrant, she was so very proud of what the boys had achieved, of how handsome and thoughtful they were - so much like her own sister.
Alis sighed.
“You alright Auntie A?” Tarrant asked, his stormy eyes opened, one eyebrow raised in a question and focused on her own,
“Yes, just swimming in memories. I’ll need your help today - don’t go wandering off” Alis replied.
Tarrant just nodded and pulled the curtains back from all the windows letting in what little light there was.
“Look who's joined the world of the living, on this fine Calanmai.” Thackery called back.
“I was awake most of the night from the Inn, brother, while you slept - so keep your mouth shut.”
Thackery laughed and talked quietly to the driver again.
“Sure you’re alright?” he said.
“Yes dear, lots of things to get done, no time for nonsense.” Alis smiled and her nose pulled her to look in the direction of the window Tarrant had just opened.
Scents of foxglove and honey suckle drifted through the cold air. Alis could see the bluebells along the edge of the road now, meadowsweet and then wild lavender interspersed and then bramble and ivy going back into the underbrush. The Summer Court, while lovely, did not have the same smell or colour as the Spring Court. The morning dew and seemingly slow sunrise offered its own miasma that some would hate but Alis loved. The spirits were returning from evening wanderings to their places of rest tiptoeing over the lush carpets of flowers; scents lifting in their wake for the living to enjoy. Pink and orange light filtered through the trees ahead and the shape of the Manor house slowly rose from the earth in front of them.
“I miss it here.” Alis said to herself in a soft ache.
“We couldn’t have come back sooner Auntie A, it wasn't the right time, and just think we can come back whenever we like now - things are better now.” he said with soft determination as if saying it would make it true.
She knew he was right. The Spring Court before had not been safe. Even when the war with Hybern was done the ruins left in its wake were no place to bring up the boys. But a piece of her heart belonged in Spring and being back just made her realise it more.
“Nearly here Aunty A!” Thackery called out, the Carriage came to a stop and he opened the wooden door. “Did you want to freshen up before we arrive?”
“I’ll be just a moment,” Alis said as she climbed down the wooden stairs lifting her skirts as she went, “I need to change into something a little bit nicer.” She couldn't have Elain think she wasn't putting an effort into this celebration and she was sure to see some of her old friends in the Manor.
“Maybe you two should both freshen up too, I’ll let you decide what that means, but please… Please remove any foul horse odors,” she said as she walked off into the nearby scrub before shouting back “And Don’t eat the macaroons! There is always cheese and bread in the box under the seat if you’re starving.”
The trees always welcomed her back into the fold, no matter where she was in Prythian, she was at home among their sturdy structures. She placed a hand on one gnarled trunk, “Hello old friend” she whispered and went to get changed.
*
“Ready?” Tarrant asked.
He looked very handsome, changing into some slim black breeches and a crisp white sailors shirt.
“Where’s Thackery?” She couldn’t see him near the carriage at all and she quickly spun around to find him behind her -
“Boo! I’m the Bogge!” he said with arms coming up in a ghoulish manner and a massive grin on his face. Tarrant started laughing on the other side of her and Alis just stared her nephew down. He dropped his arms to his sides and looked down in an apology.
“Don’t make that joke around Feyre!” she chided.
“Aww it was only a little fun, you were taking ages - look, the sky is almost completely orange now.” Thackery gestured to the very orange sky speckled with green before turning blue.
“Yes, exactly - we had better get a wriggle on,” she looked at Thackery and pulled him in for a hug “Stop growing so fast my boy.”
Thackery was wearing deep brown leather breeches and a crisp white shirt but over the top of it was a bandolier that reminded her so much of her old High Lord. Young and carefree - before Amarantha. Strong arms, knives at the ready.
“Be sure to put those away once we reach the Manor,” she said softly patting his chest.
Thackery jumped up into the driver's seat drawing attention to the fact the driver had gone.
“Where is Doug?” Alis asked.
“Sleeping in the back.” He offered a hand up to Alis. “Want to see the Manor from the best seat in the house?”
Alis nodded, it was much nicer to see her old home from the front of the carriage rather than a small window and climbed up and brushed down her purple skirt to remove any creases.
Tarrant tied down all the bags and gifts and climbed back into the carriage and they were off.
Thackery was right - The road before them was the final hurdle and she was home, Hedge mazes and water features ventured off to the right of the road and to the left were small paths leading into dense bush and small havens away from the hubbub of Court. Off in the distance manicured lawns stretched in green to the horizon. She looked down one well trodden path knowing that's where Andras used to take a shortcut to her cottage. And the next path after that winding off into a small crag with a cave and the little fae who dwelled in their tiny kingdom. The wild flowers began to recede as lines of perfectly kept hedges lined the roadway, bulbs erupting from the earth in a swathe of colour. To contrast, Alis saw in the distance the overgrown rosegarden of Tamlin’s mother. Some things were kept nice - others appeared to have lost their importance.
The carriage stopped at the main entrance. Everything was still and quiet, the remains of a sunrise with baby pink sky blending into light blue signaling the start of Calanmai.
