I have a new friend. He doesn’t make me feel like I’m small or stupid. He’s a friend who makes me feel like I have every right to be me. He tells me that I’m beautiful, without meaning it in a romantic way and he accepts that I won’t believe it but he keeps saying it. He’s the next closest friend I have, apart from R. They have faith that I’m worth caring about. I don’t feel like I’m second best around them, they make me feel like our friendship matters. They make me feel that it isn’t fake, that it isn’t just a time-filler. It’s so easy to talk to them, but I’m still just waiting for the day when they see what everyone else has seen. I’m waiting for the day when they see that I’m not worth it, I know I’m not. F knew I wasn’t, A knew I wasn’t. The same with M, E, K and H. I’m sick of being hurt, but that part of me that feels like him and R won’t hurt me is overpowering. I’m scared to care more about these friendships than I already do.

I think what annoys me most about the ‘Hermione deserves better than Ron’ argument (aside from the obvious and blatant vilification of Ron, of course) is the fact that it completely disregards Hermione’s right to choose.

Hermione chose to start a relationship with Ron. She chose to date him, she chose to marry him, and she chose to have kids with him. She may not have chosen to fall in love with him, but she definitely chose everything that happened after.

By saying ‘she deserves better’ you’re implying that she made the wrong choice. That she doesn’t know what’s best for her. She doesn’t know what she wants. (Alternatively, you could just be saying you don’t really care for her choice, which is- well.) And aside from being just a tad misogynistic, it also takes her character’s agency away.

TL;DR Hermione doesn’t deserve ‘better’ than Ron. You know what Hermione does deserve? She deserves the right to choose. And she chose Ron.

Let’s pretend for a moment that Hermione is a fictional character in a fictional world created by an all-powerful author who makes the actual choices. Now, with that in mind, Hermione did deserve better, because she didn’t choose. Her relationship with Ron was completely forced, and even Rowling herself wanted to kill him off initially because he was an utter tosser who jealously berated Hermione for CHOOSING to hang out and talk and even correspond through letters with Victor Krum. She found a great new friend, and instead of supporting her, Ron did what he always does to his “friends” when they find happiness through someone/something else other than him: he sabotages it and makes his friends feel guilty about their choices (like with Harry being famous and being a Triward champion, etc).

Tl;dr? Ron is a twat, and the romance between him and Hermione was forced and unrealistic.

JK Rowling, the author, wrote Hermione with agency to make her own decisions. Yes, she is a fictional character, but she’s a fictional charcter that was intentionally written to be strong willed, logical, rational, and thoughtful. With this in mind, yes, Hermione did choose Ron, because JK Rowling wrote het to choose Ron. 

As for JK Rowling wanting to kill Ron off, may I direct you to this post here which will clear up your misconceptions for you. 

And as for Ron being an ‘utter tosser who jealously berated… etc. etc.’ I would like to remind you that Ron was an insecure fourteen/fifteen year old when the events you’re talking about occured. Does this mean they were justified? No, not entirely, Ron’s jealousy is a real issue and one of his biggest flaws as a character, stemming from his insecurity. Do these events that happened when Ron was a teenager negate all the good he did for his friends? Does it make his character development in later books void because he was kind of a dick once or twice when he was younger? Hell no. Yes, Ron was jealous, and yes, that jealousy effected his relationship with his friends- but the main point? He learned from it. He grew up. He developed. In later books, we constantly see him sacrificing his own happiness for his friends (actually no, that’s been happening since the first book- chess anyone?) We see him grow as a character, we see him come to terms and address his insecurities rather than let them control him and his actions. All of this makes Ron an amazing character, a strong character, a well-written character, and in no way ‘undeserving’ of Hermione’s love.

(I also like how there is no mention of Hermione’s flaws anywhere in your argument…

TL;DR Ron is an amazing character and I’m sorry if you lack the ability to see that. His relationship with Hermione was in no way forced (I mean, we had, like, 5 books build up so really, if anything, their relationship is the complete opposite of forced.) and may just be one of the most realistic pairings ever.

okay so i know ron goes on to help george out at WWW but i sort of love the idea of him primarily being a stay at home dad, at least before rose and hugo go to hogwarts

and i’m still baffled at wizarding education before age 11 so i imagine that hermione would want her kids to get as much schooling as possible before hogwarts and sends them to muggle schools
