san francisco, a sanctuary for technology in the american landscape, & ground zero for the birth of america’s omnics .  The golden city was hit hard by the omnic crisis, being a key strategic holding point for the omnics where they could commandeer silicon valley’s research into AI and further improve themselves .  Ever since the crisis ended however, the state of omnic relations in the bay had fallen to an all time low .

marcus holloway was raised in the aftermath of war, seeing the robotic citizens being downtrodden on by everyone around them .  having an interest in computers & coding, marcus developed an empathy for the artificial life, intrigued by their existence, he worked tirelessly in his late teens attending local protests & walkouts on their behalf .  being an advocate for human-omnic equality in sf, marcus was profiled as a potential threat by the authorities & arrested on a trumped up charges to silence him .

his lawyer managed to lose the jail time on his charge, instead opting for community service for the young man; where he worked in community outreach teaching kids how to program .  he enjoyed his time teaching, but by the time he had completed his time, he was 23, and more ready than ever to commit himself to the cause .  he worked his way into the hacktivist group dedsec, where he could make full use of his computer skills to enact change, and dedicated his work within the group to organising operations to expose corrupt corperations & politicians who used their power to oppress the people of the city he loved.

dedsec works in direct opposition of talon, leaking their information to the recently recalled overwatch despite their outlawed status.  the two groups often work in tandem, and the offer for dedsec to be absorbed into the new overwatch has been made; but for now the group chooses to remain independent.