“Are they welcoming us Alis? Or are we meant to just go to the stables around the back.” Thackery asked as they pulled up to the House.
“I’m not sure, I was under the impression that I would meet Feyre and Elain here, perhaps they are just busy organising things.” She worried her fingers and Thackery reached for them reassuringly.
“It’s fine, we will unload most of the goods for the house here and take the rest around the back - nothing to worry about.”
“Yes, you're right, of course you're right.” Alis smiled a small smile and hopped down.
Looking around she could see the decorations had been hung. The Manor house was quiet but off in the distance Alis could hear the other workers getting things organised.
“Let me just get my list,” she reached into the carriage and pulled her small round bag from underneath the coachman.
“He will have to wake up soon enough,” she grumbled.
“Let him have a few more minutes, it's been a long night and it's going to be an even longer one.” Tarrant said - climbing out.
“Ok boys, please take all the food boxes round the back of the patio to the back kitchen door, it's not too far and I think you can manage.”
“Should we take them inside?” Tarrant asked.
“No, not yet - I need to find Elain first, she might want them elsewhere - actually just put everything up on the front patio - just off to the side by that decorative pot plant, I don't need guests commenting on the mess, but I really do need to see where these supplies should be going.” Alis stuck the pencil in her hair and pulled her purple felt bag close to her chest.
“When you have unloaded the carriage then please take it around to the stables and water the horses Thackery.” She quickly looked around, double checking her list inside her head, “Oh and wake up the coachman before coming back from the stables - I still need you both today, you will get to have fun on your own time this evening.”
Alis may have been small but she knew how to command an army of people and her boys would be no different. She walked up the steps to the main doors, quickly turning her back to the fountain, memories flooding her of a body strung up for all to see. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and put on a smile.
Knock, Knock
Alis pulled on the door knocker several times.
Waited.
No one came.
“Helloooo” she called out in a sing-song voice hoping that someone would hear her.
She opened the overly large door and looked inside. The house wasn’t completely quiet but it felt like it was holding its breath keeping a secret and that wasn’t what she expected at all.
*
Alis gently made her way inside, calling out as she went down the hall. She looked up the stairs and couldn't see any lights on. The hustling of servants in her memories was nowhere to be found today. Very unusual - but things had probably changed for the better since she was last in this house.
“Elain?” She called softly. “Feyre?”
No one appeared before her. No doors banged or hurried footsteps coming to meet her from further off in the House.
Crossing the black and white chequered floor she turned into the dining room. With it being close to the main doors, if someone was to come at least they would find her. Laid out before her was a feast of Epic proportions. Elain must be a masterful chef, this was amazing and it was only the start of the day - imagine what treats she would have for the rest of Calanmai. She took a fresh breath, glad to have been worried about nothing. Walking around the table Alis could see that everything looked like it was suspended in time - glistening vegetables, sweet treats and exotic spices and something… not quite right.
Alis continued to examine the delicacies until she heard her boys laughing loudly through the patio doors.
She rushed over to them, opened them wide and stormed along the patio - it was too early and the Manor too quiet for them to be so loud and they should know it!
“Boys!” She chided, “What are you two laughing about! Nothing can be that funny!”
Tarrant snickered and Thackery hit his brother in the chest causing him to buckle over in pain.
“Well? What is it then?” Alis asked.
Tarrant’s eyes were watering and he was trying his best to hold in his laughter but Alis could see he wasn’t going to be able to for much longer.
“Thackery?” she pleaded, her eyes displaying her confusion at their display.
“Well, Alis, um…” he looked down and then back to Alis and she could tell he was avoiding her gaze. “You see… it's something we saw…or something we think we saw.”
“Go on… I don’t have all day.”
“Well, this thing we saw… it was running.”
“Okay, I still don’t see the joke.”
“It was large.”
Tarrant hit his brother on the back, tears running down his face.
“Alis it was a naked man running… through the gardens…like a full naked human.”
Alis’s eyes went wide as she tried to put the puzzle pieces together.
“But human’s shouldn’t be at Calanmai” she said, nibbling on her ring in thought.
“Alis…. don’t you think it's funny?” Tarrant laughed, pleading with her to agree.
Thackery also grinned now, deep brown eyes lighting up his entire face, unable to hide his amusement as Alis thought about who it could be.
“No, you boys must be mistaken, no one in their right mind would be running around here naked - especially not on Calanmai.” she said in a very matter of fact tone.
Tarrant wiped his eyes on his brother's shirt and Thackery elbowed him before saying, “Well what did we see then?”
Alis tried her hardest to figure it out and came up with the only real conclusion - “well, someone must be experimenting with glamors in the garden, maybe it's part of the entertainment for tonight.”
Warm brown and steel-blue eyes widened now.
“Wait, we thought this was just a massive party where we meet some nice Fae - what are we in for tonight? Because I have to tell you, watching small humans run around with erect cocks isn't really going to get me in the mood.” Thackeray said matter of factly.
Tarrant sat down on the ledge, his brother’s words kicking off his laughter again.
“Stop it Tarrant!” Alis said, hitting him with her handbag.
