This was a bit of a mixed bag, honestly.

I liked how messy the main character was. She’s hurting from a bad breakup, her mental health is Not Good, she’s closed off and reserved and has no idea what she’s doing. But she tries, and I liked how complicated she was.

I was really interested in finding out who the killer was (I did have my suspicions) and seeing how it all played out, but I did find the pacing was very off. Nothing happens for so much of this book and the constant bickering between the girls became tiring. I enjoyed the mad rush of the end, though. I just wish the whole thing had been a bit faster paced.

Lost In Amber was so much fun! I loved that Yu and Lance butted heads almost immediately and that they were playfully teasing and poking at each other throughout the book. Their dynamic was so much fun to read and had me giggling more than once. I also loved that we also got more dinosaur rep! And the fact that Lance (a troodon shifter) was so tiny and yet super protective of Yu (a yutyrannus shifter) when he got hurt. It was both sweet and hilarious!

Another thing I really liked was that we got to see that Lance works for/with another group of dinosaur shifters, including Ruben from King & Queen. It was nice to see them working together, even if it was somewhat reluctant. Plus, seeing the enby microraptor, Xiang developing a massive crush on Ruben was so good (because Ruben has absolutely no chance of escaping them now 😂) and I hope we get to see how that pans out in a future book! This was just really fun to read and my only complaint would be that the epilogue was focused on Montana and Henry instead of Lance and Yu. Otherwise this was great and I can’t wait to read the next book. Lost In Amber is getting four out of five stars!

The first book in the Circle of Magic Quartet was a hard hitter. Tamora Pierce is a rare gem in fantasy and younger reader books, introducing you to strong and complex characters while also forming a story that’s hard to put down. A friend of mine recommended this one, since I mentioned liking the Alanna books, and it did not disappoint. I was happy with the pacing of the book and I loved the perspectives from each misfit, but also keeping them unique so it wasn’t writing the same story four times over.

This is a great book if you want to visit Tamora Pierce’s writing. I loved it!

JOMP August 2026 BPC: Day 5 Paperbacks

The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec is a compelling mythological retelling about the witch Angrboda, the wife of Loki and mother to three of his most distinctive children. Gornichec also draws from other witches with powerful prophecy abilities who are mentioned in the Eddas; her research and love for the myths is evident.

Perfect for fans of books like Circe and Kaikeyi that retell famous myths and legends from a fierce woman protagonist’s point-of-view, this tale had me hooked throughout. Angrboda is a powerful witch who just wants to be left alone but who falls for the Aesir’s resident troublemaker and is fated to face desperate injustices at the hands of Odin and his kin. I especially loved what Gornichec did with Skadi, the Huntress as a character and good friend of Angrboda. I couldn’t put this one down and was surprised how richly emotional the themes of motherhood, vengeance, and destiny hit me by the end of this great novel. Glad I finally got around to it.
