For the art tips, I was curious to know how you come up with compositions for your drawings or how you plan out on drawing hair when it comes to different styles and textures of it.
Or even telling us what type of research or studying goes into it?
With compositions, honestly I just fuck around on the canvas until it looks right. I physically move limbs with the cutout tool and push poses/make corrections to sizes before moving onto the next sketch. Honestly I usually go through about 2-3 sketches to make everything perfect. As for hair, hmmm. Well I primarily drew straight/wavy/curly hair for the majority of my life, seen here:
For these, I normally pick 2-4 colors. I first line out the hair and leave the space inside blank, so no line art other than the outline of the hair. Then I fill it in with a base color, isolate the layer so I can only paint on that, and go for it. Typically I put the medium color down first, then the darkest color to shade, and then highlights. Afterwards I add a layer on top of that to add the fray hairs.
Only recently did I start drawing protective styles/coiled hair. I realized pretty quick that I had no clue how to draw it in my style and make it look good, though. This was one of my earlier attempts with coily hair vs a recent attempt (sort of, just a tuft poking out)
Just learned how to adapt things to fit my art style. Primarily, tho, I've been drawing locs and have slowly been getting more and more comfortable with it, shown here in rough order:
Honestly with grid based hairstyles, it's helpful to look up hair guidelines online to see where things should be laying and to then recreate that grid onto the scalp. The last image is the first time that I have done that and I think it looks a lot more cohesive.
But there's also a lot of times where I have broken my own guidelines when it suits the piece.
