Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones in Marvel’s The Defenders.
It had been simple really, dismissing the bartenders and turning over the sign in the window two hours before either action became necessary. Choosing a bottle to waste by herself had been even easier. She just needed a few hours alone to navigate the unfamiliar territory that was true, unbridled grief. At the sound of Tequila Mockingbird’s front door opening, one palm clasped around her glass tightened almost imperceptibly as she pivoted on a bar stool. “In case you missed the fucking sign, we’re closed.”
Lucas stepped into the bar, intent on staying in the hole he had crawled into--metaphorically at least. And when he was feeling sorry for himself, familiarity was the most double edged sword he could use. The words that were snapped back at him almost made him smile. At the very least, he knew he wouldn’t be told to ‘snap out of it’ here. “Totally missed it,” Lucas said, “and the doors not locked,” he pointed out, his voice rough.
“Opera is right there in the title, though.”
“---because it’s about an opera. A lot of it’s a satire of the art form. Doesn’t make it opera. BUt if you want to redeem yourself with 'music of the night', go right ahead.”
It had been a while since she had even seen Lucas let alone heard from him. She figured she had no reason to worry, but with the chaos of the last few weeks she decided getting out of the apartment to see a friend would be a good thing. Granted, Lucas didn’t look entirely up to visitors. “"Is this a bad time? I can just come back later or something.”
Consoling himself that he was in a town of alcoholics didn’t exactly help his throbbing headache. Yet another thing Lucas chalked up to life’s inequalities. The pounding in his head didn’t exactly stop when he tried to will it away, forcing him to accept that someone was at the door. Letting out a sigh, he tugged it with his magic, half wondering if maybe getting arrested would make it better. “Pretty sure later will be equally bad,” Lucas mused with a quirk of his lips as he pushed himself to his feet, “beauty of being a crippled witch. How’s things on the undead side?”
“It is. Thank you,” she said taking the book from him, folding the corner of the page so she wouldn’t lose her spot. “Again, I’m terribly sorry for that. I’m Abigail by the way. My friends call me Abbey.”
“It happens to the best of us,” Lucas replied, “I’m Lucas, it’s nice to meet you Abigail.”
Abigail couldn’t tell if he was upset or not about it but she nodded either way, “it is so far. It’s a collection of short stories based off fairy tales that are based off the Brother’s Grimm.”
“Sounds interesting,” Lucas said, carefully sticking his finger in between the pages, “here, I managed to save your place,” he told her, holding the book out to her, “so, not a total loss.”
“I just don’t think I can do it justice. I might be able to do Phantom of the Opera. Maybe. Probably not.”
“That--does not count as opera.”
“I’m okay with laundry, I like the folding. It’s calming. For housekeeping, my room has to be pristine, but the rest of the loft is fifty fifty. It’s mostly for dishes, I just hate the dish water. It’s gross. It’s like sticking your hands in a dirty bog or something.”
“Sorry, I’m a little hung up on the fact that you like folding laundry. You know there are dishwashers right?”
“You are too kind, Mister. I believe it still needs some more practice to get it perfect, but I’m getting there. - It’s a shame most of my neighbours do not appreciate me playing. Therefor there are very few moments like these were I can actually play. - Do you happen to just pass by, or do you live here?”
“Most artists are underappreciated in their lifetimes, or maybe your neighbors just don’t have very good taste,” Lucas said, “just passing by,” he answered, “I live a few streets away.”

“So if we ever meet the person who developed Skip the Dishes, remind me to put them in my will in the event of my death. Having restaurants that never delivered before suddenly deliver to me is amazing. Also you know, the aptly named lack of dishes.”
“What are your thoughts on laundry? General housekeeping? Or is this hatred reserved only for dishes?”
“Are you seriously requesting that?”
“What? Are you not a fan of opera?”
Abigail was hardly paying attention as she walked down the street, nose buried deep in her book. Which was probably why she didn’t notice until it was too late and she collided with the person in front of her. "Oh! My apologies! I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
His hand came out to steady the person who collided with him. Lucas enjoyed what technology offered, but if he had a penny for every time someone collided with him due to having their eyes on their phone, he’d be even richer. The feeling of the book was far more respectable. “I hope it’s a good book,” he said.
