Do you know if Punchdrunk has or has had any involvement in the development of the bar characters? Or are they purely creations of the performers who play them?
My understanding is that the performers are the primary creator of their characters. Much of Punchdrunk’s work is created through a workshop process with the performers. For instance, Hecate’s 1:1s were written in large part by Careena Melia, the original Hecate. There is a rehearsal director who works with the bar characters, so I would imagine they have input and veto power on the bar characters.
A caveat – I don’t work for Punchdrunk and I don’t have inside information into all the details of how the McKittrick Hotel works. That said, I have spoken to several people, including folks on the UK side, about the creative process the company uses.
I’m fairly sure nobody created Evelyn Grey - she emerged from the sea, radiant and perfect, in a giant clam shell, and when it cracked open, she grinned and licked her fingers and announced, “That was delicious, I’ll have another.”
A wonderful familiar face on a Wednesday morning
I think my ask may have been eaten. I was wondering what it up with the dance the Taxidermist does on the 5th floor? He doesn’t seem to have any connection to the 5th floor like the Nurse, the Matron, or Lady Macbeth have. I ran into him as he was doing the dance and left him when he was done so I didn’t see the scene before or after which might provide context.
I don’t have a strong opinion on this, other than it seems to be connected to the goat and he can’t get through the gate, which has interesting implications for themes of separation and isolation. Thoughts from anyone else?
Other fun Taxi/5th floor connection things to think about (or not because you get to think what you want, plus spoilers blah blah disclaimer):
- Taxidermy on 5 and how it relates to the other taxidermy in the Hotel/what taxidermy is used for in the context of this world
- Where James the lift operator (who is also Taxi) stops the lift first, and how many people he releases there
- Taxi’s connection to Lady Macduff and, in turn, her connection to the 5th floor (the files on 5 make great reading...)
- Back in the day (though I haven’t seen this for many years,) there was some paperwork in Taxi’s back office desk that would indicate Bargarran himself was once a guest at the King James...

Sleep No More Call to Arms:
Megan was a fixture at the Sleep No More box office for many years. She was always extremely kind, helpful, and friendly. Megan is as much ingrained in my early memories of the show as any of the performers. I vividly remember being greeted by a flash of red hair and a mischievous smile every time Megan was on duty.
It seems the Universe dealt Megan a terrible hand this summer, and she needs our help. Please consider chipping in. Every little bit helps. New contracts new hope for genderbent roles?
I answered an ask about current cast gender bends a while ago (I can’t link it right now because Im on mobile but if I remember later I will) but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, GENDERBEND SPEAKS! MORE IMPORTANTLY GENDERBEND SPEAKS AND MAKE IT RYAN!!!
If they’re doing a gender-bent cast, there can be but one choice for Speakeasy and that is Megh Dixon.
Megh’s Speakeasy would be amazing and I am also 2000% here for Megh’s Taxidermist.
Time to raise our glasses to the incomparable Nick Atkinson. It’s impossible walk into Manderely and not break into a smile when Maximilian is there. For so many years, Nick has been so incredibly welcoming, kind, and generous of spirit. Thank you for all the sweet songs and blue jokes, stiff drinks and enchanting conversation. We love you more than all the bubbles in champagne. Cheers to new adventures, and we’ll see ya when we’re lookin’ at ya!

Can you talk more about Caroline and the Reverends track? Like not the 1:1s, but the stuff that was out in the open so us newer fans can get a better idea of the role they played?
I wish I could remember more details!! Perhaps those who have better memories than I do could comment? Basically, the Reverend was aware of all the mysterious happenings in Gallow Green, and he was investigating the incidents. (I think at one point he was supposed to be a police officer or a detective?) He had a lot of artifacts and clues gathered together in his igloo/sauna space as well as a soundtrack of his audio notes and other recordings. (I really wish I had a copy of that track!) He would send audience members out to the various parts of the story with notes and directions on where to go.
Caroline was Malcolm’s secretary, and she was tied into the search for Grace and Hecate’s plans for Gallow Green. She moved around High Street and tried to stay out of sight, for the most part. Speakeasy would mess with her.
I miss them both.
Spoiler Alert for Caroline stuff, I guess. If you don’t want to know what stuff she did out in the open, don’t read this any more. Spoiler spoiler spoiler. Okay, I think I met my spoiler warning obligation.
(I can’t remember the order she did any of these things in, because I only saw her a handful of times, but:)
When Caroline was in the show, there was a file in Malcolm’s office regarding Grace and her disappearance. She spent a lot of time looking through it. Sometimes she carried it around with her, but other times, she left it in a drawer, and it was marvelous to take out and read when she was elsewhere. After Caroline was no longer in the show, I’ve checked to see if the file is still around, and I’ve never found it again.
She had a scene in Paisley Sweets with Fulton, when he goes to put the flowers back after Agnes rejects him. She spoke to him, quite a bit, but I was never able to clearly hear what she said.
She had a scene in the drawing room of Agnes/Grace’s apartment. There were symbols and documents hidden behind some of the paintings on the wall, which she would take out/flip over and show you. (Please note, these are not there any more. Don’t go flipping over all the paintings in the drawing room. It’s disruptive at this point.)
She had a scene with Hecate, just before the rave, when Old Black Magic plays in the rep bar. Hecate would come out and do a burlesque-type performance on the rep bar stage, and Caroline stood and watched her. (Hecate did not disrobe at all - mostly gloves and fans.) Hecate kissed her forehead before sending her away.
There is (has always been) a letter on her desk in Malcolm’s office, tendering her resignation. Before and since she was in the show, the letter just sits, pre-written, on the desk. When she was in the show, you actually saw her write the letter out, leave it for Malcolm, and then pack up and leave.
She also spent an inordinate amount of time filing her nails.