“Do we get to see real people? Or just illusions?” Tarrant managed to get out between breaths trying to recover, “You’d think they would make better ones, Why not a sea goddess or some heavenly figure to cater to my every whim?”
“Stop this utter nonsense right now! Bring in those gift boxes, they can go next to the dining room table and the seafood can go straight into the coldstore in the kitchen afterwards.”
“Did you find Elain?” Thackery asked, most of the laughter gone now but still a twinkle of mischief in his eye. Always the sensible brother, at least she knew he would look out for Tarrant. He better not go looking for goddesses in the night.
“No, not yet. But we need to get things underway, I’m meeting the twins soon and running out of time.”
He nodded and grabbed a box, inclining at his brother to do the same before Alis managed to find harder things to hit them with.
*
The mess across the Patio would not do. It looked like a tea party had occurred instead of a dinner party. Straightening chairs and realigning the table Alis stacked the plates and cutlery that had been left outside - a distinct smell assaulting her senses. She froze. She knew that smell. Red Iris. Her eyes widened and she unstacked the plates. Examining them quickly to see what was making the smell.
“BOYS!” She shouted into the kitchen, “Boys, I need you here. Now!”
Panic rushed over Alis, she knew that smell, she knew what that “spice” could do and had healed many fae who had gotten carried away over the years.
The boys emerged, large smiles on their faces.
“Yes Alis?” Tarrant asked.
He was a picture of calm from the neck up, a smug smile gently tugging at his eyes.
“Have you boys noticed…. Anything else strange today?”
“Anything else?”
“Anything else other than a strange man in the gardens?”
The brothers started laughing again.
“Oh for Cauldron’s sake! Have you?”
Tarrant’s eyes were glittering again, he could not control his mirth. Thackery on the other hand had taken the role of the calm older brother.
“Well, we did just see something odd in the kitchen.”
“The Kitchen?” Alis mentally ran through all of the potential things they could have seen as she remained speechless, scared for the worst.
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure there is clothing in the kitchen - strange place to store clothing if you ask me,” he deadpanned.
Tarrant went inside and poured himself a glass of water from the dining table and Alis followed and instinctively grabbed it. Sniffing it before passing it back to him. He raised his eyebrow, took a sniff himself and said, “What are you trying to smell Auntie A?” before taking a sip.
“I think the inhabitants of the Manor have taken Red Iris and that the naked man you saw might be real.” She exhaled audibly and grabbed a glass of her own and took a large drink.
“So wait, You’re telling us - that there are potentially more naked people around the Manor?” Thackery asked.
Tarrant spit out his drink, “No Way! I thought that stuff didn't happen until tonight!”
“It doesn’t, well not in this manner anyway, we need to see if everyone is ok - I don’t know if they knew they were taking it… I think it was made into something.” Alis held up one of the plates she was still holding for them to inspect and they both pulled their heads back from the sickly sweet smell.
“I always hated the smell of irises,” Thackery said.
“Well if it causes spontaneous nudity it seems like a risky drug,” Tarrant countered.
“Yes, well,” Alis coughed, hoping she could spare them from the details. “Can you please search the Manor grounds and see if anyone needs our help - in fact you might need blankets if your last encounter is anything to go by.”
“Wait, wait, wait. Just wait one second. Why do we have to go round up the naked human?” Tarrant said.
“Would you rather I did?” Alis responded.
The boys both grumbled and asked where the blankets were kept before heading outside.
*
Alis opened the bar cabinet next to the windows and pulled out one of the crystal glasses. Then she pulled out an equally beautiful decanter of amber liquid. Slowly she measured out a large glass and downed it in one. She was going to need it. She refilled her glass.
She knew she had to check the kitchen first.
“Hello” she called out as she stepped inside. There were no sounds, but on the floor were the various discarded pieces of clothing that the boys had mentioned.
“Is anyone here?”
The kitchen was a large space made up of one large room and several smaller rooms for different food items. A Larder, a cold store, a pantry, and storage rooms for pots and pans and anything else that might be needed. No one appeared to be in the main space, the kitchen was clear - time for another sip.
Upon returning the glass to her side she saw a long slender arm wave daintily from the pantry.
“Hello there?” she called out again, “Who is in the pantry?”
There was some rustling coming from behind the door - the arm vanished and a quiet “What time is it?” Came through the thin barrier.
“Is that you, Elain, dear?”
“Please, not so loud - um, yes - it's me.”
“Do you need a hand?” Alis took another swig or her drink hoping that she wasn’t going to need a hand at all - she wasn’t in the mood for Red Iris shenanigans.
“No! I… “
Alis waited patiently as Elain tried to pull together her thoughts.
“I seem to have fallen asleep in here… without my clothes, would you please be able to find me something? I’d rather not wear a potato sack.”
Alis picked up every item she could find around the kitchen, unsure if it was everything she needed - some clothing items were definitely made to fit the male form.
“Here dear,” she said through the door “I’ll leave these here and go look for something else in the bedrooms for you to wear.”
There was a distinctly male cough from the pantry and whispering. Alis took another swig. Waiting.
