The troubling message behind Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death, which we all feel without articulating, is that it was unnecessary and we know that something could be done. We also know what that something is and yet, for some traditional, prejudicial, stupid reason we don’t do it.

Christmas with the Year of The Mice
There was a young woman who had been collecting ornaments all of her life
From her very first Christmas until just last night!
Some were handmade by family members so dear,
And some had been bought by her mother with cheer.
Some she had gathered all on her own, when she had grown up and had her very own home.
There once was a Christmas when she was still a child,
That mice had found her family's Christmas treasures, they had been ravaged, the mice had gone wild.
They tearfully threw the ruined treasures away,
Then went into town, bought new ones, and saved the day.
The girl had a stocking that she hung every year with care.
She had had it all of her life, since before she had hair!
The young girl thought it was lost the year of the mice.
She cried and she cried, but then she thought twice.
She remembered that Christmas was about more than and old stocking.
She wiped her eyes and knew that Christmas was still rocking!
She had her family and friends and so much Christmas cheer.
She looked up above and gave thanks for each year.
The End

Ten Things I Know to Be True: 1. I have tried to die more times than I’d like to admit. 2. I think there is a reason why I keep failing. (I really hope there is a reason why I keep failing.) 3. I think maybe it’s not because I’m bad at dying, but because I’m really good at surviving. 4. Opening my veins did nothing to let the sadness out of me. 5. Being physically empty did not make me feel any less emotionally empty. 6. Deciding to get better was the hardest decision I’ve ever made. 7. Deciding to get sick again was the easiest. 8. I am not a soldier in this illness. I do not have to die for my cause. 9. I have shaky hands and weak knees, but that does not mean I am not strong. 10. I am not worthless.
