the moment she says let's talk about it trevor wishes he'd stayed silent; words are the exact thing he's lacking. but he likes her suggestions.

"inspiration." what a cliché. completely untouchable. "i might have had only one story in me."

untouchable? not according to diane, who takes his hands — apparently she's forecasting a good day for dispelling, "what halts you is never a dearth of thought. my inference, quite contrarily, is that your many strands of thinking have left you in knots."

something that tickles me about trevdiane (for whom i need to add a tag) is how trevor is the first modest person diane has ever dated. lol. he is maybe the first modest person she has ever met (jk, jk). and she just cannot compute that.

she's not the most modest person herself, of course, apart from moments of self-reflection which she DOES have but they're. scattered/precluded. (reason being that diane's immodesty/self-righteousness is typically a mismanaged defense mechanism to feeling less than - or out-of-place; performative; she's not REMOTELY narcissistic. she Is, however, kinda Vain :P i'll unspool/elucidate that some other time)

but diane encounters trevor and his humility (especially despite his accolades) and she is just like: what?? How Do We Un-Humble You A Hair?

that isn't a bad thing. there's much that is lovely and encouraging and confidence-boosting in that (Classic diane!) but where it comes from is hilarious (Classic diane!)

Did the young woman just proceed to smart him with a whatever? Sebastian is rather unenamoured with this generation and their decided lack of respect. He scoffs, vehement in his opposition.

"The scholar has devoted herself keenly to her beloved books, I see. What a pity it is your imagination fails to stretch beyond the limits dictated to you by the original weavers of language. Are words not intended to be tools, gifted for our own remaking? Should we not commend my creativity?" He plants his drink down on the counter. "I have no interest in yielding to your censorship."

"if those are the words which have been gifted to you, you should look into returning them." there you are, sebastian. the scholar has reimagined the unimaginative, 'you take that back.'

"if not, you could easily be removed from this establishment." or as sam says, given the old heave-ho. "surely you did not come into our tavern to hold court."

peeking out at her under her wrist: boyish and charmed, a little bit ridiculous, very much saved. her expressions on her face like a picture book. his mind going blank while he tries to read hers, just for the loveliness of it.

"well, i," he straightens up a little, now that the weight of courage is off him, "what was i gonna do? i couldn't just, you know, pick you up and haul you, that'd be horrible."

he offers her his hand, last second. palm to palm, no heavy coats obscuring.

"walk with me?"

"walk with you." she rephrases affirmatively.

sealing their hands together, diane presses herself against the solidity of trevor's shoulder, releases a tuneful sigh — to start them promenading forward — past the bright eyes of streetlamps, presiding over winding sidewalks; the background noise of traffic.

a mellowed merriment, "where shall we dine?"

"okay."

trevor pretend-gathers courage: deep breaths, shoulders high. shakes out his face, loosens up that smile. behind it, he is gathering real courage. three or four times he loses track of his focus—wants to just ask her to kiss him again.

"do you want to have dinner? with me? tonight. and i'll keep my misery entirely to myself. not that," he quickly intercepts himself before she can get a word in, "you make me miserable. you do the opposite. actually. so."

all the courage and for this?

he winces, squeezes one eye shut like she's a bullet headed straight for him.

"please?"

"you're lucky you didn't rattle your brain," diane forces a frown. it's an arduous task. sensitive to the sweetness of trevor's ramblings, this is not the direction her mouth desires to move in.

she pretends too.

making like she's feeling his forehead for fever, her furrowed brow now impersonates doctorish concentration. only partway into delivering his 'diagnosis' does she slip into sheer sincerity, "but i think you're okay."

more than okay.

"the answer is yes." she holds his gaze — but before long — mischievously toys, "i can't believe you thought you had to ask..."

i've rped diane for eight years and have dedicated myself to much rectification and canon intervention in all that time. among which is the cat i have given her in her adult life, whose name is professor whiskers,

instead he just tries to return her smile, tight-lipped, pink-necked, focusing on not being toppled over completely by the way she brushes her hands over his coat.

performative deep breath of concentration. each little pause in his sentence hangs like a question mark in the air between them,

"what if?—i took my friend diane?—for a bite to eat?"

"ah," the clouds have parted. she greets his smile with a gladdened kiss.

"i predict, that if you were to proposition, this, diane," she frolics past friend — friendship is paramount in romance, and their romance is new — but it will emotionally echo in deferred wonderings, "to dinner, she would doubtless believe your plans to have been wondrously improved upon."

she pats trevor's coat, nose likewise scrunching with playful adoration, "so, do. ask her."
