50 things I learned from 2 years of sobriety
In celebration of my anniversary, I wanted to write out some of the things I’ve learned over the past two years.
At first, you don’t know how to live your life without alcohol, and it seems impossible. One day without it seems like a crazy idea.
The first day sober feels like a giant victory, and you can’t remember the last time you woke up without a hangover.
You don’t know what to do with yourself when you have an urge to drink. I would constantly have a water bottle with me to sip out of instead.
Your sense of taste and smell greatly increases.
You notice every alcohol bottle, beer can, wine glass, liquor store, open drink, stocked fridge, new brewery, and spirits menu.
Your emotions are all over the place because alcohol was your stress-reliever.
You may not yet consider yourself an alcoholic, but just simply “taking a break.”
Not everyone will understand why you stopped drinking, and they may judge you for it.
The first 30 days feels like an eternity.
You might be scared to go to AA meetings.
You might go to meetings and hide in the back, hoping no one will notice you.
You might leave the meetings ASAP so you can avoid talking with anyone.
You constantly battle the idea of whether you’re an alcoholic or not.
You read self-help books and gain insight that lasts about 10 minutes.
You go to therapy and minimize your problems.
In therapy you also realize that you’re having to start your life over. You have to change people, places, and things to keep you sober.
Your family will be your biggest fans in your sobriety. Look to them when you feel afraid.
Parties will be very difficult if alcohol is around. It’s okay to walk out if you have to.
Some AA meetings will be very inspiring, others will be boring, but none of them are a waste of time.
Waiting to get a sponsor will only make staying sober 10x harder. They are your best ally, confidant, and support system.
After a few months of feeling sober, you realize how “foggy” your brain really was when you first began. Clarity sets in.
Meeting with a psychiatrist is nothing to be afraid of. Taking medication can help your brain function better while you’re rebuilding a healthy mind.
You will want SO MUCH SUGAR. If you didn’t have a sweet tooth before, you definitely will.
You might over-indulge in caffeine, exercise, shopping, and other activities.
Praying is always a good idea.
People may tell you how you should feel, but you’re allowed to feel the things you do.
Some people may not understand why it is difficult for you to quit drinking, when it’s “no big deal” for them. They probably don’t have an addiction.
The hardest thing is to deal with life on life’s terms. Learning how to cope with uncomfortable or painful situations without alcohol is the biggest hurdle.
Your friends, or people you thought were your friends, will change when you stop drinking. True friends, the ones that you should cherish, will not abandon you. They will love you and support you in becoming a healthy person again.
If you’re like me, you may have quit alcohol to lose weight. Later on you realized it was a real problem that you had, even if you were functioning.
There are many functioning alcoholics in the world. This means they still go to work & pay the bills, but are still excessively drinking.
You don’t have to hit rock bottom to want your life to be better.
If you have anxiety or depression, it will likely get worse when you stop self-medicating.
You will start to evaluate all your relationships and ask yourself if they are healthy and supportive.
You may feel like an outcast if you’re publicly shamed for not drinking.
You’ll realize that people who judge you for not drinking usually have some sort of problem they are avoiding themselves.
The more AA meetings you go to, the more you start to feel like a Veteran. It’s no longer scary and you feel safer than ever in those rooms.
You will start to care more about your appearance and take better care of yourself.
You will find things to keep you occupied, like coloring, crafting, music, the internet, to help ease your restlessness.
People will start to ask you for advice about quitting drinking. You might find out that the last person you thought would come to you, will.
You start to enjoy the simple things in life again; sunshine, walking the dogs, photography, spending time with family, etc.
You wonder if people who are constantly talking about alcohol are as sick as you were.
Your sleep will improve immensely.
You are more productive and may want to work towards future goals.
The smell of alcohol on someone’s breath will become repulsive.
You will have bad days that you fight to stay sober. Sometimes it’s taking it minute by minute.
You will realize how much you missed out on while you were drinking. It might make you sad, but you now have the opportunity to enjoy every moment in a day.
You will want to help other people who are suffering, but sometimes you have to walk away from a cancerous situation.
If you ever have a craving, or are thinking about taking a drink, remember why you started this sober journey in the first place.
The problem for us was not alcohol. Alcohol was our solution. Eventually that solution stopped working and lead us to insanity. From insanity, we had to rebuild and relearn how to cope with life.
amazing
remember that divination comes from the Divine.
you are not just handling tools as if the tarot was simply a bunch of cards, or as if a pendulum was merely a random trinket that you swing around on a string.
remember that good divination is not just mastering a method and knowing how to proceed. divination is so much more than that. divination is reaching out to the other side, working with true divine forces. it’s collaboration of you and the Universe, it’s communication with each other.
if divination is anything, then it is having faith that there is someone on the other side who will answer the call. all you gotta do is believe so.
