That feeling was shared by Archie and made him briefly hold off replying. In truth, he wanted to hug Maxie despite everything and himself. Slightly disappointed his rival wanted to rush though.

“Can’t even spare a night with me?”

He tried laughing that off but looked saddened. So this was how things were now still. He felt like a annoyance. Maybe he had made one of himself. Unfortunate he could not think of any other way to get Maxie’s attention on him.

“I…gotta admit something.”

“I am here, aren’t I?” Maxie replied sharply, followed by a sigh. He supposed he could try to drop the attitude, try to not act as uptight. 

He massaged his temples when Archie spoke and quickly looked up at the other, his action coming to a halt.

“Admit something?” The Magma Leader couldn’t deny he was intrigued. “ Well, then. What is it?”

Occasionally Archie wanted to see Maxie. Have times like in the past. Sharing ideas that they had, working off each other yet together still. Believing in the best of humanity.

Maybe too optimistic back then. But even now, he was curious if any of the Maxie he knew was still there. Nervousness was hardly something Archie experienced but he paced around outside the building for the aqua run tv station. 

The sun had set and the building closed. Archie simply waiting to see if Maxie would come per the invitation to talk he gave.

Maxie hadn’t reacted especially much at the invitation, apart from his usual sneer at his old comrade's foolishness. Neither did he think meeting as Leader’s of opposing teams was smart, nor did he consider himself much of a man that would dwell on the past, instead focusing on the future, not wasting time on being sentimental. Archie, on the other hand...

With a sigh, Maxie told his admins that he had something he needed to do, and the two of them, not daring to defy him, didn’t question Maxie as he left the Magma base as dawn began approaching.

Soon, he reached the tv station and saw a familiar dot of white and blue grow bigger and closer. He couldn’t deny that he felt a tugging sensation in his chest as he approached Archie.

“Archie. You’ve called me here. What do you want?”

Concise and to the point. Let’s get this over with.

Maxie was absolutely right.They were trying to go out and do good for the world, and here they were being thwarted by a child who did not even know what Team Magma’s cause was! The insolence!

Courtney could hardly believe it herself. What kind of child beat their highly trained grunts? She was ready to see the kid for herself in Slateport. There had to have been something going on for the grunts to have lost the first time. She gave her leader a nod. “Tabitha and I will have a team of grunts there immediately. When should we expect your arrival, Leader Maxie?”

“Actually.” The Magma Leader rose from his seat, walking up to Courtney with hands tucked neatly behind him. “I will go there, too. I will not have some pesky runt ruin Team Magma’s plans. We head out. Now.” And with that, he walked past the Admin, expecting her to follow. It was time to deal with the child, once and for all.

Maxie stepped forward, hands neatly held behind him, back straight as he looked around. Eyes wandering in sharp and cold observation.

“So this is the great Aether paradise I have heard of.”

Half a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. Amusement, perhaps, or an attempt at politeness.

Hands slowly balling into fists as she entered her leader’s office, Courtney repeated herself: “I have a report on the mission…”  Why didn’t she have some kind of file with her? Just so she wouldn’t have to look into those stern eyes.  There was no doubt how much she adored Maxie, but his cold demeanor would terrify her sometimes. It was a testament to how much respect he commanded as leader.  Another breath, and her anger subsided for the time being.   She was an admin for a reason. She had already proven her competence.  It was the grunts’ fault.  “We failed the mission. When the grunts reported back… they told me that a child… a child… had taken the Devon Goods from them,” she spoke as evenly and clearly as she could, and then brightened her tone ever so slightly, “There is a chance to… fix it. The child plans to take the goods to Slateport.” That was another piece of information given to her by grunt Zinnia. She had ways of sneaking around, and as luck would have it, she discovered that the child would be in the right place at the right time for another one of their missions. But this time they would not fail. 

Maxie lift his head, the sharpness that came over his features was immediate upon hearing of the failure. His eyes burned, the side of his mouth pulled into a sneer, making his nose wrinkle slightly. “You are telling me...” Maxie spoke slowly. An attempt to come to terms with their current situation, or to suppress anger, maybe?  “Team Magma lost to a mere child?” Maxie sighed, a hand went for his temple and he massaged it, shaking his head.. The incompetence. “Slateport.” He repeated after Courtney. A short moment of contemplative silence. “Thanks for reporting this. Now, I suggest you take yourself and your grunts to Slateport and, as you put it, “fix” this. Losing again to a child is out of the question!”

Courtney did not want to be the one to report this to her leader.  Grunt Zinnia had already mentioned the child, but now Courtney was forced to tell Maxie what the brat had done. 

She was fuming. Ready to blow her top as if she was Mt. Chimney herself. 

Granted, she had already taken her frustration out on the grunts responsible for the mishap, but they could not afford any setbacks.  With a timid knock on Maxie’s office door (a complete contrast to her internal rage) she spoke:  “Leader Maxie, I have a… report… a report on the Devon Goods mission.”

“Enter.” Came the response of Maxie’s cold voice from inside the office. Once Courtney entered, the red clad man sat at his desk, working as diligently as ever. Maxie took only a short moment to look away from the paper work on his desk to look up at the admin. “Courtney.” He said sternly. “To what do I own this pleasure?” The words were spoken without much emotion, and mostly said for Maxie’s own amusement. He found the sarcasm he often times displayed as .. funny. Often to the misfortune of others. It probably upset some, but Maxie didn’t care. An eyebrow was slowly raised as he awaited her response, signing his curiosity.

Maxie called out to the other. Sounding a serious as he could in a situation such as this, making sure not to scream the words. As if Archie’s immature behavior was going to get to him. No. It would not.
