Rey & Kylo Ren “You’re afraid…. that you’ll never be as strong as Darth Vader”

Seeing this scene again and having the actual screenplay in hand, I noticed something.  When Kylo Ren gets lost connecting to the core of what Rey is rather than get straight to anything resembling a memory relating to the map like he is supposed to do and Rey becomes uncomfortable with this, telling him to get out of her head, Ren actually listens to her. He pulls back from where he was crouched beside her where his face is so close to hers that if she turned her head in his direction their lips might might meet and instead stands in front of her. At first I thought she had pushed him out of her head with the force but nothing in her face seems to indicate that. You don’t see her brow scrunching up in concentration or anything and the way Kylo withdraws doesn’t seem like he’s been forced out. I checked the screenplay hoping for some sort of clarification on what is going on at this moment. There was no mention of him coming up against any barrier in her mind to compel him to move away from her. In fact, surprisingly enough the stage directions indicate that Kylo at this point is supposed to do the exact opposite of what he does on screen. He is supposed to lean in closer to her.  

KYLO REN: And Han Solo.  You feel like he’s the father you never had.  He would’ve disappointed you.

His hand still on her face, her eyes fierce through the agony:

REY:  – Get out of my head -

But this just makes Kylo lean closer.  

The performance has been changed that it appears that Kylo is actually respecting her wishes to get out of that space in her head and her physical space as well rather than continue to violate it. You’d expect as the villain that he would not do this, that seeing her discomfort he’d use it as the means of torture by which he can compel her into giving up the map. Instead, he telegraphs to her his shift of focus away from her memories to the map, “I know you’ve seen the map. It’s in there… and now you’ll give it to me.” At this point, Rey is really tearing up like she’s feeling pain and actively trying to push him out. Kylo shakes his head ruefully as if to say,  "Please, don’t do that to yourself. You’ll only make it hurt more". In the novelization of the film, he even prefaces the interrogation that reading her mind like this brings him no pleasure. Here it is evident on his face. He then says that line we’ve all been analyzing to death, “Don’t be afraid. I feel it too” in like the most sympathetic, sorrowful and gentle voice. AntiReylos go on and on about how abusive this ship is and this scene in particular but during the filming this scene is actually changed to make Kylo less of a creep, someone who while interested perhaps desperately so in connecting with someone who may be a kindred spirit is still capable of respecting their wishes. In the film novelization, Snoke accuses Kylo Ren of having compassion for Rey. It’s definitely there.

Honestly, having gotten this chance to rewatch the scene again outside of theaters now, I don’t see the rape connotations of his “you know i could take whatever I want” line. Sure, the line itself COULD HAVE been delivered with a creeper, rapey vibe. But I don’t think it actually was. Its very matter-of-fact. Like “You know I can yank it out of your head painfully. Just cooperate.”

Also, the change from the screenplay is interesting. I remember noticing how he backed off when she told him to. Not completely of course, but he lets up when he really didn’t have to (as he has all the power here) and technically shouldn’t have, given what his purpose is and his role.

The script/book solidifies this by having Rey reply with “Well then you don’t need me to tell you anything.” In the film, they just had Adam twist his mouth ruefully before he says, “You know I can take whatever I want.”

He tried to give her an out. He didn’t want to mind probe her.
