Hideo Shiraki | Hideo Shiraki Plays Horace Silver
Hideo Shiraki was a jazz hard-bop drummer from the 1950s and 1960s who was one of the big stars of Japanese jazz at that time. For this album, he assembled a sextet to play music written by Horace Silver, who’s right there on the cover art (although he’s not on this album). If I had an initial complaint about this album, it’s that the arrangements Shiraki uses are basically the exact same as Silver’s original recordings, with the same tempos and keys and everything. However, Shiraki’s band brings their own energy and creativity to these tunes that keeps this from just being a rehash. I do think this album would have been better with original arrangements, but I think it’s pretty solid as it is.