“Alis, could you please remove the pie from the Kitchen - it appears to have been... compromised, and we wouldn’t want anyone else to eat it today. I’ll be out in a wee while once i’m more presentable”
“Yes my lady, of course”
Alis quickly moved away from the door, scanning the kitchen looking for a pie that was most definitely not there. Only one small plate sat on the counter with the distinct smell. She left the kitchen and sat down on a dining chair before her. Kicking her legs out from her dress trying to think it all through.
Yes the pie was gone - there was no remaining pie in the kitchen to see. And someone had been eating Red Iris out on the patio. Alis wondered how many others had been “compromised” last night.
“Oh let the Mother save us from people eating pie,” she breathed before getting up to go find Elain some clothes.
*
Ladies in waiting walked down the hall towards Alis and she decided it was best to send them in the opposite direction; asking them to gather berries, or wood or things for the festival outside.
“Ladies Ladies, No need to freshen up the rooms this morning, It's Calanmai! We shall all be spending an evening under the stars!” she shouted in an overly cheery voice down the halls, arms extended, swaggering confidence - so unlike herself. Perhaps her whisky had gotten to her, she wasn’t afraid of being quiet any longer. With the house filling up with people her voice had become almost booming - shouting at people to go in different directions. A little courage from alcohol never hurt anyone. She passed a table in the hall and found a discarded plate. Quickly picking it up, she could see that the cherry pie looked delicious but one sniff told her that this was the culprit containing Red Iris Powder. At least only a few bites had been taken out of this slice but she wasn’t sure how long ago that was.
The hallway filled with shadows around her as Nuala and Ceridwen arrived, watching her examining the pie.
“Do you require anything?” the first said,
Alis turned around to face them holding the plate.
“We can’t seem to find Elain where she said she would be,” said the other.
Alis felt the bark on her arms and face turn a redder shade of brown.
“Um actually, I have a delicate mission for you both.” she said
“We thought you might have” they looked at eachother with knowing smiles then glanced at the pie in her hand.
“Could you please find Elain some nice clothes to wear, and perhaps some for Lucien as well and just…. Leave them in the kitchen?”
“Leave them in the kitchen?” said the first.
“Yes.” she had the last of her drink.
“Both sets?” said the second.
“Yes.” Alis said.
“Very well. Did you still want us to help with the baking?” asked the first.
“I’d hold off on that for a wee while, perhaps you could see if anyone else might be, um… requiring… clothes. Then head back to the kitchen?”
The first twin smiled and the second said, “We will see what we can do.” and they vanished into the shadows the same way they had come. Alis abandoned her glass on the table and quickly put the pie in her bag, accepting that it would be ruined and she would need a new one but it was easier than letting someone else consume the pie or Cauldron forbid seeing her with it on Calanmai and think she wanted to roll among the wildflowers!
The hustle and bustle of the Manor was reaching peak levels. Still, Alis had not seen Feyre. She had wandered the halls and found some plates but she couldn’t tell if they were the infamous pie plates or something else. After checking all the public rooms in the house, she finally made her way outside again. Stepping out onto the patio that connected to the dining room she returned to the first crime scene. A pie plate sat on the table, empty with the dish scraped clean and forks beside. She moved her stack of plates and grabbed the dish to put in her bag just as the boys came around the corner.
“So we found some clothes” said Thackery
“But not the butt-naked human” grinned Tarrant
“Or anyone else.”
“Yeah, the one who owns the blue dress, I bet she’s stunning. Definitely wouldn’t have minded helping her - ”
Thackery gave his brother a look that said - now is really not the time.
“And it appears that there was only one place outside that had clothes so maybe it wasn’t as widespread as you thought?” Thackery said. “We searched all the gardens close to the House as well as the stables.”
She could see he was trying to make her feel better, he hadn’t known that she had already had two rather large glasses of whisky to dull the rising panic.
He really was a good boy.
“I found the dish - so someone either ate A LOT of pie… or we have other people out there... recovering. hic” Alis sat down in a wicker chair on the patio.
“We will take these to the laundry and let their owners find them there. You alright Alis?” Thackery said.
“Yes dear, perfectly fine - just sitting down for a moment.” Alis removed her shall placing it on the ground next to her.
“Okay, we'll sort this out and be back soon.” Thackery consoled her.
“Yeah, It's fine Auntie - A funny story to tell at the next Summer Barge party.” Tarrant continued to smile at her.
Alis threw her face into her hands and pulled her knees up under her chin.
“Well, as long as you two have a good story out of it.”
The boys walked back inside the house, talking and laughing, leaving Alis alone with her thoughts. Well, she guessed it wasn’t Calanmai without a little raunchiness. The climbing roses fell over the railing, mingling with the wisteria - pinks, whites and purples cascading down, drawing Alis’s attention to the clothes on the ground under the table. Which in turn made her notice the shoes kicked off and left behind. She really really hoped there weren't naked people watching her.
“Hello?” she called out carefully.
Listening to the hums of insects and the trill of birdsong she focused to see if there was breathing nearby. Only the sound of the wind in the trees greeted her - no one graced this patio or anywhere near it apart from herself.
