Layla had been humming tunelessly to herself as she flitted about the kitchen. She was going to go out later, so everyone was on their own for dinner. But the courier was going to eat something before she left.
"Just a little longer," she murmured. "We’ll be out of here soon."
She shifted the bundle she’d been holding in one arm to the other as she moved to stir the soup she was reheating. The grip had been a little loose, and she dropped the spoon to brace the little miracle to herself better.
"I’m sorry, baby, I’ll be more careful."
Boone came home to find the suite mostly empty, which seemed to happen more often than not lately. He did hear someone clattering around in the kitchen, though.
He peeked through the doorway to find Layla stirring a pot on the stove with one hand. In the other arm, she cradled that little surprise she’d come home with a few days ago.
As he watched, she nearly dropped it. His eyes widened behind his sunglasses before she narrowly caught it.
"Hey, be careful with that," he said a little harshly, but that could have ended badly. "Do you have to carry that around everywhere?"
The courier let out a startled yelp at the sudden voice. She spun, clutching the bundle in her arms to her chest.
"How dare you speak about our son like that."
The sniper rolled his eyes. She'd been acting this way ever since he came home a few days ago to find it sitting on the kitchen table, wrapped up in a blanket, and her cooing softly to it.
"You're gonna have to get rid of that thing sooner or later," he said. "Or at least keep it somewhere else."
