BOSS 2017!

Welcome back BOSS! This past weekend we had the pleasure of joining our fellow aca-gentlemen and women on the Tufts campus for some incredible workshops, performances, and an overall sense of community. As always, we learned a ton, and we got to meet some really cool people doing some really awesome things!

Long time, no blog - we missed you! Our 2017 New Year’s resolution is to connect with you all more - so here goes!

We are honored to have been selected for Voices Only Forte VI! This is the sixth edition of the a cappella compilation album and it includes 20 of the most amazing tracks the professional, semi-professional and amateur a cappella ranks have to offer this year.

We are thrilled to share the recording stage with these fine groups, and hope that this inclusion is a sign of great things to come for Redline this year!

Redline Auditions 2016!

Additional Audition Deets:

The audition will involve a brief “interview”, followed by some range testing, some sight-reading, some sing-backs, and a solo of your choice. You will also have the opportunity to ask us whatever questions you might have about the group, and just see what we’re all about.

For the solo, you will need to prepare a portion (usually a verse and chorus will do the trick) of a song that showcases your voice. Redline sings all type of music, but your audition song should be something contemporary (more Bruno Mars, less Bach). What’s most important is that you show us what you can do!

Those who (we think) are the best fits for Redline right now will be invited to join us for a group callback on either Tuesday, September 6th or Tuesday, September 13th. If you can’t make it on either of these days, let us know - we’ll try to figure something out.

Redline Bio of the Week - Jonathan Sheffi

Jonathan Sheffi

Hometown: Boston!

Non Musical Career Path: Cofounder, biomedical IT startup

Vocal Part: Bass

What music do you listen to in your free time?

Eagles of Death Metal, Muse, LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, The Bravery.

What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid?

Astronaut or standup comedian.

What movie character best describes you?

They’re TV characters, but I’d say a combination of Dan Rydell and Jeremy Goodwin from the old Aaron Sorkin show Sports Night.

If you could meet anyone, who would it be?

I wish I could have gotten to know my father’s father better. He died when I was really young but he had an amazing life story.

What is the best vacation you’ve ever been on?

My father and I go to Europe each fall to watch soccer together, and I look forward to those trips every year.

If you could have any superpower what would you want?

Teleportation. I'd love to not have to deal with airports or commuting.

Favorite food?

Really good barbecue.

Favorite rainy day activity?

Word or logic puzzles. Plus hot cocoa.

What is something that people don’t usually know about you?

I can wiggle my ears.

What music do you listen to in your free time?

All kinds, especially classics like Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, to Billy Joel.! Currently I’ve been listening to Fitz and the Tantrums, The Decemberists, and Young the Giant.

What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid?

A baseball play by play announcer.

What movie character best describes you?

Hmm...I’m going to cheat and give a TV show character. Phil Dunfee from Modern Family because he doesn’t take himself too seriously but is also a very genuine person.

If you could meet anyone, who would it be?

Jackie Robinson

What is the best vacation you’ve ever been on?

My best vacation was this past summer. I went to California with my girlfriend for two weeks. The best part about it was driving down Route 1 and taking in the incredible views of Big Sur. That place should be on everyone’s bucket list.

If you could have any superpower what would you want?

The force.

Either a great cheeseburger or THIS

Catching up on a TV series or reading.

I once got trapped in my high school courtyard when getting a math textbook one evening. I was stuck there for hours!

What music do you listen to in your free time?

I’m all over the place! I LOVE to blast the stereo in my car and iTunes Match gets me through the work day. I oscillate between classical (Saint-Saens, Ravel, Mendelssohn), EDM ( <3 Above & Beyond), and some solid standbys like Duncan Sheik, Jamiroquai, Sade, and Jason Mraz.

What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid?

Probably something generic a boy would say, like a doctor or firefighter, ‘cause you know, those are totally the same.

What movie character best describes you?

I’m not a movie person, so my reference base is very limited, but I’ll go with a Minion b/c I take pleasure in the simple things in life. Plus, they’re funny and I like to laugh!!!

If you could meet anyone, who would it be?

You said “anyone,” so my answer is Ella Fitzgerald in concert. I started to write “to hear her sing live,” but let’s not get technical… :)

What is the best vacation you’ve ever been on?

In high school, I went to France for 3 weeks with a Salem-based choir to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion (WWII) at Normandy Beach. We sang at various towns in the area and the event culminated with a performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with 8 choirs from around the world. I also acquired an affinity for chocolate mousse and Guinness on the trip.

“Stop buying stuff before your bday!!!”

If you could have any superpower what would you want?

FOOD!

Favorite rainy day activity?

I go stir-crazy if I’m stuck inside, so productive things like play piano, organize, and make lists of items I need to get so I have a reason to go outside. You know, like you really really need that replacement light bulb. Unless it’s rainy AND windy; that’s when I open a bottle of wine and send an invite for friends to join.