Standing slowly, arm pushing out her creaking back, she stretched before collecting all the belongings and putting them next to the chair, where she found some well worn panties.
How hadn’t she noticed the scent of sex all over her favourite chair!
Fuck it!
She sat down again and tucked her legs under her - pulling out her smelling salts from her bag to calm her rising anger. She would wait for someone to find her if they wanted her - she wasn't subjecting herself to the chaos of the Spring Manor if she didn’t have to. The sun stretched over the Patio, warming the stone beneath her - Alis loved the heat and the hot humid air was buzzing with insects and smelt like salt and sweet flowers. The petrichor and dew from this morning had well and truly dissipated leaving only a muggy heat and pollen in the air.
“Do you have any use for us?”
Alis jumped from her seat, “Please. Do not do that again!”
“Do what?” The second wraith replied innocently enough but Alis had been around long enough to know that she knew exactly what she was doing.
“Did you help Elain in the kitchen?” Alis asked.
“Oh, Elain was… occupied” the first twin said.
The second twin held up her fingers to inspect them, a wispy shadow curling around her hands trying to hide from the bright sun.
Alis muttered to herself - surely the Red Iris powder would have worn off by now. The twins just stood there waiting for Alis to ask more questions, like they wanted her to ask for more details.
“No, I don’t want to know. If Elain doesn’t need you in the kitchen then that's fine.” Alis had lost all her patience with people bonking whenever they felt like it. Did they not know it was Calanmai? Preparations needed to be made!
“But we do have to start thinking about the feast for tonight,” she ran her hands through her hair, some of her blossoms falling to the ground. “That kitchen is the biggest around, why couldn’t they go somewhere else?” an exasperated Alis shouted. “We have a feast to organise for cauldrons sake!”
The second twin grinned and her brilliant teeth glinted with glee, “Oh someone is definitely having a feast.”
“Out!” Alis pointed her finger towards the gardens and the shadow twins faded away laughing as they went.
Alis on the other hand was at the end of her tether, she was about to go give Elain a piece of her mind when she turned and saw Feyre. A very tired looking Feyre. All her anger dissipated as she saw in front of her another Victim of the Red Iris Powder.
“Hello Feyre.”
“Good Morning Alis.”
Alis couldn’t help but Judge the High lady of the night court, she held her tongue back from asking if she would like help with her hair. One part of her appearance that needed remedying quickly. It looked like a bird's nest but Alis was too polite to say. Not to mention the smell of sex that came off her everytime she moved. Did they forget all Fae had heightened senses? Nevermind the sexcapade - at least have a bath before meeting company.
“I came to see how things were going for the Calanmai celebrations.” Feyre said quietly.
“Well, as well as they can be. Why don’t you freshen up and then we will venture down to the kitchens to start preparations for the feast. No need to rush, it appears as if they are currently occupied.” Alis fell right back into her old role with Feyre, a lady in waiting offering advice. She was now a friend but still liked to keep things in order. Feyre nodded and went back upstairs, “I’ll bring you a cup of tea when I’m ready.”
The boys walked past Feyre and straight to Alis, “We might go to the old cottage, this place is a madhouse today. Will we see you there before the bonfire?”
“No, I think I will help here and then retire for the evening - no Bonfire for me tonight, the smells will give me a headache I'm sure.
“Do you want us to stay for a bit?” Thackery asked
“No no, I'm just waiting for someone - both of you - go! Enjoy tonight! Be good men.” Alis said, kissing each of them on the cheek. “Love you both, be good, have fun, if you have sex please for the love of the mother have a damn bath before coming home.”
Both boys started laughing out loud, “Yeah - don't worry, I definitely will be having a bath tonight. Even if I don't do anything there's such funk in the air that I'm sure I'll have to in order to feel clean.” Thackery said.
“I’ll just jump in a lake and it will be fine.” Tarrant added.
“Please use soap” Thackery tacked on.
“Love you both,” Alis said affectionately as they walked down into the gardens towards their old cottage. Alis found her seat again and collapsed into it. Taking a deep breath she calmed herself and pulled her bag up to her - grabbing the little notebook. The pen had long been lost on her wandering travels around the manor but she still needed to see what she managed to accomplish. Sadly the pie she had shoved in there had ruined the cover, covered in splotchy red marks but she could still read the list inside.
Number 1: Arrive at the spring court. Well she had definitely done that.
Number 2: Have the boys unload the carriage. Yes done.
Number 3: Find Elain and Feyre to confirm the plan for the evening…. Well…. That one took a lot longer than expected, but she had a plan - as soon as she was able they would begin the feast preparations.
Number 4: Give gifts from Tarquin. Well they are in the house. They might not have actually been given to Elain and Feyre but they were ready for tonight. What did it matter? She mentally ticked that off as being good enough.
Number 5: Help Nuala and Cerridwen in the kitchen with some spring treats. Alis really wished that she had her pen because she would cross that one out and write - never arrange for their help again. She made a mental note to remember and ran her sharpened nail under each name leaving a brown bark trail.
Number 6: Ensure all the bonfires are set up. Fuck someone else can do that, she should have gotten the boys to check before they left - but their evenings deserved to be their own.
