Highlights of Aoto Watanabe’s My Navi Interview

Mr. Watanabe we heard that you loved Super Sentai series since you were a child. Please tell us about the works that you were particularly enthusiastic about watching.

Starting with Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger (2001), Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger (2002), Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger (2003), and Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (2004), I'm already hooked. I was watching. The last movie, "Dekaranger", left a particularly strong impression on me. It was when I went to Korakuen with my family to see the Dekaranger show (Tokyo Dome City Sky Theater), and in particular, the "actor performance" where all the actors appeared. That's why. When I was little, Super Sentai was already the center of my life, so I recorded broadcasts on videotape and watched them over and over again, and the tapes wore out and I couldn't watch them anymore (laughs). When I think that I will be able to appear in such a Super Sentai series this time, I am really happy.

Please tell us how happy you felt when you were informed that the role of Yanma had been decided.

During the few days from when I was taking the audition to when I was told the results, I used to have dreams of being told I passed! That's why I couldn't believe it when I received a phone call from the office manager. Maybe this isn't a dream either (laughs). I became skeptical and did not immediately rejoice. However, I quickly realized, "This is not a dream. I passed the exam!" It was only when I heard my parents' happy voices that I realized for the first time (laughs). At first, I was just happy, but gradually I felt a sense of responsibility, saying, "I'm really going to be a Sentai hero for the next year."

Have you seen the final episode of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers just the other day?

When I took the audition, I wondered what Super Sentai would be like now, and watched it. Rather than using it as a reference, the stories and characters were genuinely interesting, so I just enjoyed watching them (laughs).

Mr. Watanabe, who loves heroes, how did you feel when you learned about Yanma's personality?

I honestly thought that Yanma was cool. The person named Yanma has a coolness that makes me think that I want to reach it as I grow as a person from now on. Even if he has a hard time, he never tries to show it to others. It's Yanma's way of life that he doesn't want to show off or show himself big, but he doesn't want to expose his weak side. He never tries to be strong, so there are times when he shows a weak side, but it's precisely because he's like that that the people around him want to support him like Shiokara (played by Yuhei Chiwata). There are a lot of very lively characters, including his aides and the people, and there are places where Yanma is supported by everyone. Please also pay attention to how the people of Nkosopa country unite to challenge the evil Bagnarak.

Yanma's hairstyle and clothes are a bit retro, but you can also feel the "cyber" flavor of a technology country.

Yanma likes retro culture, such as classic car miniatures and old music. His clothes are functional, and it's easy to wear sandals (laughs). The hairstyle is not a wig, I actually have my hair colored each time. At first, I had a lot of discussions with director Kamihoriuchi Kazuya about what to do with Yanma's hairstyle, and it was decided on this. I have an image of "Reiwa Regent" and I really like it. At first, the costumes had a completely different impression, but at the discretion of the costume department and the director, it was changed, and it became the current appearance.

In the future, I think there will be more opportunities to try action scenes as the shooting progresses. Will Yanma have a cool action highlight?

I've heard that the skill of the gun is amazing, so I'm hoping that there will be gun action in the future. But Yanma isn't very strong despite being quick to get into a fight, and when he tries to punch, he'll be dodged by his aides (laughs). There is also the "beat" action because he is weak, but I would like to show him the fight action unique to Yanma, a former Yankee, if there is a chance in the future.

What's interesting about Yanma is the many lines that come out of unique vocabulary such as "sukapon raccoon dog" and "octopus menchi." Isn't it difficult to pronounce because it is an unusual word?

Such lines came out during the audition, so I was very careful not to mess it up. It's a struggle, but I'm very happy to have catchy phrases. Mr. Mizuto Takano, the scriptwriter, is thinking about it, but I'm thinking about a few things in my own way so that the number of "Yanma's words" will continue to increase. I will actively come up with ideas and do my best to adapt (laughs).

when you saw Tombo Ohger at the shooting site, you were quite excited, weren't you?

