I’m not a Republican, nor am I a redneck. I’m not racist, nor does my family have a huge Confederate flag on the back of all of our vehicles. I don’t hunt, wear camouflage jackets, or watch Nascar.
Not everyone in the South fits that description.
Despite the stereotypes and ridicule deriving from that stereotype, I am, and always will be, extremely proud to be from the South.
I’m proud of my grandparents, who grew up barefoot in the mountains and were taught to appreciate every little thing they had. My grandfather had 14 brothers and sisters, and he learned a lot about values, love, and family. I’m proud to say that I am the granddaughter of real hillbillies, not the detestable Hollywood version of some stupid product of incest.
The South I love is the cold mountains of Virginia, the beaches of South Carolina, the softness of Gone With the Wind Georgia. The fried chicken, mashed potatoes, ham, biscuits, cornbread, and green beans I’ve taken a great pleasure in eating my whole life. The classic country music I was brought up on, like Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash. The kind, gentle and strong generations of families who were brought up on this land and love it with their heart and soul.
I love the history, the stories, the music, the food, and the beauty.
That’s my South. ♥