Number 7: Help Elain with the feast festivities. Well that's what she would do as soon as she saw Elain…. Whenever that might be.
She placed the small book back in her bag and tried to relax. If there was pie out in the world still at least it was Calanmai and it wouldn’t be out of place. This was definitely a Calanmai to remember.
Elain can do so much more with her Gardening knowledge. We know that she wanted to visit the continent to see the flowers there, that she can grow almost everything in her garden and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. She can easily learn recipes and people enjoy her food. She is a capable reader and follower of instructions. During her time in the human world she was seen to be intelligent and a worthy match for any lord.
So using these things and inspiration from a picture - I give you Elain the Market Gardener/Researcher/Explorer who is just trying to rebuild the earth one plant at a time.
❀
- After the destruction of the War with Hybern, the lands are still recovering. The people of Prythian are most concerned with food but Elain is slowly finding in her travels that other plants are being destroyed to make crops and feed the people.
- She then Makes it her mission to research and preserve all the plants she can - even the ones people don't love.
- This research and gathering of plants takes her around Prythian, But she quickly learns that she cannot take them all back with her to the Night Court due to climate differences as they don't survive very long there.
- So she she gathers other like minded people and finds ways to set up nurseries and gardens in each Court.
- Her "little research job" quickly expands to managing other people and collaborating with them to learn as much as they can about all the plants - magical or otherwise.
- Lucien introduces her to his friend Nuan, whose knowledge quickly comes in handy.
- Nuan becomes her chief science officer making sure that temperatures are kept even and experimenting with ways to create new climates in other courts allowing cross-breeding between vastly different plants.
- Nuan remains based in Dawn. Close to the Night Court but also surrounded by other like minded tinkering people.
- Nuan and Elain become close friends, working together for the betterment of all of Prythian. They have their own team of people that Source the plants, others that save them, and then ones with knowledge slowly realise that this is a good thing happening.
- It takes time for the sprites and forest dwelling lesser fae to trust the high fae walking through their lands but once they start seeing the high fae saving plants from being destroyed they start to open up and share knowledge.
❀
- Elain still loves to get her fingers dirty, to feel one with the soil, so each garden that she travels to has a small plot of land just for her.
- She plants her favourite varieties in each of these small gardens located around Prythian. She always feels at home in each place as long as she gets to spend time in her garden.
- These small gardens become her home, each a reflection of a different part of herself. She doesn't always invite people to see her gardens and often will have another garden for the public to see.
- The secret gardens allow her to continue her own research without anyone else.
- She has Nuala and Ceridwen often visiting her and while they probably know of the secret gardens they have never asked her about them and Elain likes this about them. They know when she does and doesn't want to talk.
❀
- The Spring Court was the first Court she went to. To help the farmers and the local populace but also to make sure that things grew without growing wild. Spring seemed to grow without any help from her so a taming was needed. A pruning of thorns and roses to let smaller, slower growing plants thrive. She had some of the Inner Circle at her disposal for the exercise and even the Band of Exiles helped her. Vassa's fire powers were helpful in that she could burn invasive plants and the ash could be used to fertilise the fields.
- On her way home she did the royal tour - a slow trip through the safer courts of Summer, Winter, Dawn and Day. They quickly moved through the middle not wanting to stop but Elain made sketches of the vines and night blooming flowers from the carriage.
- In each court she realised how many things she had yet to explore and discover. The beauty that was present in every place and how abundant life was.
- The first thing she realised was that her knowledge was lacking. Each court was a whole new place and experience.
- When she arrived in the Day court instead of heading to the hanging gardens by the river she quickly moved into the library with her sister. Nesta left her alone in the halls filled with botany books and went in search of her own book choices.
- The research was just the start but she was determined to use her new found purpose to help the people of prythian in the way she best knew how.
❀
- Over time this developed into greenhouses - plants for sale and user guides for how to take care of them.
- Elain becomes a household name, knowing how to grow anything and everything and. She receives fan mail - Her fans write to her to ask "how do I stop plant X from dying?", if she doesn't know then her team jumps into action and she learns it.
- They develop quarterly publications that talk about the best plants to grow in the court and season and tips for making more exotic plants grow in new climates. Elain loves collecting flowers for Feyre to paint and placing her art on the cover.
- Helion and Rhysand spent time developing a printing press for mass production, and while it is still a minority of Fae that will read the pamphlet, reading it being brought to the masses through Gardening.
- Her teams under Nuan have found medicinal properties for plants and the Dawn court now grows most of the medicinal plants making them more accessible.
- Elain found a sapling for an Ash tree on an excursion, and while she knows this can easily kill Fae she had to preserve the species. So in the middle there is a secret grove known only to her, where ash trees grow.
Elain, mourn as she might for the life she would have had with Graysen, had found a place, a role here. Tending to the gardens of Feyre’s veritable palace on the river, helping other residents of Velaris restore their own destroyed gardens—she had purpose, and joy, and friends: those two half-wraiths who worked in Rhysand’s household.
It’s already canon that she does this. That she is rebuilding in the way she best knows how. That she is empathetic and helping others in the community.
