I want to see Yamato to smile kindly. Like not smirking or anything like that. I just want to see him smile genuinely.
I don’t know how anyone can play this game without realising Yamato is awkwardly (and so blatantly) in love with the protagonist.
“…That’s rough, buddy.” Despite the fact Hibiki just made a pop culture reference Yamato wouldn’t get, Hibiki honestly felt sorry for his friend. Since Yamato had been born JP’s had been the only thing in his life. He didn’t know anything else… Which was why Hibiki was so determent to show him everything.
“I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying this. If you already think it’s beautiful here you’re going to be amazed once we arrive a the East Garden. It’s not one of the most beloved tourist attraction for nothing. We’re almost there now.”
Indeed, only a moment later they arrived at the East Garden. Hibiki had had great expectations, but the beauty of the East Garden was even greater. Somehow, he found himself unable to say anything. He was just looking around silently, taking in all the breathtaking sights with Yamato by his side.
“They take good care of all the flora here…” Hibiki finally mumbled after what had felt like forever. “The garden has a traditional feeling to it, don’t you think? It’s beautiful, really beautiful. I lack better words to describe it.”
He was slightly confused at how nonchalant Hibiki responded in regards to what he had just said. ‘Buddy’? He chose not to look too much into that; it was probably some sort of common knowledge between civilians that he didn’t understand.
When they had finally arrived at the East Garden, he couldn’t deny that it was a beautiful place. While he never took the time to appreciate scenery like this before, now that he was doing so it it felt calming to him.
“It’s certainly a different way of spending my time than I’m used to...” He took a moment to look at the many different types of flowers. “Hm...” He took a keen interest in the irises. “These are from the family Iridaceae.” Of course he would view everything from a scientific point of view...maybe he should work on that. He wasn’t in his own home, after all. “I apologize...I’m still getting used to the aspect of doing leisurely activities.” He looked at Hibiki. “I never thought you would be the type of person to enjoy this sort of thing. I learn something new about you every time I spend time with you.”
Hibiki waved Yamato’s apology away. “No, it’s fine. Believe it or not, but you helped me out here, so thanks.”
As they made their way to the East Garden Hibiki already found himself enjoying the sights. Chiyoda sure was a beautiful place to be. As they strolled over the riverwalk leading to the Imperial Palace and walked under cherry blossom trees, Hibiki wondered if Yamato ever had been allowed to have a good look at his soundings like this.
“I bet you must have taken this road often by car to get to JP’s headquarters.” Hibiki broke the silence, pointing at the freeway at their left. “When did you become the director of JP’s? Oh, err… If you don’t mind me asking.”
It was hard to tell which kind of information Hibiki was and wasn’t allowed to know. Yamato trusted him, he knew that, but JP’s was supposed to be a secret organisation and Hibiki was no part of it. He didn’t want to get in trouble or end up having no other choice than to join JP’s because he knew too much!
“You come out here often? I’ve visited Chiyoda a few times before, but ever since meeting you I come here more and more often. I like it here. The center of our capital is beautiful, don’t you think?”
Yamato wasn’t too fond of reminiscing about his past, but it was a simple question that he had no reason not to answer. “I’ve been the director of JPs for a few years, but I was in training to be the next successor since I could read...which would be around four years old.” He didn’t mind the amount of studying he had to do, but now he wished he could have had a normal teenage life.
He looked at the scenery they passed, admiring the many cherry blossoms that had fallen from the trees and littered the sidewalk. “I’ve only ever come here for work-related purposes, never for a leisurely visit. I never stopped to enjoy the scenery...”
He smiled slightly, taking in the sights like a small child on a trip. He’s never once bothered to stop and look at the many buildings and how civilians lived before. He had to admit, it felt rather refreshing, and certainly much better than fending off demon attacks. “It is beautiful...I’m glad I could see it like this, and not as a simple passing by due to work.”
Having this conversation with Yamato was ironic to a point of being ridiculous. Hibiki’s ‘object of affection’, as Yamato had put it, had no idea of his feelings for him all right. Hibiki honestly had no idea if this was a matter to laugh or cry at, so instead of doing either of those things he smiled wryly.
