auden was a vampire, it already meant that his skin was paler than normal but she could have sworn that she saw his go a shade whiter, his dark hair contrasting against his skin. a contrast she had once found attractive, maybe a small part of her did. she watched as the flames sputtered in place nearest to his arm. she let the flame stay here for a moment, let it lick over the surface it had clung to. she was sure it would have a burned mark on it and she didn’t care who was upset about it. she tilted her head at his attempt at what sounded like the beginning of small talk. “could use a little storm. the skies all dark and cloudy, maybe a little lightning too.” she shrugged in response, surely he remembered her greater affinity for lightning than fire, and her fire was potent but her lightning was worse. his eyes are avoiding her, looking down at the ground, looking in every other direction but not toward her, not up to her face or even higher than her feet. it makes her huff out an annoyed chuckle that is more of just a sound of air coming from her nose. a hole stirs in her heart when she hears her mother tongue from his lips, she doesn’t speak irish gaelic much anymore, but she’s never forgotten the language. “cén fáth go dtiocfadh leat nuair a d'fhág tú san oíche cosúil le géar?” her fingers curl, flames forming in her hand and she lobes it his feet, forcing him to look p at her.
he’s loved her for five centuries — she might not believe it, but he has — and so her casual tone doesn’t fool him. “southern california is always in need of rain.” despite his seemingly acquiescent words, auden’s lips twisted into a small frown. handfuls of fire are certainly impressive and deadly, but aveline’s skills with lightning are in an entirely different class. she could set him aflame where he stands and yet he remains unscathed by even the smallest wisps of fire. surely there’s a reason? he instinctively stumbled backward as flames burned through the carpet, danced precariously over the fronts of his shoes. “agus an bhfuil tú ag teacht anseo ag cuardach míniú? nó an bhfuil sé ina bhfeiceann tú?” one more step backward and he’d land on the coffee table, probably break it into pieces and spill his glass of blood all over the floor. he shuffled forward in order to avoid such a disaster, this time stopping only a mere foot or two from the warlock. “aveline.” auden murmured her name gently, his dark gaze soft and encouraging. she could threaten lightning and lob fire at him all night. he wouldn’t stop her, but he also doubts it’s the real reason why she’s suddenly appeared on his doorstep. “this city isn’t safe.”
