A Partner

I haven't added a post in a few days because my morale is indeed low, and wasn’t helped by my experience Orlando iX. I just finished film school and cant seem to get a job or develop this project. Don’t feel like im asking for much, but i must be, all I want is someone that shares my ambition for the project and self motivation. Someone I can feed off of and vice versa. I don’t have the skills of an independent game developer. I don’t model, or code. I write and direct, and i believe i’m damn good at it. So I clearly cant do this alone.

My iX

Orlando iX day one went well, I don't know if I'll go to the second day. I went to every panel I could and learned a bit more. I still got no further in finding someone to help develop this project, just a lot of wide eyed stares and few "yeah you should definitely start by building a small game in unity or gamemaker." No one laughed at me which is good, but it also could have been because I was actually in front of them and I'm a large "intimidating" black guy, or so I've been told. No one really sees past their nose though. I don't plan to create an mmorpg on my own, I don't plan to be a programmer. I know my strengths. I also know that there is no one way to do anything, but the rest of the world is ready to fight me on that. Everyone that I've spoken to seems to think linearly. "This is how I did it so this is how you must do it or you're setting yourself up for failure." I felt that same way in film school. But another way has to be possible, I'll make it so.

My Expectations or Orlando iX

I live within the south-eastern region of the States. I thought it was amazing that I heard a convention for technology and gaming will be happening for the first time in my own backyard. For many years I've wanted to enjoy PAX, E3, SXSW, CES and many others, but have never been able to because I either had school, work, or no money. In all honesty I don't really have enough money for Orlando iX but the portion dedicated for games development and gamers is only $35 instead of the full iX price of nearly $400 and damn, do I want to go to that startup summit. Hopefully it will be a solid experience being able to nodge shoulder with people that also think my idea is crazy stupid and maybe even finding a few that want to take this crazy stupid journey with me. Orlando iX 2015 is the first of its kind so I have no expectations. The only thing I hope is that I can talk to as many people as possible, and do as many things as possible, and by that I mean at least do a few things they have there instead of standing in line for one all-day. Especially because the first thing I'm doing is getting there before the doors open to signup for a meeting with Sean Kauppinen, founder and CEO of the International Digital Entertainment Agency, so he can longingly look me in the eyes and tell me that my concept of an mmorpg at the scope I'm speaking of is only the ideals of a childish inexperienced noob.

Not so level headed

After speaking with a friend of mine who knows much Moore about creating a game then I do, I got a little more insight on what I should and shouldn't do. He asentually said what the internet was trying to say but not so condescending. The difference is that he knows my strengths and was more capable of giving me a proper let down because of it. Which I of course still didn't pay attention to because I'm hard headed. But one thing did get to me. He told me, "starting this green is setting yourself up for failure. Building a team that's never worked together before on a project that's bigger than what AAA games can do is mad." I agree, its a small part of why I want to do this, defy all odds, innovate, and flourish (not to sound like a cocky little shit from silicon valley). I thought, while we build a team we can start small, with a mechanic or two and develop that into a game available for mobile devices and then another until we have two or three games under our belt. All including and building up to, The big one!

Go to the modders

My third attempt starts today. Instead of going to find people that are in the industry and think I’m an idiot I’ll go to the modding community, so they can think I’m an idiot. A major components of my game concept is bringing modding to a new level. I could see modders that build extensive explanations to game like Skyrim wanting to be part of a project like this.

Searching on Kickstarter

Trying something different today. I don't think my Reddit posts were the best idea. I could be because of how ridiculously big I want this game to be, it could be that Reddit is filled with a fist full of assholes. So today I thought I'd take a different approach, Kickstarter! I don't mean I'm asking people to crowdfund this project when I don't have a team, or full direction yet. I'm a dreamer not an idiot. I thought I'd look for failed Kickstarter projects and recruit the people that were part of those campaigns. Pretty messed up right? Regardless of what you think I pushed on. Here's my train of thought, people on forum classifieds are mostly looking for jobs. Even in the unpaid categories, people are mostly looking for something that's feasible for a small "indie" team. They want to just do a job in a few months and reap the benefits. They want to great games, a lot of them. But that's not who I'm looking for. I'm looking for people that know that a project like one that I'm trying to do is large and dunting, but have the drive to make something more than what's considered status quo. Kickstarter seemed to be the place for that. Where people tried to do more than what's "normal," "doable." If they've gotten to the point of asking the public for money then they must be incredibly passionate about a project that is beyond their financial means. That's what I wanted, people that are willing try something much bigger than them. Kickstarter was a bust. I got there all hopeful with a spark in my eye. Looking for people that had some semblance of a project actually direction just not the best execution. That's what I was expecting anyway. What I got was a hodgepodge of nonsense. I know now why people on Reddit gave me so much shit. The projects on Kickstarter that were poorly funded were either completely amazing full fledged projects or shit! I saw one campaign that said something like "I want to make an mmorpg so the money will help me learn to code and do art (" DO ART!!) and maybe get an extra person." They wanted $5000 for that. I could break down the many issues with that campaign but it's just easier to say No! After looking to what seemed like about 200 campaigns I've found maybe one or two campaigns I thought were worth the effort. I don't think I was looking for much just some kind of competence.

New step

So I'm working on getting a team together to try and start a video game and its not small. I've got big ambitions, so big that so far I've been laughed at and scorn by the internet. But that doesn't make me want to stop, I guess that only pushes me to want to do more.