Calling all ACOTAR writers! If you like writing smut and you want to work on a bit of a kinky project for Kinktober, then this is for you!
The Plan: All writers involved will write a smutty one shot that connects to a collection of others. Once the writers and their couples have been decided, I will further explain the plot and assign an order. Then, we will all write our scenes, with some collaboration so the story makes sense, and post everything some time during Kinktober.
The Plot: Elain and Lucien will be in the Spring Court helping things get back to normal, which means they have to lead Calanmai. On the eve of Calanmai, they decide to host a dinner for their friends to celebrate the event without making everyone attend Calanmai. Helion and Lady A are unable to attend, but they send a special gift for Elain and Lucien. A cherry pie, with a note attached.
Unknown to them, the pie was intended only to be eaten the next day for Calanmai. Why? Because it is laced with a special aphrodisiac that takes 30 minutes to set in, and then lasts all night. With time ticking until the guests arrive for dinner, chaos ensues.
The Words: Each scene for each couple should be somewhere between 4,000 to 7,000 words, or close to it. This will keep things consistent for everyone involved. Additionally, certain details will need to be shared with other writers to ensure there is no overlap.
The Couples:Â These are some of the couples I think might be fun to include, but I am open to other ideas.
Elain x Lucien: Claimed by @bookofmirthÂ
Nesta x Cassian: Claimed by @duskandstarlight
Feyre x Rhysand: Claimed by @hlizr50
Mor x Emerie
Gwyn x Azriel: Claimed by @tealnymph24
Vassa x Jurian: Claimed by @seperatist-apologist
Kallias x Viviane
Others pairings that I haven’t listed, including Character x OC pairings, are also welcome. The max is probably around 8 couples though, depending on what couples they are.
To volunteer for a couple, comment below or DM me with the couple you want to write.Â
The Writers: This is open to any ACOTAR writers. The expectations are just that you are willing to collaborate with others, it has to be smutty (it is for kinktober) and you have to be able to hit close to the minimum word count. I want them to be semi consistent, so collaboration is really important. I can be flexible though, so please reach out with any concerns.
If you have any questions, just let me know! I will keep this open until I have gathered enough writers. If there is a certain couple you want, but you want more details first, just let me know and I we can chat about it.
If you are worried about the word count, reach out to me and we can talk about it. I am flexible!
If you want to do a pairing that I haven’t listed, reach out to me and we can talk about it. There are so many great characters out there, so I am totally open to other cool duos, or, heck, even trios if that’s what you’re into!
if you have any other concerns or questions, reach out to me and we can talk about it. I just want this to be a fun, collaborative and positive event!
So if you have a question about a fic that I stopped or wrote. Like you want to know where it’s going? We’re curious about the plan or just had a question.

She couldn’t help herself. He started it. She had won. He had hugged her for a long time until he thought she had fallen asleep and he then left the room. Perhaps to cool down, perhaps to just use the bathroom - it didn’t really matter. The satisfaction she had of winning the bed was so sweet she almost wished she did sleep with him - a nice reward.Â
She rolled over in the massive bed, the sheets and her nightgown all offering this sensational feeling of luxury.Â
Her whole body felt like it was on fire - nerve endings reacting to everything she touched. Was it the bed? Or being in it with him, his smell lingering on the sheets.Â

Nesta
Silver whorls and patterns decorated the imposing metal doors in front of them, dominating the corridor that had led them here. Cassian turned the keys; opening the suite he had procured earlier. Leading the way he placed their purchases and bags on a hall table nearby.Â
Looking around Nesta quickly made note of where everything was, turning in a clockwise direction. She could see it had an open plan kitchen with a glittering island bench with stools underneath and next to the kitchen cabinetry was a nondescript door to another room.Â
Her gaze continued to assess her surroundings - just like the house of wind a massive window was carved out of the rock and the balcony overlooked the conifers below. The lounge space was laid out in front of the windows to face the view. This place - while not large - could be used for entertaining, the sofas were big enough to seat several warrior sized illyrians and if need be - slept on. Off to the other side of the room was a single door, open and leading into a bathroom. Having full scope of the room she could tell that the simple door next to the kitchen must be the bedroom. One bedroom.Â

Nesta
The Market was beautiful, she couldn’t deny it, they had been wandering for over an hour through the carved rooms, the fae lights inside the cavern were emitting a soft glow even on the paths people weren’t using. Heat and flickering light also escaped from the various metal lanterns shining on the stalls. The silver, gold, and copper shapes lined the way: crescent moons, stars and other symbols from the night court etched into the metal. Smoky fragrances seeped from the cut-outs enticing shoppers closer to look at the trinkets, jewels and other night-court goods.
Nesta wondered if the Fae around her had other ways of capturing the attention of their shoppers, spells or tricks, there was a large group clustered around one stall but Nesta couldn’t see what was pulling them towards it - other than nosey people trying to see why there was a crowd in the first place.
After passing through the many halls of unique clothes, and jewels they had eventually reached the booksellers section. Walking into one, they talked about the exits and Cassian had made sure that the proprietor of the store kept an eye out; handing it a small bag before leaving. She was grateful that he had taken her concerns seriously and it was partly why she was feeling so safe and in control. Â Cassian had left her alone, reading through a few books while he rushed off to complete what he needed to.