However, as Yamato continued to talk the wry smile on Hibiki’s face softened into a genuine one. “You’re right. Io is a sweetheart so I’m sure she won’t come to dislike me even after I told her I can’t return her feelings… Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me on that. I feel like I could face Io now, should I have to.”
Today would go down in history as the day Yamato gave actual useful relationship advice… Who’d have thunk it? Although, perhaps this shouldn’t be all that surprising. People usually could find their answer by looking at the problem from a different perspective. Which was what Yamato had given him: a perspective solely based on logic.
“Look at you…” Hibiki said as he watched Yamato take his coat off. What Hibiki had wanted to add to that sentence was ‘…loosening up after giving your first relationship advice’, but he felt like the three words he had spoken already said plenty. Just, look at you.
He didn’t think that he of all people would manage to give useful advice in this type of situation, so it came as a relief to know that he had helped...although he didn’t let it show on his face. “...I apologize if you wanted more of a...sympathetic point of view. I can only answer by thinking it through logically, as you are already aware.”
Hopefully, he would never have to be put in this situation again. Something like love was too foreign to him...it definitely made him feel a little out of his comfort zone. He was almost certain that the only reason he tried to answer to the best of his ability was because of who was asking. Anyone else, and he wouldn’t have even given them a moment of his time.
“I’m well aware that I’m not the best source to talk about regarding such matters...but I hope that my answer to your problem has sufficed.” He didn’t notice the subtle emotions behind Hibiki’s words; he assumed that the words were coming from the surprise it must have been for Hibiki to hear someone like him to give relationship advice.

“…Thank you. That means a lot to me.”
That had been an incredibly sweet thing for Yamato to say. Hibiki was aware of how badly Yamato had wanted him to join JP’s after the Septentrione invasion had ended and their world had returned to its previous state. Although a normal life was not something Yamato could ever have, he was happy for Hibiki’s life had seemed to have returned back to normal.
Maybe one day Hibiki would do as Yamato desired and join JP’s. Hibiki wanted to be at his friend’s side and show him all the beauty their world had to offer. However, currently Hibiki felt like he wasn’t ready to leave his peaceful life behind just yet.
“I meant ‘not as I am now’ as in, I might already be having a crush on someone else.” Hibiki explained, winking at Yamato. Anyone else probably would have taken such an obvious hint, but Hibiki doubted Yamato would know what he was getting at. Not that it mattered much to him. Hibiki was happy as long as he was able to spend time with Yamato, no matter the kind of relationship they would be in.
“You’re right. Gotta blame dem hormones and chemicals. Can’t blame everything on those, though. Although I might not be in love with Io, she is still a very important friend to me. I’m going to have to turn her down, but I don’t want to hurt or upset her… Love is complicated, all right.”
Hibiki was kind of curious about how Yamato would react were he to confess to him. Not that Hibiki could imagine himself confessing to Yamato any time soon, or ever. Their friendship was so fresh, new and fragile. Hibiki was not prepared to put something that was so precious to him on the line.
“It’s sunny out today. I’m starting to feel kind of hot.” Hibiki mumbled more to himself than to Yamato. As they walked, Hibiki took his hoodie off and tied it around his waist by the sleeves. “How are you still alive wearing all those layers? You’ve got nullify fire equipped or something?”
“Think nothing of it.” If it made Hibiki happier, then he had no complaints.
“...And I’m assuming that neither your object of affection nor Nitta know of your feelings.” Of course Nitta wouldn’t know...otherwise she wouldn’t be trying to confess. Why would someone bother to still hold a crush on someone if said person loved someone else. He was unsure as to why Hibiki chose to wink at him, though. He supposed it was like a hidden message, which was what most people winked about, but to him it was unknown territory.
“There are...different forms of love. What you’re feeling towards Nitta, I’m assuming, is Phileo...meaning an affectionate platonic love that means a lot to you.” He looked ahead at the scenery they were about to pass by. “If she truly loves you, then I’m sure she would understand that you can’t return her same affections.” And if she didn’t, then she was more idiotic than he gave her credit for.