It's already moved me. I was shown pictures in the early days, but the situation where Tombo Ohger was actually in front of me was exceptional. When I wondered if I could become this figure, my childhood memories of watching hero shows came back to me, and I was overwhelmed with emotions that I couldn't express in words.

Y’know i remember seeing this during the OP and saw these things scattered across Yanma’s desk.

I also recall Yanma holding a broken CD or record in the second episode.

I look forward to a focus ep on him where we get to know more of his Yankee side and his love for retro things- and in general his backstory.

I wonder what Neomuna cuisine is like. I mean, I can imagine that some of it is similar to food from Pre-Collapse Earth, but considering Neptune and the mention of agriculture farms, I would be shocked if their cuisine didn't change to match the climate / resources that they have. Like, do they have fruit there? What's the pasta dish situation? What's normal comfort food vs 5 star restaurant style food.

I need to know.

OC/Worldbuilding asks for your inner social science nerd

I wanted to develop a little tool for creating new characters, but instead of the more typical approach, I figured I’d put a slight social science cant on it. Feel free to use if you might find them helpful. 1. How does your OC make ends meet? What do they do for a living? How is their occupation viewed in the social context they’re in? Does it come with social prestige or financial comfort, and are these two things aligned in the society you’re writing, or are they separate metrics? 2. How does your OC communicate? Are they monolingual or multilingual? What is the linguistic environment they’re in? If they’re monolingual, is there a social penalty for only speaking one language, or is it the norm? If they’re multilingual, which of their languages or sociolects has the most/least prestige? Is there a separation between written and oral forms of the language? Can your OC blend in or does their language mark them in some way? What are their levels of fluency, and how do they feel about them? 3. What is your OC’s concept of social debt? What constitutes a sense of social obligation for your character? Is it based on individual feelings or collective principles? What do they do when they feel like they owe someone? Are they likely to default on a social obligation, or repay it? What are the costs of either approach in the society you’re writing? 4. What does it take for your OC to consider someone a friend? What constitutes friendship in the society you’re writing, what expectations does it come with, and how does your OC fit into that structure of expectations? Do they make friends easily or do they struggle? How intimate is a friendship for them, and what does it include?

5. What does it take for your OC to consider someone kin? What constitutes kinship in the society you’re writing, and how does your OC relate to that set of cultural expectations? Is kinship defined only by blood, or through other forms of social intimacy? Are there symbolic gestures that might establish a kin-like relation? What is family for your OC? 6. What are your OC’s religious beliefs? Are they aligned with the beliefs of the society you’re writing, or are they orthogonal? Does your OC question their convictions, or do they feel a degree of certainty? Does your OC feel a personal connection to a sense of divinity, or is religion empty social ritual for them? 7. What does your OC consider unspeakable and/or repugnant? What are the topics or issues your OC finds viscerally difficult or impossible to talk about? Are these topic socially unacceptable, or is it personal? What do they react to with revulsion ahead of any intellectualized response? 8. How does your OC approach the line between public and private? What sorts of things does your OC not share with anyone, what might they share with the people closest to them, and what do they happily share with anyone who might ask? What is their definition of property if they have one? In turn, does your OC think they belong to something as well? (A state, a collective, a cause, a person, etc) 9. What would it take for your OC to change their opinion? Does your OC change their worldview often or are they set in their ways? What does it take for them to change their mind? Do they admit they were wrong, and if so, under what circumstances? How do they handle it? What do they do when their beliefs are threatened? 10. What social persona does your OC perform most frequently, and when do they show other aspects of themselves (and to whom)? Is your OC code-switching between social persona depending on context, or do they stay consistent? Is social adaptation something they feel is necessary or are they uneasy about it? Do they believe that one has to be honest in their self-presentation, and is that aligned with the society you’re writing or is one expected to have multiple social “faces”? Under what circumstances does your OC show a different facet/angle of themselves?
