Picking up where I left off…
We arrived at our hotel and Matt said to me that his parents had driven up to meet us to share a drink and celebrate our engagement. So we raced up to the room to drop off our stuff.
*Side note: as children, my sisters and I always used to fight over who was allowed to use the room key to open the hotel door whenever we stayed in a hotel. I still love doing this and jumped at the opportunity to do so this night.
This means all I was thinking about was using the room key to open the door and didn’t notice the ROSE PETALS sprinkled out in front of our room until I opened the door and realized that our ENTIRE room had been decorated by Matt’s parents and friends for our engagement!! It was a total surprise, there were pictures of us and a cake and champagne and gifts and I was so shocked that I just stood in the room and tears began to form in my eyes. Matt came up behind me and wrapped me up in a huge hug. I then remembered that his parents were waiting for us downstairs so we dropped our stuff and headed to the pool deck where we were greeted by a small gathering of not just his parents but friends too! We celebrated with champagne and toasts and stories and Matt got to be surprised for once; his mom had invited his best friend to come and celebrate with us because they hadn’t seen each other in months. He was so happy and it was wonderful to be able to celebrate with everyone. We were up until roughly two in the morning that night and slept in all morning the next day.
It was a trip that I will never forget and I am so happy that Matt chose to propose at Disney because it’s one of my favorite places, it’s somewhere we can go back to and reminisce, and it’s somewhere that we can take our kids in the future to show them where it all began! I love being engaged to Matt and I’m so happy that I will get to call him my husband. He makes me so unimaginably happy and I love that I can be myself around him. He accepts me for who I am and I know that he will always support me. I am so lucky to have such a caring, loving, kind, genuine, honest, trustworthy, and funny man in my life and I can’t wait to become his wife!
Engaged (Part Two!) Picking up where I left off... We arrived at our hotel and Matt said to me that his parents had driven up to meet us to share a drink and celebrate our engagement.
Wow, it’s been awhile, hasn’t it!? The end of my undergrad career was hectic, summer was wonderfully relaxing yet busy, and the beginning of my grad career has been insane to put it lightly. I haven’t had time to do much in terms of enjoyment, but I have some wonderfully exciting news that I just have to post about!
I’m engaged!! During winter break, Matt took me to Disney World for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and I was beyond excited. I spent my fall semester writing two papers on Disney topics and couldn’t wait to experience all that I had learned in my research. So we were off! Tuesday morning we hit the road and drove to our favorite hotel, the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress. We were lucky enough to get a room on the top floor with a view of the Disney parks meaning we could see the fireworks shows at Epcot, MGM, and the Magic Kingdom, from our balcony each night. After spending some time taking in the gorgeous view, we started getting ready for the park. Naturally, Matt was ready in about five minutes, I took a little longer to get ready. Finally, we left for the park and, of course, got lost on our way there. It was a mixture of signage not being very accurate and the Maps app taking us in the wrong direction. We ended up at the Animal Kingdom but, fortunately, we were able to turn around and make it to the Magic Kingdom. We hopped on the tram that took us to the monorail and I was at this point, bouncing off the walls excited beyond belief. Matt had to “calm me down” because I was getting a little crazy. I kept telling him how I wanted to buy a pair of Mickey ears and get a button commemorating our Christmas visit, and how excited I was to see the castle lit up in its splendor. We got on the monorail and were whisked into the heart of the park, just as it started getting dark outside, setting the mood for the castle lighting ceremony featuring the wonderful Frozen characters.
This is not an exaggeration, I definitely teared up when I saw the castle come to life with its frosted look to celebrate the season. Matt laughed and grabbed my hand, pulling me towards the castle so we could get a better look. We began walking like salmon swimming upstream, towards the castle and I kept pestering Matt to get a professional picture of us in front of the castle. Finally, he agreed and we posed for our picture together and then panicked because I thought I had lost our tickets when really they were buried in the bottom of my purse. Anyways, we finally got close enough to the castle where we could enjoy a moment together.
Matt began telling me how much he loves me and how happy I make him and how he couldn’t wait to be by my side forever. He continued, saying that he imagines taking our kids to Disney someday and how he wants to spend the rest of his life with me. I leaned my head on his chest because I was so happy to be there with him. That’s when I knew he was about to propose. His heart was POUNDING out of his chest and I knew that was the moment! Stupidly, I had my phone in my hand the whole time and kept thinking “I can’t be proposed to with my cell phone in my hand!” and furiously began tucking it into my pocket. Then Matt grabbed my arms, took a step back and got down on one knee, holding out a box that LIT UP a perfectly gorgeous ring. Of course, it doesn’t take much to impress me and I couldn’t believe that Matt had specially ordered a box that lit up so that I would be able to see the sparkling ring inside. So naturally, my first reaction to him down on one knee was “OHMYGOD IT LIGHTS UP!?” And then, I saw what the light was really shining on, this gorgeous round, solitaire diamond engagement ring. I started furiously nodding my head and saying “yes, yes, of course, I’ll marry you!” and then pulled Matt up off the ground for the longest kiss which made everything seem to stop for a second. Then I realized that I didn’t have the ring on yet so we pulled apart and Matt slid the ring onto my finger effortlessly, it was a perfect fit! Then he spun me around to a camera which I vaguely remember flashing in the background the whole time and asked if I recognized the photographer. Shocked, excited and stunned, really, I said no and then it hit me that Matt had invited his friend Denise, a professional photographer, to capture the entire moment for us.
Matt, always FULL of surprises, told me that the ring wasn’t everything and that he had a couple more gifts to give me. I couldn’t imagine anything else that he might have and then he handed me two items: the first, a set of Mickey ears that say ‘Just Engaged’ on the front and back; the second, matching buttons with a picture of my favorite Disney princess, Ariel, that say ‘Just Engaged!’ for he and I to wear for the rest of the night. The two things that I said I wanted on the tram ride earlier, he had already taken care of, my thoughtful, incredibly sweet man. Words cannot describe how amazing I felt that night and how incredibly happy I am to be engaged to the man of my dreams, the love of my life. We took so many pictures that night and ended up leaving the park early because we were exhausted after being so excited and happy. We rode one ride, my favorite, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Adventure, and then we watched the fireworks (during which the happiness of our engagement came over me and I started crying) before deciding to return to our hotel to celebrate together.
Little did I know that Matt had another surprise planned… stay tuned!!
