In December 1992, another innocent victim, my mother, died in the final residence where I had placed her several months before. She died in her sleep, at peace. Shari and I drove up to Milwaukee to make arrangements for her funeral. Two days later, my mother was buried.  After the funeral, we drove up to see Jeff. We had called before leaving our house, and so he already knew of his grandmothers death when we arrived. Dahmer found the bathhouse to be a relaxing place, and sometimes a strange one. It attracted people with the most unusual fetishes, for the virtue of anonymity in an environment which accepts deviance is the freedom to express peculiar desires without fear of inviting shock. There was one man whom he encountered there who liked nothing better than to suck people’s feet. He apparently had no teeth: Dahmer lay back and enjoyed it. Weeks after entering Columbia Correctional Institute, Jeffrey was found with a razor blade in his cell. His prison psychiatrist believed he intended to kill himself and put him on Prozac, an antidepressant. Shortly after this incident, Lionel and his second wife, Shari, drove to the prison to check on Dahmer. On the way out, prison authorities gave Lionel and Shari a package containing all the mail Jeffrey had received while in the prison. As they drove home in the dark, Shari read the letters aloud by flashlight…
