my personal grievance is that helaena’s levity downplays the death of Jaehaerys. book Helaena refused to leave her rooms, to eat. now show Helaena is talking about wanting to raise chickens. in the same episode Rhaenyra’s maternal grief lives so deeply. Rhaenyra has so many horrific compelling motivators with these spectacular emotional scenes I just wish the Jaehaerys’ death and subsequent grief over him held a comparable weight for the Greens.

Not to belabour the point but I think my main gripe with the direction they have taken with HOTD is that the writers have a very clear agenda that they're trying to push and interesting stories never emerge from zealot-like preaching.

When you watch a show made by conservatives for conservatives it is never rich or interesting because their characters are just 2D impressions of people designed to hammer home a specific point they're trying to make without prioritising the audience's experience. Characters that should be filled with nuance are reduced to cardboard cut-outs just walking around and parroting the writer's own politics.

Because C*ndal and H*ss decided to approach HOTD with the agenda of 'Rhaenyra is perfect and look how misogyny ruined everything' they have completely stripped the show of its nuance and have even done a disservice to the very character they are trying to prop up.

Did they not trust their audience enough to see how misogyny affected Rhaenyra's claim without making every character who opposed it a 'baddie'? Ironically, in doing so they have accidentally made characters who oppose her more interesting because at least they have layers to them rather than a 'Rhaenyra can do no wrong' mindset.

Without considering the time period they're writing in and the logic of why people might have opposed Rhaenyra for a reason other than 'I just hate all women', they have jackhammered the plot into something that no longer resembles an actual story but now just a long, preachy narrative that we all have to sit through with the only brief glimpses of enjoyment being the things actually taken from GRRM's original story.

I could have tolerated things like them ignoring world-building details (example being that guy thinking Alys was a Maester despite the fact that women can't be maesters and she never said she was one so why would he have jumped to that conclusion) and changing plot details like writing out Nettles (forgivable if they're trying to preserve the daemyra agenda but writing in favour of blood purity and Targaryen exceptionalism is certainly a choice) but I could never tolerate just a badly delivered tale. You have the source material right there in front of you so you have failed the most unfailable task in history of just adapting it faithfully to screen. Fans loved AKOTSK and that's because it was faithful to the book. Did we manage to not understand the injustices of the world's class system because Dunk didn't weep onscreen and monologue about how unfair everyone was being to him 24/7? Did he pull out some quote from Richard the Lionheart before he stepped into the trial to compare himself to some great historical figure because the writers didn't trust that we would GET that he's in a predicament without it?

The directorial decision being made to snatch the audience's hand and drag them towards the 'right' conclusion is just bad writing. I would have been ten toes down for selfish, spoiled and arrogant Rhaenyra who spent her days partying and believing the throne was hers because 'daddy said so'. What a great character that would have been! But I will never root for this modernised, insipid, ridiculous person who doesn't seem to understand the very environment she was raised in (because the writers don't) and that goes for Alicent too or whoever the fuck Olivia Cooke is supposed to be playing because it certainly isn't the Alicent we started with.

And Jesus Christ, I'm only on episode 2. FUCK.

I came for Daemon and Alicent but I am absolutely sat for Jace and Helaena. I never knew how good the knight x princess trope was but I am so eating it up. Thanks for the update, I can’t wait for the next chapter but am also so nervous for it.
