Hey, do you remember back in 2020 a game called "Death Come True" came out? That live action, fmv game by Kodaka? Well a friend of mine streamed the whole game and I watched them play it. All endings seen in like 2 hours.
The story is all right. There's a really cool gameplay story twist that blew my mind but other than that...eh? It was decent. I love Kodaka's stories when they throw you into a middle of a weird situation with an amnesiac protag who has to slowly figure out what's going on. That feeling of confusion and lost as the protag tries to make sense of the world around them is so fun. DCT has a good hook but it's a very short game so you quickly learn what's going on and what the truth is. Maybe becuase I was only watching the game and not playing it but I was a little lost at the final confrontation, like the motives and stuff. I dunno, the ending was fine but I didn't feel super strong emotions for it, mainly cause the story moved by so fast it I didn't have time to settle in with the characters. Also it was hetslop so...yeah lol.
If I was someone who watched a ton of movies I would more to say about how the acting and cgi is but...I think it's all fine. There were some moments the cgi looked...goofy? Also there not being any blood was awkward. Some of the editing is a bit rough and it's very clear this game had to cut a lot of corners to fit in the tight budget. Some of the death endings in the late game felt kinda cheap compared to the death endings in the early parts.
But to end this post on something positive (if a bit embarrassing.) There is one thing from Death Come True I really really like.
One of the character, Nene Kurushima. She's a horror loving, crazy girl who loves serial killers and murder.
It's...It's live action Darumi.
I...Love her. And I'm mad that I love her. I'm so shallow that any character that fits this archetype will easily score points for me. AGH.
Nene is awesome tho. She's on the front cover yet she's only in one bad ending that's not plot relevant at all. You can miss her scene and beat the whole game. Why does she exist.
As the friend who streamed the game, I wanna throw my own two cents :D My main take is it's an alright game. Part of it is carried by the novelty of the concept (serial killer with amnesia in a time loop) and the fact that it's live action with pretty alright acting and really nice direction. The CGI was definitely wonky, but thankfully there wasn't anything there that demanded insane CGI work, with most of it being just adding details or composition work.
The biggest issue is just how short it is. With it being an hour and a half to two hours, excluding all extra content, it feels like it struggles to explore all of its themes after spending most of the game setting up the basics. I was able to predict 85% of the game once they revealed the information about the hotel itself. Don't feel bad about not understanding the motives, since they basically saved all the explanation of those until the end. The characters were fine, none really stuck out, but also none were that bad. The central romance was mid since I never got the vibe these two could be a couple. I think the themes are really cool, but there are so many other things (especially Kodaka works) that explore those in much more interesting ways. Overall, alright game. Probably won't be something I think of often, but it'll come around as "oh yeah that was a thing." Also lets me update my Kodaka game/anime ranking (World's End Club and Shuten Order, you two are next.)