What is something that people don’t usually know about you?

I’m an Eagle Scout (so is KG!). I also like to name inanimate objects, like my car (Björn) or a bottle opener (Giuseppe), and will name inanimate objects of yours whether or not you asked (hey Rhiyonce and Bianca!).

Multiple things: basketball player, astronaut, James Bond and/or Indiana Jones, trumpet/singer musician

Kevin G. from Mean Girls…’cause I’m a mathlete, so nerd is inferred, but forget what you heard. I’m like James Bond the Third…

If you could meet anyone, who would it be?

Michael Jackson

What is the best vacation you’ve ever been on?

May 2012, after 22 years of living in the United States, my family and I took a 5 day trip to San Salvador, El Salvador, the beautiful Central American country where my sisters and I were born.

I always looked forward to trips up north in Michigan.

Welcome to the Redline Class of 2014!

Over the past few months, the gentlemen of Redline have had a lot of life events - and in a few cases members have had to say goodbye to our brotherhood for bigger (or in some cases smaller...babies!) things. Andrew Stone ("Stone", Tenor, '11-'14) and Matthew Boucher ("Boosh", Bass/Bari, '11-'14) have both become rock stars at their day-jobs and we cannot in good intentions keep them from 9-5 stardom. John Kalish ("JK", Tenor, '07-'14) has moved to the middle of the country in order to raise his new baby girl Annabelle near family - we are souped to have another baby Redliner in the world and wish JK and the family all the best! Our sincere thanks to all three of them for sharing their voices and their dedication to making Redline awesome.

With some spots open in the group, we held auditions last month to recruit some new talent. We heard an amazing group of singers and want to thank everyone who came out to auditions - Boston truly has some exceptional talent!

Redline Plays Cooperstown, NY

Sometimes, it all begins and ends with a cappella.

In the fall of 2008, Redline member Andrew "Kenyon" was sitting in on auditions for his college a cappella group when in walked freshman Lilly Tillapaugh. Kenyon can still remember that moment. Over the course of that year, the two become close friends enjoying a passion for music together and sharing a bond that only two best friends can understand. Unfortunately, at the end of the school year life would take the two separate ways and it wasn't until Redline was asked to perform at Bentley during the fall of 2011 that the two would reconnect...through a cappella.

So began a whirlwind courtship, where Kenyon and Lilly fell in love. It was only fitting that the couples path would lead them to center stage, where the a cappella fates had one final act awaiting...

Sleep Release!

Never get sleep, never get sleep! A song with lyrics true to everyone at some point in their lives, “Sleep” is Redline’s newest recording, and now you can download it FREE on our website here.

“Sleep” is the foot-stomping single off of Allen Stone’s self-titled album released in 2012. The gritty, hip, and all-around groovy tune describes a singer’s struggle with sleepless nights while touring on the road. Redline has made it our own, with Kevin Guest arranging an extremely soulful version of the track that includes a rhythmic breakdown and an upbeat feel throughout. The track was mixed and mastered by Carl Taylor at Liquid 5th Productions (www.liquid5th.com). We are very excited to add this energetic and kick-ass song to our rep!

Gigs on Gigs on Gigs

We could not be more pumped about the start to our 2014 event schedule. Already, we have performed at two awesome venues each with a really electric crowd cheering us on.

CRLS A Cappella Jam:

To kick off the new year we had the honor of headlining CRLS's yearly A Capella Jam session. With over 10 high school groups in attendance, there was a ton of really cool music filling the Cambridge walls. Performing a 5 song set to the delight of a packed house, the CRLS Jam reminded us of why we do what we do. Thank you for all who attended, we hope to see you again next year!

Faneuil Hall Expo:

Combining a kick-ass venue with a crowd who was swooning for sing-a-longs, this gig rocked. We performed on and off for OVER 2 HOURS, but we honestly could not get enough. We want to thank everyone from across the country who talked with us throughout the night, it was a pleasure meeting everyone!

All His Bass Are Belong To Us

At the end of 2013, we yet again had to say a teary goodbye to two fantastic members of our unit. Taylor Ferguson (Bass) is saving the world one project at a time, and received a much deserved promotion at his day job with City Year. Brad Range (Tenor) moved to Texas with his wife and new son (who totally will be Redline Class of 2035). Our biggest thanks to the both of them - you are missed!

Fortunately, the openings gave birth to our newest member, Jonathan Sheffi.

Jonathan Sheffi - Bass

To see Sheffi on paper is intense. An aggressively solution-oriented genomics professional with over ten years of professional and advanced academic experience, the guy knows his stuff. But put a microphone in front of him and Sheffi falls into the Redline groove without missing a beat.

We are souped to have Sheffi as an addition to our bass section!
