Space opera book cover art by Dominika Waclawiak.
Opening a bottle of trimethylsilyl cyanide with the Millenium Falcon.
What is trimethylsilyl cyanide and what is this think used: Its a cyanide source in organic chemistry and it’s a quite poisonous stuff, since upon contact with water or any kind of acid it releases extremely toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN). However even through it’s a quite potent poison, it’s widely used in organic chemistry to prepare various nitriles.Â
Funfact: did you know that long ago (30-50 years ago) when they worked with cyanides in the lab they smoked a cigar to know that is it still safe to perform the reaction or something really bad is going on, since hydrogen cyanide is leaking somewhere from the reaction between the chemists hand. How did they identify the cyanide by smoking? The nicotine in the smoke and the hydrogen cyanide forms a salt, nicotine cyanide what is an extremely bitter compound and quite easy to recognize (DO NOT TRY IT OUT!), so the cyanide in the air could be detected far more faster than it would cause any serious poisoning.Â
Funfact2: some people can smell hydrogen cyanide and it’s characteristic almond like odor, however a lot people, including me does not smell anything. So make sure that someone is around when you are working with these compounds!