He couldn’t even imagine himself to be in Hibiki’s position, so he could only form hypotheses on the correct solution of dealing with such a problem. Honestly, if someone were to ever confess to him he probably wouldn’t know how to deal with it other than ignoring and walking away. Unless he actually cared about that person and their feelings, which was almost 100% unlikely.
He watched as Hibiki removed his jacket and tied it around his waist, before looking down at his own jacket. “I see no need to remove my jacket. I’m used to wearing heavy attire in warm weather, and this is no exception.” Unfortunately, he was never much of a joking person. “However...I supposed if you removed your own jacket, then I should do the same.” He didn’t mind carrying his coat, and he also took notice of a few people giving him weird looks as he wore it. Unlatching his arm from Hibiki’s for the moment, he unhitched his jacket and removed it, revealing his gray collared shirt underneath. Some skin was showing where the last button allowed the two sides of the shirt to part away, and he even loosened his tie a little.
“Hm...I will admit that this is more comfortable than walking around in the coat...albeit it...feels weird at first.” He almost never took off his coat unless he slept. Once he was done, he flung his jacket over his left shoulder, using his left hand to hold onto it by the collar.

“You would willingly concede to the Shining One…? I see you are not too far gone to behave recklessly just yet. That is a relief. I was afraid of your response, but it seems I’ve underestimated your good will.” Had Yamato responded otherwise – threats of blackmail and death for the Shining One and his dearest friends – Alcor’s hand would not have been stayed. The Septentrione would’ve unleashed his full wrath upon the Hotsuin in a single stroke of murderous intent. A snap of his finger was all he needed. Luckily, no blood was to be shed that day thanks to… Yamato’s uncommonly displayed decency, he supposed.
He smiled neutrally, mouth ambiguously curved in a way that prevented others from reading into his thoughts. “Perhaps there is hope for you, Yamato Hotsuin.”
“There is no need to fight to the death with him if I were to lose.” He crossed his arms. “While I won’t make it an easy fight by any means, if he were to somehow best me in battle then I see no point of attempting to fight him again...at least, not right away. But seeing as how we don’t have much time left, if I lose, then I will at least hear him out.” Unlike the other useless individuals he has worked with for the past few days, Hibiki was at least of sound mind and capable of keeping his emotions in check...not to mention his continuously growing potential.
“Tch...” He glared at Alcor. “The only hope I see is the faint light of humanity if they were to concede to the path I’ve chosen. It would be a shame for that light to fade away into oblivion.”
In a way it was precious how Yamato never seemed to be sure whether or not Hibiki was teasing him. Hibiki should probably stop making fun of Yamato all together to prevent any misunderstandings from happening in the future, but that wouldn’t help Yamato to loosen up around him any.
“Aww, why the grumpy face? And you don’t have to defend yourself or anything. I’m just messing with you. When I look like I’m up to something don’t take me too seriously, okay?”
This was just the way Hibiki was. He didn’t want to change himself and act differently around Yamato. That would be fair to neither of them. Yamato just had to realize that it was okay for him to tease Hibiki in return. Hibiki was sure that sooner or later Yamato would be comfortable enough around him to act that way.
“Yup, yup. Daichi and I like to go to the cinema. We don’t go too often, though. Those tickets are price for ordinary students like us, so that’s why we rather watch movies at my place on the plasma TV my parents bought recently.”
“As for Io, she’s a real sweetheart and one of the smartest people I know. I’m sure you would enjoy her company also.” As Hibiki spoke of his friend, his expression suddenly changed. When he opened his mouth again his voice sounded lower, almost as if he was trying to be serious for once. “I’m fairly certain she has a crush on me. I feel like she’s going to confess to me soon, but I’m going to have to turn her down. She’s amazing, honestly, but even so I won’t be able to return her feelings. Not as I am now, anyway.”
Hibiki realizes a little too late he has been rambling. Sheepishly he averts his gaze and lets go of Yamato’s arm. Yamato isn’t the first person that comes to mind when asking yourself who you should go to for relationship advice, which is why it is so odd Hibiki just did that. The only reason Hibiki can think of as to why he spoke his mind so freely around Yamato is because he felt comfortable enough to share his thoughts.