No way to pick one! Max, Evelyn, Aiobhinn, Violet, Kit, Elizabeth, Calloway, Julian... Favorite one on one?
Porter. Also Banquo.
Favorite scene?
I can’t turn down a good rave. Or a good Boy Witch cabaret. Or a good phone booth dance, or Lost Luggage solo, or bird solo...

Guests who hold hands, decide they want to go separate directions, and then have a debate/tug of war about what to do rather than separating. Worst audience behavior you’ve seen?
I saw someone scooping rave blood out of the chalice with their fingers and eating it. That was pretty gross. First moment in the show?
I was let out of the elevator on the third floor. I went into the Macduff nursery and was feeling quite unnerved. I wandered into the graveyard and felt even more unnerved. Then Lady Macduff (played by the luminous Lily Ockwell) came stumbling down the hall, flipping over the mirrors and screaming at her own reflection, and we were off to the races.

My favorite Matron is/was Megh Dixon. She was masterful at being both comforting and frightening at the same time. (Pandora, if you’re reading this - please don’t be worried about any current Matrons being frightening. Megh played this part differently than most people, and I enjoy being a little bit scared in the Hotel!)
How I Feel This Week
What were the dinners from before parties started happening like?
I think perhaps I wasn’t clear. When I said the dinners before the parties, I meant the dinners that took place on the night of the parties, before the parties started. For many of the major McKittrick parties, you could purchase tickets in the following combinations: Party Only; SNM and Party; Dinner and Party; or Dinner, SNM, and Party. I usually had a ticket for the Dinner and the Party. (I don’t like to see the show on party nights, as it’s usually really chaotic. And you are then tired for the party.)
As for what the dinners were like–they usually tied into the theme of the party in some way, and often had performances that related as well. Almost all of the them happened in the Heath.
My favorite was either Mayfair 2014 or the dinner before The Guilty Party (the one based on Clue,) and I wrote a post about those ages go. I’ll try and link to the posts if I have a chance later tonight. You could also look through the tag for people’s reactions to the dinners. If you see a mention of the “Paisley Players” that’s probably a reference to a dinner.
Way back in the day, they used to have dinner events in the Heath before it was called the Heath. They were called “Secret Dinners” and they took place before an SNM performance. Similar to the pre-party dinners, they served multiple courses of food, with performances in between. No Paisley Players - the dinner itself was in honor of a mysterious, and tardy, guest of honor and the performances centered around the happenings to do with this guest. Our hosts were the incomparable Violet (Elizabeth Romansky) and the dazzling (and still red-headed) Ruby (Zhauna Franks in her pre-Hecate days). Greg Dubin (who you may know as The Great Dubini, a magician who has performed at many SNM and Follies events) was the guest of honor. There was another nameless main character, who we called Creepy Waiter because he was, well, a Creepy Waiter. To this day I don’t know who played him. Maybe he will forever be a mystery.
What do you think got Lady Macduff killed? The brutal act of Macbeth? Catherine's poisonous milk? Couple shots she took at the party? The ignorance of Malcolm when she ran to him for help? Or her secretive relationship with Macbeth?
Here is my take (your mileage may vary):
Lady Macduff is drugged, but perhaps not poisoned. I’ve always suspected she is being given some variation of laudanum or another opiate derivative. This was a pretty common historical medical practice, especially when someone wanted a woman to be out of the way or not paying attention to something. She’s certainly quite woozy during parts of the story. And it doesn’t help that Malcolm doesn’t help her (although he is understandably distracted.)
But the reason she dies? It’s because Macbeth beats her to death.
And I do not think Macbeth and Lady Macduff have a secret relationship. Where is that interpretation coming from? It’s not one I’ve heard before, nor is it one I’ve seen in the show or in the original text. I’m always open to new interpretations, but this one is so far from the commonly accepted version that I’m going to need some pretty strong evidence.

Matron didn’t start with any surname. The top program is from pre-2013 (not sure exactly when it was printed). She’s just The Matron. The black covered program was purchased May 2013 (not sure when it was first printed in this edition). Matron has now become Matron Long. With an O. The silver covered program was purchased in 2016 (again, unknown when it was first printed this way). It continued to show Matron Long. I feel the need to post this both as a service to @rottenwoodandwiltedsunflowers because any Matron misinformation cannot stand, and because source material is a beautiful thing.
