Stained glass window in St Mary’s Church, Banbury - Pictured here is HMS Terror stuck in the ice. The images was taken from the Arctic reports and notebook of Admiral Sir George Back during his Arctic expedition in 1836. It was commissioned by Henry Back, the admiral’s brother and vicar of the church in c. 1860.
i love translators’ notes. i love seeing a little footnote that’s like “compare my good and grass-touching translation to the STUPID translations of smith and johnson, who rendered the passage ‘xyz’ because their heads are so far up their ass they’re giving ouroboroses body dysmorphia” or “this sentence isn’t translated very well, but that’s because the author wasn’t making any FUCKING sense”
absolutely wild that [redacted event] is happening at [redacted location] today too. what even is this place

i know it's probably asking a lot, logistically, but at the same time, would it kill people to write a wee little program to convert special character code to the actual special character when creating OCR'd text. i know that they aren't included in the barest of plaintext, but it would be nice to not have to remember what unicode or whatever i'm looking at.
i also realize that i could download the html files and do it myself but. don wanna

trying to phrase "his death is super yuckily described" in professional terms. in case you're wondering, it involves stinking open sores infested with vermin.
one of the funnier examples of environmental storytelling is perhaps the "title no longer than 15 words" restriction on a lot of calls for papers in my field