Simple ways to protect yourself! 💫🌙
When doing things anywhere from tarot readings to large rituals it is important to protect yourself. Here’s some easy ways to protect yourself and your space/home.

2. Carry charged and cleansed crystals with you such as clear quartz or black obsidian
3. If you’re a Wiccan wearing pentacle jewlery can provide protection
4. Bless your home or yourself with sage/incense
5. Make consumable moon water and drink throughout the day
6. Carry salt and rosemary charm bags in your pocket or handbag, you can even hang these in the corner of your home for protection
7. Draw/carve sigils on of protection on every day things such as foods, tables, cars, handbags etc.
8. Meditate and raise your vibrations
9. Invision yourself surrounded and protected in a bubble of white light or whatever color you feel drawn to

Getting Stuff Done: How to Deal With Lack of Motivation
“How can I stay disciplined?”
“How can I get things done if I don’t feel like doing them?”
“How can I overcome my lack of motivation?”
As a college student who has had their fair share of being absolutely unmotivated to do anything, I know it can be hard to get things done if you don’t feel like doing them. Luckily, there are some things you can do to become more motivated to finish your homework, write your paper, study for your exam, or whatever tasks you have on your plate.
Part 1: Increasing motivation
Break up your tasks
Just thinking about one huge task is going to intimidate you so much that you’d rather leave it till later, when the urgency of time pushes you to complete it, than start now.
Breaking up your big tasks into smaller ones will make your tasks seem less daunting. Since you won’t be as intimidated by the amount of effort it might take to complete these tasks, you’ll be more likely to start doing them.
For studying, this can be something like ‘make flashcards for units 1-3’ or ‘practice past exam papers: 2015 + 2016’. For writing papers, this could be writing an outline, doing research for each point of your outline, writing the first 3 paragraphs, etc.
Working on small tasks at a time will also make you less prone to distractions since you only need to focus for a short length of time.
Make small goals and reward yourself
These goals could be accomplishing one of the smaller subtasks above, or achieving a certain grade on a practice test, or finishing a section of your study plan - as long as you’re working towards something.
The rewards? Maybe going out to eat, watching something, or even just time off. Hopefully these rewards will motivate you to complete your task.
I know some people are more inclined to do their work if they’re punished for not doing it, rather than rewarded for doing it, so if you wanna take the ‘punishment’ approach, you could do something like not allowing yourself to use social media until you finish a set of tasks - this is essentially the same thing, just thought about in a different manner. However, you should always be careful with these punishments/restrictions, because sometimes they can end up harming your health and productivity (e.g. ‘I can’t take a break until I finish all of my homework’).
Part 2: Not relying on motivation
Of course, you can’t always expect yourself to be motivated all the time. In fact, it’s very ineffective to rely on motivation to get things done; motivation is fleeting. Here’s an alternative: self-discipline. But how does it work?
Establish a study routine
Humans are creatures of habit. Even if you’re a P-type (like me), habits are hard to break. So making a habit of accomplishing your tasks/studying at a set time every day will help you, well, accomplish them. For example, it’s a lot easier to get your homework done every day if you do it at the same time - e.g. once you come home from school - rather than doing it ‘whenever you have time’.
Having a study routine will also make you less likely to be distracted since you know that that period of time had a purpose. If you’re trying this out for the first time, you might wanna completely get rid of distractions so that you can focus (e.g. putting your phone in your bag, on silent). However, with practice, I found that my phone or any other sources of distraction don’t really bother me anymore since I’ve had tons of practice resisting the urge to pick up my phone whenever there’s a notification, for example.
Schedule in time for breaks
This ties in well with the point about rewards: the break might be the reward for your studying. However, this doesn’t always have to be the case. You shouldn’t always think of relaxing as merely a reward for studying or accomplishing your tasks, but rather a necessity for the well-being of your mind. This sort of approach to breaks ensures that you actually let your brain rest once in a while.
After taking a break, your mind will be refreshed and revitalized, and you should have more than enough energy to continue with your other tasks.
Some of you asked - with regards to my previous post on The Mandatory Midday Break - how I can limit myself to exactly an hour, and to be honest, the answer is habit. It’s like having a habit of showering at the same time every day and not extend the length of time you spend in the bathroom (except in certain circumstances, like during a day off, I guess).
This is why it’s important to schedule your breaks and establish a study routine or habit - not only does it ensure you get enough rest, but it also prevents you from extending your break so that you don’t become unproductive and leave a ton of tasks unfinished.
It can be hard to motivate yourself to accomplish all your tasks, but there are things you can do to increase your motivation. However, you can’t expect to be motivated all the time, and you shouldn’t rely on motivation to get things done. Discipline and habit are the most important tools you can use to be efficient and productive without having to be motivated.
Hope this post has been helpful, and, as always, feel free to drop me an ask if you have an ask. Have an awesome week :)
