“Look out below-! Ah, hell, sorry about that.” Cayde calls, pausing his chase of a rogue… purple ball? to look down at the Hunter on the lower level of the courtyard. “That didn’t hit you, did it? I was gonna go huck it at Ikora but the second I touched it…whoosh, gone like I’d kicked it as hard as I could.” A dramatic flourish and a laugh punctuates his story, and he vaults over the railing to land on the lower level so he doesn’t have to crane his neck to look down anymore.

“You ever seen that thing around before? I have a few times, but until now I’ve never gave in to the impulse to go absolutely wild like a kid in a candystore.”

He looks up at the sudden call from above, seeing the face of a round silhouette falling in a trajectory aimed right for him. He catches the shiny purple ball and places it at his feet, making sure it doesn’t roll away by holding it in place with the tips of his digits.

“Yeah, these things are like… Extra bouncy for some reason.” He grabs the ball again and gently bounces it up and down in his hands, making sure that it didn’t go flying like it did before. “Why are you planning to chuck it at Ikora? Hoping to get her to play too?”

"Yeah, it's crazy isn't it? What I wanna know is where they come from and who's making them. But hey, it's a mystery for now." Cayde replies, placing his hands on his hips now that he's not busy chasing a purple ball. At least it didn't hit the fellow Hunter.

"Oh yeah, that's a thing I do sometimes. Did you know Ikora has crazy fast reflexes? It's a little scary, actually." He laughs, drumming his fingers against his belt just to keep his hands occupied. Cayde's not exactly one to sit still for long. "See, I started that as a game back when... well, when I first met Ikora. I'd toss something her way and be like hey, catch this! And she would! Most of the time, anyways. Other times she'd just dodge it. That was less fun, but still impressive."

“Shiro, Shiro you are not gonna believe this.” Cayde calls excitedly as he comes to stand at his protege’s side, laughing. His blue eyes are bright with amusement, giving hint that he’s up to something. As always.

“I found a rock that looks just like Shaxx’s helmet. I think it’d be hilarious if we drew a mustache on it, don’t you? Then we take pictures with it, get Sundance to let us into some of the screens back at the Tower, slap up the pictures of the Shaxx rock, and wait.”

He waits a beat, staring at the Hunter Vanguard. It’s not that he needs the time to process the information he’s just been given, it’s that he’s making sure he’s heard the part about the mustache correctly.

“Does it really have a horn?” Shiro asks, moving his head to get a better look. His face plating adopts a thoughtful expression. “What if we stuck a fake mustache on it? No, never mind, you’re right, drawing a mustache on would be better.”

The Vanguard Scout turns to face Cayde and holds up a forefinger. “You left out an important part of your plan,” he says. “Where are we going to hide?”

"Of course it has a horn! Look at me, would I lie to you? Do you think I'm a liar?" He laughs, giving Shiro a hefty pat on the back. "I'm kidding, we both know I lie sometimes. Just sometimes, though." He shrugs, then tugs on Shiro's cloak as he steps away. "Come on and look!"

"I haven't left out that part, just forgot to get to it." Same difference, but Cayde doesn't particularly care. "Why hide? Shaxx'll think it's funny, Id bet. Zavala might not, but Shaxx definitely will." He shrugs, sauntering off towards god knows where. "Hurry! This is gonna be gold."

“Hey, Ban, how mad do you think Zavala would be if I replaced all his coffee mugs with salad bowls? Like, the really big salad bowls. The ones old ladies use when theyve got grandchildren coming over for a holiday.”

These are, unfortunately, the very first words out of the Gunslinger’s mouth as he approaches Banshee’s stall, that usual swagger in his step. Sounds like Cayde’s up to no good again. “Okay, I know what you’re probably thinking. Cayde, didn’t you do that last week, but with shot glasses instead of salad bowls? Yes I did, but this is gonna be even better, trust me.”

“salad bowls, huh? hm…” banshee rumbles, leaning on the counter as he lifts a hand to thoughtfully rub his chin. a habit he’d picked up when he still had facial hair, centuries ago. after all this time, it’s still never left him. 

but he doesn’t know that. 

he’s trying to picture commander zavala drinking his morning coffee out of a salad bowl.

“don’t remember the shot glasses part.” he mutters, but then nods his head. “salad bowls sounds good. where you gonna get ‘em?”

Something about the action of Banshee rubbing his chin strikes Cayde as familiar, but Cayde writes it off as having seen Banshee do this many times before. Another one of the little things Cayde loves about the Gunsmith.

"Oh yeah, that's right. But still, I'm gonna get the bowls from the kitchen. He's supposed to be over on that balcony for at least another three hours, so I've got plenty of time." He comes to lean forwards, resting his elbows on the counter of Banshee's booth. "Wanna gimme a hand with it, big guy?"

Upon closer inspection, one would notice more little scribbles within the boundaries of the cave system’s walls. Just some Vex here and there to let you know, “here there be goblins.” Ace pretends Cayde seeing them doesn’t embarrass him.

“Thanks..” Ace smiles, a hand sliding under his hood to rest on the back of his neck as he slouches forward. “I wouldn’t mind you coming along when I go back. I was just thinking it’d be fun if we ran to Nessus together again.”