“…But yeah, that’s settled then. If we’ve got some time left let’s eat some takoyaki.”
If it were anyone else to quote ‘mess’ with him in that way, he probably would have gotten angry. But somehow in such a short time, Hibiki managed to worm his way into his life that was once guarded by walls. Rarely did Hibiki ever give him reason to dislike him...so this is what it is like to have a friend.
“I haven’t said this to any of the others, but for you I’ll make an exception.” He stated with a calm expression. “I’m glad to know that you and your family are doing well, and that your life seems to be going normally...considering what we have been through.” Hopefully something like that would never happen again...and if it did, he would do everything in his power to prevent it.
“...’Not as you are now?’” He wasn’t really sure what Hibiki meant by that. Love has always been a foreign concept to him; he’s read about it in books and has witnessed public displays of affection while traveling from one place to another, but like everything else that is considered normal for someone to go through, he’s never experienced it. “If you are turning her down the first time, then obviously you don’t feel the same way towards her as she does towards you. Of course, love is a foreign feeling to me so I wouldn’t know how to handle the situation if I were in your position.”
He thought about it for a moment. “When someone experiences love, your brain releases various amounts of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Dopamine is what is found in addictive drugs...whereas serotonin can cause temporary insanity and norepinephrine gives you a rush of adrenaline. Love is certainly a...strange emotion.” He was certainly relieved that he has never felt such a thing, and hopes that he would never do so anytime soon. Of course, like any emotion it was difficult for someone to control them. “If you feel nothing of the sort for Nitta, then your brain probably isn’t producing those chemicals.”
He had hoped he had helped a little, even if he wasn’t sure why Hibiki was sharing his thoughts on the situation to someone who wouldn’t be able to comprehend it in a personal manner. He could only think of it logically...not through experience.
“Hopefully we’ll have time after the original plan for today, then.”
If Hibiki hadn’t been in a great mood already, he sure would have been doing great now. It wasn’t often Yamato spoke of his true feelings regarding their relationship so openly, thus Hibiki truly took his words to heart.
“You’re smiling so that means you’re having fun already. You’re a natural~” Hibiki teased Yamato, a snigger following shortly afterwards. As they exited headquarters, Hibiki mentally prepared himself to be jabbed in his side.
“Nah, I usually go see a movie or play games with Daichi. As for Io I think she would enjoy it if I brought her with me to see the East Garden. She’s the kind of person who can honestly appreciate the beauty of nature. Usually she and I catch up while drinking a warm beverage in some cozy cafe, though.”
Despite what people might think, Hibiki wasn’t that much of a party animal. He enjoyed one-on-one and face-to-face conversations more than anything else. Where they were, who else would be there and what they would be doing didn’t matter as much to him. As long as he got to make his friend smile (or laugh even!), he was happy.
“That’s the spirit. If we’ve got some time left before you have to head back we could try and score some takoyaki somewhere also, but maybe I’m getting a little bit ahead of myself now.”
He felt like he was being made fun of, which sent a weird feeling down his spine. He knew he should be feeling insulted, but because it was Hibiki he was talking to, all he could do was give him an annoyed smirk. “I suppose...I just don’t get out of the building as much as I would like.”
“A movie...so you and Shijima venture to one of those public cinemas and watch?” He’s never been to a movie himself, but he’s passed by a few of them while traveling from place to place. Movies held no interest to him, so he never bothered to check them out. “You and Nitta are pretty close...” It was completely uncharacteristic of him to feel bouts of jealousy, but deep down, he wondered what his life could have been like if he had lived a normal live, going to a public school and meeting people his own age. Maybe then he wouldn’t feel so socially inept whenever people try and talk to him normally.
He smiled lightly. “I haven’t had the pleasure of eating takoyaki in a long while...not since you first introduced me to it.” Not even he could deny that he wouldn’t mind eating his newly found favorite snack...best do it now while he still had the free time.