Nesta browsed the bookshelves, her fingers gliding over the worn covers. Broken spines and folded corners proving these books had been well read, and much loved favourites. In languages she couldn’t read as well as a few in the common tongue she was used to. Finding three promising reads she left them with the large eyed creature near the front. Its claws clicked together as they moved over the covers, appraising what was chosen and softly placing them on the counter. Nesta inclined her head in thanks and decided to let her gift lead her towards her next find.

The walk around the lake felt more peaceful than Nesta thought possible, fireflies flew through whistling reeds and up around the various fae and night court creatures. Twinkling in the night, drawing Nesta’s attention to the many delicacies laid out on blankets in the tree lined space before the clearing. Beautiful faeries of all types clustered around the blankets, or at least what looked like blankets - the one closest was made of frosted silver leaves and yellow flowers, noticeably different from the surrounding greenery and moss.
Nesta continued to assess, taking in all around her.

Nesta
Gloved fingers held her book open as she wandered down the gravel path, trees casting dappled shadows on her pages and the birds swooping down low to get a better look at what she was reading.
“You are worse than Cassian” she called back to the birds who continued to stalk her.
She knew they weren’t birds, but she hadn’t asked anyone what sort of Fae they were or if she should be wary. It was easier to ignore her surroundings than understand the constant danger she was in, walking from one end of WindHaven to the other. She also liked to think of them as friends, just trying to see what she was up to.
… and he stretched out an arm, grasping for her as she…
A larger shadow passed overhead and Nesta looked up. Nothing caught her attention but she closed her book nonetheless. The bird-featured creatures continued to twitter in the trees and she knew that whatever cast the shadow either hadn’t spotted her or was harmless since it had not sent her feathered friends into hiding.
“Hey.” Cassian called from the trees ahead.
“Hi” Nesta replied.
In the last few days she had been avoiding him when she could. She wasn’t sure how to move on from their moment and now he was here, just waiting on the path, just saying “Hey” like it was no big deal. Like she hadn’t been sent into a whirlwind of confusion.
fic update: soo, im learning i’d rather write/edit than format posts for tumblr. so atm im posting to AO3 directly. ill post to tumblr eventually for consistency but atm that’s where you will find updates on waiting in the freezing dark.Â
I absolutely adored that headcanon, thanks for answering it! Is there any chance there could be a second part, though it's alright if you can't. And she's not possessed by Maeve, she is a Fae reincarnation of her after her parents and some other loyalists did like a blood magic ritual and shit, though she's completely unaware that she's the Valg/Fae Queen
Hahahaha I’m not sure. I’ll see how I go, just because I felt like I gave you the laziest thing and feel so guilty for that.
Also I love that idea of the accidental bad blood ritual.
So In my head I kinda took it like, she’s what Maeve would be if she just grew up as a girl from xandria, kinda like Arachne in Greek myth having this incredible skill with weaving and then was trained by the spiders because of it so she knows she’s not exactly normal but not why.
She also worked with those little cultists whose name I forget and basically learns how to use her magic with the skills they taught her. The spiders were suspiscious but just fostered her dark powers on the sly, making it seem normal. And then she went back to xandria to share her skills with her fam and help to make them wealthy and recognised.
Maybe the blood thing could be some secret, there is that oasis of barg and the ruins down there it could easily be where something went wrong. The parents tried to save her from a bad periphery or something and ended up creating it in the process.
Ok so I might come back and write some more for you. Hahaha. But maybe more like this. I get stuck on the details sometimes.
Don't know if you're still doing headcanon requests, but I had this idea for like a reincarnated Maeve (with no memory of her former life) and a Rowaelin son or daughter falling in love? *hides* Sorry if it's weird or something
hmmm I can try. So reincarnated maeve like valg possession, never quite gone, a dark sinister thing inhabiting a body or like a new person with maeve’s powers? i’ll see how I go….
sooo. let me try to get in this headspace….. a really short way they meet. it’s a love at first sight kinda thing.

Waiting in the Freezing Dark - My Nessian Fan Fic Series.
I finally thought of a name for my Fic series - a Little Late but hopefully you will forgive me - and I will use the tag #waitinginthefreezingdark for all chapters now, so it will be easier to find. I will also publish all chapters to @rayonfrozenwings-fic and update this Masterlist.Â

Also Please be aware that this fic series will have some heartbreaking moments, I will try to have warnings at the start of the chapter if I think there are triggering topics. I really want to follow Nesta and Cassian’s relationship but there is a lot of backstory that needs to happen for these two to be together in my mind. Again - it is how I see their relationship.Â
This started as a one–shot (which might be hard to believe now) so I don’t write to a schedule. If you would like to be tagged, either comment or send me an ask/message and I can add you to my list so you are notified when I have published a new chapter.

“I’m telling you, Naragona is an asshole, he won’t listen to me. Not even threats work, and I don’t have time for his nonsense. Send a contingent to keep him in line and reward them.”