Cayde notices the scribbles, but says nothing of them, just takes note that it’s something Ace does. It reminds him of his earlier days as a Hunter when he would take any map he was given and mark down...well, anything. Made a friend there? Mark it. Watched someone do something stupid? Mark it. Did something stupid? Mark that shit!  He just really liked an excuse to doodle on things, though.

“No problem, Ace.” Cayde returns the smile, and carefully folds the map so he can give it back to his son. “It’d be way fun, I think. It’s been practically forever since I got out of this Tower, and Zavala can’t get mad at me for just having family time, yeah?” He chuckles softly “We go to Nessus, map out the rest of the cave system, shoot some Vex along the way, maybe make a stop at a public event or two...I’m looking forwards to it!”

Ace rolls his eyes as Cayde stifles a laugh, and he spreads a worn paper out on the table in front of him, a small corner of it singed by radiolaria. It’s a map of the cave system, hand-drawn, signed with a rushed spade. He smooths the wrinkles out with his gloved hands.

“I’m fine, just annoyed at myself. It could have gone better, but y'know, at least I got most of it mapped out. I’ll get back to it later.” He leans forward to rest his elbows on the table with a tired sigh. “I could really go for a nap or something.”

Cayde looks down at the map as Ace lays it down on the table, tearing open one of the little packets of fruit snacks and dumping it into his mouth while he surveys it. He seems to smile, reaching over to pull the map just a little closer to himself and get a closer look. Ace did a fantastic job. Cayde’s proud of him.

“I’ll go with you when you go back, it’ll be fun. If it wouldn’t be too embarrassing to run a mission with your old man, that is.” Cayde laughs a little, again. “But for now you probably should go take a nap, mapping is a lot of work. Lemme tell ya, this looks great, too. Even I couldn’t have done a better job.”

“You know that cave system on Nessus you sent me to for a patrol today? The one we didn’t have any maps for yet?” Ace-0 wanders into the room with something to say right off the bat, holstering his hand cannon to free his hands for brushing gravel and dirt off of himself.

“Well it led to a square hole-type room, and it was chock-full of Vex, so I tried sneaking around them to see what was through the next doorway.” He looks up at Cayde from across the table, the visor of his helmet drawing away to reveal the comically unamused look on his face, “And then I sneezed. I don’t.. I don’t even have a nose, y'know? It just came out of nowhere.” Ace pulls up a chair to have a seat. “If I did actual sneaky work like your nightstalkers do, I would die a lot.”

“Yeah, I know the one.” Cayde nods as he looks up and away from the cupboard of snacks he had been so carefully investigating. “Spill the details, kiddo. Find anything good? Treasure? Info?” These questions are rhetorical, of course, but Cayde asks them nevertheless.

Ace continues on to tell his story, and Cayde has to stop himself from laughing. He knows he should be more concerned, but Ace is home in one piece, and the scenario is pretty funny to picture. In fact, Cayde’s been in a similar situation many times. However, he doesn’t laugh, just quirks a metallic brow. He gets down a box of fruit snacks and closes the cupboard, coming to sit at the table. 

“Yeah, see, this is why I don’t send either of us on the missions that require stealth. Personally, I’ve always liked to cause a ruckus while I’m working.” He then allows himself to laugh, seeing as it’s at himself. “I could go on and on about how many times I totally blew a stealth mission, honestly. But uh...You okay, and all?”

Cayde gives a contented hum as Banshee pulls him closer, sighing softly. He’s quickly decided he enjoys being there at Banshee’s side, it feels right, it feels natural.

“Gotta figure out wh-?” Cayde blinks a few times, quirking a brow. “Banshee, do you not have an apartment here at the Tower? Or, did you forget? Have you been sleeping in your stall, bud?”

“…” Banshee doesn’t answer Cayde for a good minute. Did he forget? Did he have one after the brunt of the Red War passed? Did he ever have one at all? He can’t remember now. He simply shakes his head.

“Been, uh. Sleeping in the back.” he very reluctantly confirms Cayde’s suspicions, rubbing the back of his neck, “Have been for a while now.” This is embarrassing.

"Ban.." Cayde sighs again, shaking his head a little. He's not disappointed, or even upset, he just wishes he had found out sooner so he could do something about it.

"No wonder you've been tired. C'mon, let's go get you an apartment. There's an empty one next to mine, we can get you set up there, and I'll talk to Zavala about it later and I'll get the paperwork or whatever else taken care of."

Banshee gives that sound that’s just a puff of a laugh, one Cayde’s grown familiar with, and he feels a tinge of satisfaction that he could cheer Banshee enough to hear it. He lifts a hand to place it on Banshee’s back, patting gently.

“I think a nap sounds good. You tend to stay up pretty late when you’re working, and then you’re up early the next day, that sorta thing wears a guy down.” He pauses, not sure how to tell Banshee just what he thinks the chronic tiredness is, so he doesnt. Maybe another time. “Mind if I nap with you?”

Cayde pats Banshee’s back, and Banshee puts his arm around his shoulders to hold him closer. A heavy, loose motion, like a bear using his big, clumsy paw to draw a small and beloved companion in for half of a hug.

“Nah,” he gives his head a bit of a shake, “I wouldn’t mind. Need to figure out where to nap, though.” He lifts his head to look up and around, pondering this. He mutters under his breath, mostly to himself, “Where was I stayin’ again…”