Do you focus more on the past, the present, or the future?
“Focusing on the present is what gains the best results. There’s little merit in dwelling on the past, and what happens in the present can have an adverse effect on the future. In my eyes, by putting all my efforts on the present, I can in turn ensure that the future will remain a pleasant place to live when the time comes.”
“Everyone would be in high-spirits if they got to hang out with their friend, don’t you think?” Hibiki beamed, hooking his arm through Yamato’s and leading him outside. Only Hibiki got to touch Yamato so freely, a real privilege. However, Hibiki was always careful not to touch Yamato when he was in a sore mood. Neither of them would find that experience enjoyable, hence why Hibiki always put thought in when and how to have physical contact with his friend.
“With living it up I mean we should enjoy ourselves. You know, have a good time together. There are plenty of fun things we could do!”
The list of things Hibiki wanted to show and/or let Yamato experience still went on and on. There were just so many things to see and do. Hibiki wished that they could just go out and do all those things, but as the chief of JP’s Yamato never had a day off, let alone have time to go on a vacation. So until Yamato’s workload magically would be lessened all Hibiki could do was go on short breaks with the chief like this.
“I heard the East Garden near the Imperial Palace is beautiful this time of the year. That and it’s open to the public so if we go there we won’t have to pay a single yen.” Not that money was an issue for the Yamato Hotsuin, but Hibiki was just another poor student. “That and from here it’s only a thirty-five minute walk to there. If you just give me two hours of your time and I promise you you won’t regret it.”
He smiled a little. “I suppose you’re right. I’m still rather unaccustomed to what friendship is like, but I’m glad that you are the one teaching me.” He felt that Hibiki was the only one he could open up to in that way...how that happened, he hadn’t the faintest idea, but maybe something good came out of the Septentrione invasion after all; if it weren’t for that, he never would have met Hibiki.
He was caught off guard a little by his friend suddenly locking arms with his own. Physical contact of any sort was something that he was unaccustomed to, so it was definitely a strange feeling. Nonetheless, he just kept his hand in his jacket pocket and allowed Hibiki to do as he pleased.
“Fun is not exactly the type of extracurricular that I would choose to do.” The other male was always full of surprises, wasn’t he.
“Money is no issue to me, but the East Garden does seem rather enjoyable. Is this what you and your friends would do for ‘fun’?” He’s only ever been to the Imperial Palace once, and it was hardly for a leisurely event. It was, of course, to visit the Emperor of Japan and discuss issues regarding the best method of protecting Japan. The supernatural aspects were kept secret, of course, but it was still a business obligation. “So long as I’m with you, I’m sure that I won’t regret it at all.”
“I believe the Shining One is drawn to the concept of free will rather than a world still bound to Polaris and the Administrator System,” his swift response was curt and clipped, so very unlike his usual manner of speaking. Indeed, judging by his tone, Alcor was no longer in the mood to dance around their chosen topic. If subtle suggestions and warnings would not work, then he simply had to take the more straightforward path. “It is for that reason why I have chosen him as the new Shining One.”
Past mistakes were exactly that. Past. And Alcor was determined not to repeat any of them. “Mm. Then let me ask you this, Yamato Hotsuin. What do you plan to do if the Shining One does not choose you?”
“Like I said before, I have the power to persuade him to join me. Of course, in the end it is up to him to decide whether or not take me up on my offer.” So that was the reason Hibiki Kuze was chose as the new Shining One? Perhaps he was right after all; Hibiki was indeed a special individual, filled to the brim with untapped potential. To have the potential under his wing...would truly allow his meritocracy to come to fruition.
He had already given this much thought. Hibiki was not the type to be easily swayed, but considering the bond they had built, he had hoped that that would at least mean something. Then again, maybe building a bond with someone was only special to Yamato...after all, before he met Hibiki, he had never considered things like bonds to be important. “I will of course, fight back. If he does not choose me, then I will have to bring him back to his senses.” His expression softened a little, going from anger to a melancholic dissatisfaction. “If he defeats me in the end, then I shall stand down. What happens after that depends solely on him.”
